Women Minister to Jesus 3 DRA And Joanna the wife of Chusa, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who ministered unto him of their substance. BSB BSB: Joanna the wife of Herod’s household manager Chuza, Susanna, and many others. These women were ministering to them out of their own means.
The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1–23; Mark 4:1–20)
DRA And when a very great multitude was gathered together, and hastened out of the cities unto him, he spoke by a similitude. BSB BSB: While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, He told them this parable:
DRA The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. BSB BSB: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it.
DRA And other some fell upon a rock: and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. BSB BSB: Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture.
DRA And other some fell among thorns, and the thorns growing up with it, choked it. BSB BSB: Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the seedlings.
DRA And other some fell upon good ground; and being sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. BSB BSB: Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up and produced a crop—a hundredfold.” As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
DRA And his disciples asked him what this parable might be. BSB BSB: Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.
DRA To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see, and hearing may not understand. BSB BSB: He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’
DRA Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. BSB BSB: Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.
DRA And they by the way side are they that hear; then the devil cometh, and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved. BSB BSB: The seeds along the path are those who hear, but the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
DRA Now they upon the rock, are they who when they hear, receive the word with joy: and these have no roots; for they believe for a while, and in time of temptation, they fall away. BSB BSB: The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root. They believe for a season, but in the time of testing, they fall away.
DRA And that which fell among thorns, are they who have heard, and going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and yield no fruit. BSB BSB: The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not mature.
DRA But that on the good ground, are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit in patience. BSB BSB: But the seeds on good soil are those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, cling to it, and by persevering produce a crop.
The Lesson of the Lamp (Mark 4:21–25)
DRA Now no man lighting a candle covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it upon a candlestick, that they who come in may see the light. BSB BSB: No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.
DRA For there is not any thing secret that shall not be made manifest, nor hidden, that shall not be known and come abroad. BSB BSB: For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.
DRA Take heed therefore how you hear. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given: and whosoever hath not, that also which he thinketh he hath, shall be taken away from him. BSB BSB: Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers (Matthew 12:46–50; Mark 3:31–35)
DRA And his mother and brethren came unto him; and they could not come at him for the crowd. BSB BSB: Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd.
DRA And it was told him: Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. BSB BSB: He was told, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.”
DRA Who answering, said to them: My mother and my brethren are they who hear the word of God, and do it. BSB BSB: But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”
Jesus Calms the Storm (Psalm 107:1–43; Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41)
DRA And it came to pass on a certain day that he went into a little ship with his disciples, and he said to them: Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. BSB BSB: One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So He got into a boat with them and set out.
DRA And when they were sailing, he slept; and there came down a storm of wind upon the lake, and they were filled, and were in danger. BSB BSB: As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
DRA And they came and awaked him, saying: Master, we perish. But he arising, rebuked the wind and the rage of the water; and it ceased, and there was a calm. BSB BSB: The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and they subsided, and all was calm.
DRA And he said to them: Where is your faith? Who being afraid, wondered, saying one to another: Who is this, (think you), that he commandeth both the winds and the sea, and they obey him? BSB BSB: “Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed, they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”
The Demons and the Pigs (Matthew 8:28–34; Mark 5:1–20)
DRA And they sailed to the country of the Gerasens, which is over against Galilee. BSB BSB: Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee.
DRA And when he was come forth to the land, there met him a certain man who had a devil now a very long time, and he wore no clothes, neither did he abide in a house, but in the sepulchres. BSB BSB: When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs.
DRA And when he saw Jesus, he fell down before him; and crying out with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beseech thee, do not torment me. BSB BSB: When the man saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, shouting in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You not to torture me!”
DRA For he commanded the unclean spirit to go out of the man. For many times it seized him, and he was bound with chains, and kept in fetters; and breaking the bonds, he was driven by the devil into the deserts. BSB BSB: For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and been driven by the demon into solitary places.
