Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy 1 DRA And it came to pass, when Jesus went into the house of one of the chief of the Pharisees, on the sabbath day, to eat bread, that they watched him. BSB BSB: One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the home of a leading Pharisee, and those in attendance were watching Him closely.
DRA And behold, there was a certain man before him that had the dropsy. BSB BSB: Right there before Him was a man with dropsy.
DRA And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? BSB BSB: So Jesus asked the experts in the law and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”
DRA But they held their peace. But he taking him, healed him, and sent him away. BSB BSB: But they remained silent. Then Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him on his way.
DRA And answering them, he said: Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out, on the sabbath day? BSB BSB: And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out?”
DRA And they could not answer him to these things. BSB BSB: And they were unable to answer these questions.
The Parable of the Guests 7 DRA And he spoke a parable also to them that were invited, marking how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them: BSB BSB: When Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, He told them a parable:
DRA When thou art invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place, lest perhaps one more honourable than thou be invited by him: BSB BSB: “When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not sit in the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited.
DRA And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place: and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. BSB BSB: Then the host who invited both of you will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ And in humiliation, you will have to take the last place.
DRA But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee, cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee. BSB BSB: But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your host will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in front of everyone at the table with you.
DRA Because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted. BSB BSB: For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
DRA And he said to him also that had invited him: When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy neighbours who are rich; lest perhaps they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made to thee. BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return, and you will be repaid.
DRA But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind; BSB BSB: But when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind,
DRA And thou shalt be blessed, because they have not wherewith to make thee recompense: for recompense shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just. BSB BSB: and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
The Parable of the Banquet (Matthew 22:1–14)
DRA When one of them that sat at table with him, had heard these things, he said to him: Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. BSB BSB: When one of those reclining with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is everyone who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
DRA But he said to him: A certain man made a great supper, and invited many. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “A certain man prepared a great banquet and invited many guests.
DRA And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to say to them that were invited, that they should come, for now all things are ready. BSB BSB: When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
DRA And they began all at once to make excuse. The first said to him: I have bought a farm, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee, hold me excused. BSB BSB: But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first one said, ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go see it. Please excuse me.’
DRA And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them: I pray thee, hold me excused. BSB BSB: Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. Please excuse me.’
DRA And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. BSB BSB: Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, so I cannot come.’
DRA And the servant returning, told these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the feeble, and the blind, and the lame. BSB BSB: The servant returned and reported all this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’
DRA And the servant said: Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. BSB BSB: ‘Sir,’ the servant replied, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’
DRA And the Lord said to the servant: Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. BSB BSB: So the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.
DRA But I say unto you, that none of those men that were invited, shall taste of my supper. BSB BSB: For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will taste my banquet.’”
The Cost of Discipleship (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; John 6:59–66)
DRA And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. BSB BSB: And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.
DRA For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it: BSB BSB: Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?
DRA Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him, BSB BSB: Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
DRA Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish. BSB BSB: saying, ‘This man could not finish what he started to build.’
DRA Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him? BSB BSB: Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
DRA Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace. BSB BSB: And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.
DRA So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple. BSB BSB: In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.
Good Salt (Matthew 5:13–16; Mark 9:49–50)
DRA Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? BSB BSB: Salt is good, but if the salt loses its savor, with what will it be seasoned?
DRA It is neither profitable for the land nor for the dunghill, but shall be cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. BSB BSB: It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile, and it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
