Jesus Heals a Paralytic (Matthew 9:1–8; Luke 5:17–26)
DRA And it was heard that he was in the house, and many came together, so that there was no room; no, not even at the door; and he spoke to them the word. BSB BSB: they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room, not even outside the door, as Jesus spoke the word to them.

DRA And when they could not offer him unto him for the multitude, they uncovered the roof where he was; and opening it, they let down the bed wherein the man sick of the palsy lay. BSB BSB: Since they were unable to get to Jesus through the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat.
DRA And there were some of the scribes sitting there, and thinking in their hearts: BSB BSB: But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking in their hearts,
DRA Why doth this man speak thus? he blasphemeth. Who can forgive sins, but God only? BSB BSB: “Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
DRA Which Jesus presently knowing in his spirit, that they so thought within themselves, saith to them: Why think you these things in your hearts? BSB BSB: At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked.
DRA Which is easier, to say to the sick of the palsy: Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk? BSB BSB: “Which is easier: to say to a paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
DRA But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) BSB BSB: But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic,
DRA I say to thee: Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house. BSB BSB: “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”
DRA And immediately he arose; and taking up his bed, went his way in the sight of all; so that all wondered and glorified God, saying: We never saw the like. BSB BSB: And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of them all. As a result, they were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

DRA And when he was passing by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the receipt of custom; and he saith to him: Follow me. And rising up, he followed him. BSB BSB: As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.
DRA And it came to pass, that as he sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat down together with Jesus and his disciples. For they were many, who also followed him. BSB BSB: While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples—for there were many who followed Him.
DRA And the scribes and the Pharisees, seeing that he ate with publicans and sinners, said to his disiples: Why doth your master eat and drink with publicans and sinners? BSB BSB: When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Questions about Fasting (Matthew 9:14–15; Luke 5:33–35)
DRA And the disiples of John and the Pharisees used to fast; and they come and say to him: Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast; but thy disciples do not fast? BSB BSB: Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?”
DRA And Jesus saith to them: Can the children of the marriage fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast.
DRA But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them; and then they shall fast in those days. BSB BSB: But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
The Patches and the Wineskins (Matthew 9:16–17; Luke 5:36–39)
DRA No man seweth a piece of raw cloth to an old garment: otherwise the new piecing taketh away from the old, and there is made a greater rent. BSB BSB: No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.
DRA And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: otherwise the wine will burst the bottles, and both the wine will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost. But new wine must be put into new bottles. BSB BSB: And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”
The Lord of the Sabbath (1 Samuel 21:1–7; Matthew 12:1–8; Luke 6:1–5)
DRA And the Pharisees said to him: Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
DRA How he went into the house of God, under Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the loaves of proposition, which was not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave to them who were with him? BSB BSB: During the high priesthood of Abiathar, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.”
DRA And he said to them: The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. BSB BSB: Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
DRA Therefore the Son of man is Lord of the sabbath also. BSB BSB: Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