DRA And Jesus asked him, saying: What is thy name? But he said: Legion; because many devils were entered into him. BSB BSB: “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him.
DRA And they besought him that he would not command them to go into the abyss. BSB BSB: And the demons kept begging Jesus not to order them to go into the Abyss.
DRA And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain; and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. BSB BSB: There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. So the demons begged Jesus to let them enter the pigs, and He gave them permission.
DRA The devils therefore went out of the man, and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were stifled. BSB BSB: Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
DRA Which when they that fed them saw done, they fled away, and told it in the city and in the villages. BSB BSB: When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside.
DRA And they went out to see what was done; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at his feet, clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid. BSB BSB: So the people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man whom the demons had left, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
DRA And they also that had seen, told them how he had been healed from the legion. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, those who had seen it reported how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
DRA And all the multitude of the country of the Gerasens besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear. And he, going up into the ship, returned back again. BSB BSB: Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, because great fear had taken hold of them. So He got into the boat and started back.
DRA Now the man, out of whom the devils were departed, besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying: BSB BSB: The man whom the demons had left begged to go with Jesus. But He sent him away, saying,
DRA Return to thy house, and tell how great things God hath done to thee. And he went through the whole city, publishing how great things Jesus had done to him. BSB BSB: “Return home and describe how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and proclaimed all over the town how much Jesus had done for him.
The Healing Touch of Jesus (Matthew 9:18–26; Mark 5:21–43)
DRA And it came to pass, that when Jesus was returned, the multitude received him: for they were all waiting for him. BSB BSB: When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.
DRA And behold there came a man whose name was Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at the feet of Jesus, beseeching him that he would come into his house: BSB BSB: Just then a synagogue leader named Jairus came and fell at Jesus’ feet. He begged Him to come to his house,
DRA For he had an only daughter, almost twelve years old, and she was dying. And it happened as he went, that he was thronged by the multitudes. BSB BSB: because his only daughter, who was about twelve, was dying. As Jesus went with him, the crowds pressed around Him,
DRA And there was a certain woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had bestowed all her substance on physicians, and could not be healed by any. BSB BSB: including a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. She had spent all her money on physicians, but no one was able to heal her.
DRA She came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment; and immediately the issue of her blood stopped. BSB BSB: She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
DRA And Jesus said: Who is it that touched me? And all denying, Peter and they that were with him said: Master, the multitudes throng and press thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me? BSB BSB: “Who touched Me?” Jesus asked. But they all denied it. “Master,” said Peter, “the people are crowding and pressing against You.”
DRA And Jesus said: Somebody hath touched me; for I know that virtue is gone out from me. BSB BSB: But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.”
DRA And the woman seeing that she was not hid, came trembling, and fell down before his feet, and declared before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was immediately healed. BSB BSB: Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been healed.
DRA But he said to her: Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go thy way in peace. BSB BSB: “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
DRA As he was yet speaking, there cometh one to the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him: Thy daughter is dead, trouble him not. BSB BSB: While He was still speaking, someone arrived from the house of the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he told Jairus. “Do not bother the Teacher anymore.”
DRA And Jesus hearing this word, answered the father of the maid: Fear not; believe only, and she shall be safe. BSB BSB: But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
DRA And when he was come to the house, he suffered not any man to go in with him, but Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the maiden. BSB BSB: When He entered the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.
DRA And all wept and mourned for her. But he said: Weep not; the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, everyone was weeping and mourning for her. But Jesus said, “Stop weeping; she is not dead but asleep.”
DRA And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. BSB BSB: And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.
DRA But he taking her by the hand, cried out, saying: Maid, arise. BSB BSB: But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!”
DRA And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And he bid them give her to eat. BSB BSB: Her spirit returned, and at once she got up. And He directed that she be given something to eat.
DRA And her parents were astonished, whom he charged to tell no man what was done. BSB BSB: Her parents were astounded, but Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
