The Parable of the Ten Virgins 1 DRA Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride. BSB BSB: “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
DRA And five of them were foolish, and five wise. BSB BSB: Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
DRA But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them: BSB BSB: The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.
DRA But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps. BSB BSB: But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.
DRA And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept. BSB BSB: When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
DRA And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh, go ye forth to meet him. BSB BSB: At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
DRA Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. BSB BSB: Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
DRA And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. BSB BSB: The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
DRA The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. BSB BSB: ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
DRA Now whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut. BSB BSB: But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
DRA But at last come also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us. BSB BSB: Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’
DRA But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not. BSB BSB: But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’
DRA Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour. BSB BSB: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
The Parable of the Talents (Luke 19:11–27)
DRA For even as a man going into a far country, called his servants, and delivered to them his goods; BSB BSB: For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions.
DRA And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to every one according to his proper ability: and immediately he took his journey. BSB BSB: To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent—each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey.
DRA And he that had received the five talents, went his way, and traded with the same, and gained other five. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents went at once and put them to work and gained five more.
DRA And in like manner he that had received the two, gained other two. BSB BSB: Likewise, the one with the two talents gained two more.
DRA But he that had received the one, going his way digged into the earth, and hid his lord’s money. BSB BSB: But the servant who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
DRA But after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reckoned with them. BSB BSB: After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
DRA And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents, behold I have gained other five over and above. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents came and presented five more. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’
DRA His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
DRA And he also that had received the two talents came and said: Lord, thou deliveredst two talents to me: behold I have gained other two. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.’
DRA His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
DRA But he that had received the one talent, came and said: Lord, I know that thou art a hard man; thou reapest where thou hast not sown, and gatherest where thou hast not strewed. BSB BSB: Finally, the servant who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
DRA And being afraid I went and hid thy talent in the earth: behold here thou hast that which is thine. BSB BSB: So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’
DRA And his lord answering, said to him: Wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sow not, and gather where I have not strewed: BSB BSB: ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master. ‘You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed.
DRA Thou oughtest therefore to have committed my money to the bankers, and at my coming I should have received my own with usury. BSB BSB: Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received it back with interest.
DRA Take ye away therefore the talent from him, and give it to him that hath ten talents. BSB BSB: Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.
DRA For to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall abound: but from him that hath not, that also which he seemeth to have shall be taken away. BSB BSB: For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
DRA And the unprofitable servant cast ye out into the exterior darkness. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. BSB BSB: And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
The Sheep and the Goats 32 DRA And all nations shall be gathered together before him, and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats: BSB BSB: All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
DRA And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. BSB BSB: He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.
DRA Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
DRA For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in: BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in,
DRA Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me. BSB BSB: I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
DRA Then shall the just answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry, and fed thee; thirsty, and gave thee drink? BSB BSB: Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?
DRA And when did we see thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and covered thee? BSB BSB: When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
DRA Or when did we see thee sick or in prison, and came to thee? BSB BSB: When did we see You sick or in prison and visit You?’
DRA And the king answering, shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. BSB BSB: And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’
DRA Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels. BSB BSB: Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
DRA For I was hungry, and you gave me not to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me not to drink. BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink,
DRA I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you covered me not: sick and in prison, and you did not visit me. BSB BSB: I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’
DRA Then they also shall answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee? BSB BSB: And they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
DRA Then he shall answer them, saying: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it not to one of these least, neither did you do it to me. BSB BSB: Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’
DRA And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting. BSB BSB: And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
