The Tradition of the Elders (Mark 7:1–13)
DRA Then came to him from Jerusalem scribes and Pharisees, saying: BSB BSB: Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
DRA Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread. BSB BSB: “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.”
DRA But he answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said: BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
DRA Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death. BSB BSB: For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’
DRA But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee. BSB BSB: But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’
DRA And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition. BSB BSB: he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
DRA Hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying: BSB BSB: You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you:
DRA This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me. BSB BSB: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.
DRA And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men. BSB BSB: They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’”
What Defiles a Man (Mark 7:14–23)
DRA And having called together the multitudes unto him, he said to them: Hear ye and understand. BSB BSB: Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “Listen and understand.
DRA Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. BSB BSB: A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.”
DRA Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized? BSB BSB: Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
DRA But he answering them, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots.
DRA Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit. BSB BSB: Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
DRA And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable. BSB BSB: Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
DRA But he said: Are you also yet without understanding? BSB BSB: “Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked.
DRA Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy? BSB BSB: “Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated?
DRA But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man. BSB BSB: But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man.
DRA For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. BSB BSB: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.
DRA These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man. BSB BSB: These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.”
The Faith of the Canaanite Woman (Mark 7:24–30)
DRA And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to him: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grieviously troubled by the devil. BSB BSB: And a Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.”
DRA But she came and adored him, saying: Lord, help me. BSB BSB: The woman came and knelt before Him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
DRA Who answering, said: It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
DRA But she said: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters. BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
The Feeding of the Four Thousand (2 Kings 4:42–44; Mark 8:1–10)
DRA And when Jesus had passed away from thence, he came nigh the sea of Galilee. And going up into a mountain, he sat there. BSB BSB: Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain and sat down.
DRA And there came to him great multitudes, having with them the dumb, the blind, the lame, the maimed, and many others: and they cast them down at his feet, and he healed them: BSB BSB: Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them.
DRA So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, and the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel. BSB BSB: The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
DRA And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. BSB BSB: Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.”
DRA And the disciples say unto him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude? BSB BSB: The disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?”
DRA And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? But they said: Seven, and a few little fishes. BSB BSB: “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
DRA And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground. BSB BSB: And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground.
DRA And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the people. BSB BSB: Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
DRA And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took up seven baskets full, of what remained of the fragments. BSB BSB: They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
DRA And they that did eat, were four thousand men, beside children and women. BSB BSB: A total of four thousand men were fed, besides women and children.
DRA And having dismissed the multitude, he went up into a boat, and came into the coasts of Magedan. BSB BSB: After Jesus had dismissed the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
