The Parable of the Workers 2 DRA And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. BSB BSB: He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
DRA And going about the third hour, he saw others standing in the market place idle. BSB BSB: About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
DRA And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just. BSB BSB: ‘You also go into my vineyard,’ he said, ‘and I will pay you whatever is right.’
DRA And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner. BSB BSB: So they went. He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing.
DRA But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle? BSB BSB: About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ he asked.
DRA They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go you also into my vineyard. BSB BSB: ‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. So he told them, ‘You also go into my vineyard.’
DRA And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward: Call the labourers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last even to the first. BSB BSB: When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones hired and moving on to the first.’
DRA When therefore they were come, that came about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. BSB BSB: The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius.
DRA But when the first also came, they thought that they should receive more: and they also received every man a penny. BSB BSB: So when the original workers came, they assumed they would receive more. But each of them also received a denarius.
DRA And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house, BSB BSB: On receiving their pay, they began to grumble against the landowner.
DRA Saying: These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats. BSB BSB: ‘These men who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.’
DRA But he answering said to one of them: Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny? BSB BSB: But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did you not agree with me on one denarius?
DRA Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee. BSB BSB: Take your pay and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you.
DRA Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? is thy eye evil, because I am good? BSB BSB: Do I not have the right to do as I please with what is mine? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
DRA So shall the last be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen. BSB BSB: So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
The Third Prediction of the Passion (Mark 10:32–34; Luke 18:31–34)
DRA And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart, and said to them: BSB BSB: As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside and said,
DRA Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. BSB BSB: “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death
DRA And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified, and the third day he shall rise again. BSB BSB: and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. And on the third day He will be raised to life.”
A Mother’s Request (Mark 10:35–45)
DRA Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him. BSB BSB: Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and knelt down to make a request of Him.
DRA Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: Say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom. BSB BSB: “What do you want?” He inquired. She answered, “Declare that in Your kingdom one of these two sons of mine may sit at Your right hand, and the other at Your left.”
DRA And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can. BSB BSB: “You do not know what you are asking,” Jesus replied. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” the brothers answered.
DRA He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand, is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father. BSB BSB: “You will indeed drink My cup,” Jesus said. “But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom My Father has prepared them.”
DRA And the ten hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren. BSB BSB: When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
DRA But Jesus called them to him, and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that are the greater, exercise power upon them. BSB BSB: But Jesus called them aside and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.
DRA It shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be the greater among you, let him be your minister: BSB BSB: It shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
DRA And he that will be first among you, shall be your servant. BSB BSB: and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave—
DRA Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many. BSB BSB: just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
The Blind Men by the Road (Mark 10:46–52; Luke 18:35–43)
DRA And when they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. BSB BSB: As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.
DRA And behold two blind men sitting by the way side, heard that Jesus passed by, and they cried out, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us. BSB BSB: And there were two blind men sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
DRA And the multitude rebuked them that they should hold their peace. But they cried out the more, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us. BSB BSB: The crowd admonished them to be silent, but they cried out all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
DRA And Jesus stood, and called them, and said: What will ye that I do to you? BSB BSB: Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked.
DRA They say to him: Lord, that our eyes be opened. BSB BSB: “Lord,” they answered, “let our eyes be opened.”
DRA And Jesus having compassion on them, touched their eyes. And immediately they saw, and followed him. BSB BSB: Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and at once they received their sight and followed Him.
