The Second Census of Israel (Numbers 1:1–4)
1 DRA After the blood of the guilty was shed, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest: BSB BSB: After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
2 DRA Number the whole sum of the children of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their houses and kindreds, all that are able to go forth to war. BSB BSB: “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
3 DRA Moses therefore and Eleazar the priest, being in the plains of Moab upon the Jordan over against Jericho, spoke to them that were BSB BSB: So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
4 DRA From twenty years old and upward, as the Lord had commanded: and this is the number of them: BSB BSB: “Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older, as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
The Tribe of Reuben 5 DRA Ruben the firstborn of Israel. His sons were Henoch, of whom is the family of the Henochites: and Phallu, of whom is the family of the Phalluites: BSB BSB: Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. These were the descendants of Reuben: The Hanochite clan from Hanoch, the Palluite clan from Pallu,
6 DRA And Hesron, of whom is the family of the Hesronites: and Charmi, of whom is the family of the Charmites. BSB BSB: the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi.
7 DRA These are the families of the stock of Ruben: whose number was found to be forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Reuben, and their registration numbered 43,730.
8 DRA The son of Phallu was Eliab. BSB BSB: Now the son of Pallu was Eliab,
9 DRA His sons, were Namuel and Dathan and Abiron. These are Dathan and Abiron the princes of the people, that rose against Moses and Aaron in the sedition of Core, when they rebelled against the Lord: BSB BSB: and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah who rebelled against the LORD.
10 DRA And the earth opening her mouth swallowed up Core, many others dying, when the fire burned two hundred and fifty men. And there was a great miracle wrought, BSB BSB: And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a warning sign.
11 DRA That when Core perished, his sons did not perish. BSB BSB: However, the line of Korah did not die out.
The Tribe of Simeon 12 DRA The sons of Simeon by their kindreds: Namuel, of him is the family of the Namuelites: Jamin, of him is the family of the Jaminites: Jachin, of him is the family of the Jachinites: BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Simeon by their clans: The Nemuelite clan from Nemuel, the Jaminite clan from Jamin, the Jachinite clan from Jachin,
13 DRA Zare, of him is the family of the Zarites: Saul, of him is the family of the Saulites. BSB BSB: the Zerahite clan from Zerah, and the Shaulite clan from Shaul.
14 DRA These are the families of the stock of Simeon, of which the whole number was twenty-two thousand two hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Simeon, and there were 22,200 men.
The Tribe of Gad 15 DRA The sons of Gad by their kindreds: Sephon, of hin; Is the family of the Sephonites: Aggi, of him is the family of the Aggites: Suni, of him is the family of the Sunites: BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gad by their clans: The Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Haggi, the Shunite clan from Shuni,
16 DRA Ozni, of him is the family of the Oznites: Her, of him is the family of the Herites: BSB BSB: the Oznite clan from Ozni, the Erite clan from Eri,
17 DRA Arod, of him is the family of the Arodites: Ariel, of him is the family of the Arielites. BSB BSB: the Arodite clan from Arod, and the Arelite clan from Areli.
18 DRA These are the families of Gad, of which the whole number was forty thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Gad, and their registration numbered 40,500.
The Tribe of Judah 19 DRA The sons of Juda, Her and Onan, who both died in the land of Chanaan. BSB BSB: The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.
20 DRA And the sons of Juda by their kindreds were: Sela, of whom is the family of the Selaites: Phares, of whom is the family of the Pharesites: Zare, of whom is the family of the Zarites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
21 DRA Moreover the sons of Phares were: Hesron, of whom is the family of the Hesronites: and Hamul, of whom is the family of the Hamulites. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
22 DRA These are the families of Juda, of which the whole number was seventy-six thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered 76,500.
The Tribe of Issachar 23 DRA The sons of Issachar, by their kindreds: Thola, of whom is the family of the Tholaites: Phua, of whom is the family of the Phuaites: BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah,
24 DRA Jasub, of whom is the family of the Jasubites: Semran, of whom is the family of the Semranites. BSB BSB: the Jashubite clan from Jashub, and the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
25 DRA These are the kindreds of Issachar, whose number was sixty-four thousand three hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Issachar, and their registration numbered 64,300.
The Tribe of Zebulun 26 DRA The sons of Zabulon by their kindreds: Sared, of whom is the family of the Saredites: Elon, of whom is the family of the Elonites: Jalel, of whom is the family of the Jalelites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Zebulun by their clans: The Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
27 DRA These are the kindreds of Zabulon, whose number was sixty thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Zebulun, and their registration numbered 60,500.
The Tribe of Manasseh 28 DRA The sons of Joseph by their kindred, Manasses and Ephraim. BSB BSB: The descendants of Joseph included the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim.
29 DRA Of Manasses was born Machir, of whom is the family of the Machirites. Machir beget Galaad, of whom is the family of the Galaadites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Manasseh: The Machirite clan from Machir, the father of Gilead, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead.
30 DRA Galaad had sons: Jezer, of whom is the family of the Jezerites: and Helec, of whom is the family of the Helecites: BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gilead: the Iezerite clan from Iezer, the Helekite clan from Helek,
31 DRA And Asriel, of whom is the family of the Asrielites: and Sechem, of whom is the family of the Sechemites: BSB BSB: the Asrielite clan from Asriel, the Shechemite clan from Shechem,
32 DRA And Semida, of whom is the family of the Semidaites: and Hepher, of whom is the family of the Hepherites. BSB BSB: the Shemidaite clan from Shemida, and the Hepherite clan from Hepher.
33 DRA And Hepher was the father of Salphaad, who had no sons, but only daughters, whose names are these: Maala, and Noa, and Hegla, and Melcha, and Thersa. BSB BSB: Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
34 DRA These are the families of Manasses, and the number of them fifty-two thousand seven hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Manasseh, and their registration numbered 52,700.
The Tribe of Ephraim 35 DRA And the sons of Ephraim by their kindreds were these: Suthala, of whom is the family of the Suthalaites: Becher, of whom is the family of the Becherites: Thehen, of whom is the family of the Thehenites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan.
36 DRA Now the son of Suthala was Heran, of whom is the family of the Heranites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Shuthelah were the Eranite clan from Eran.
37 DRA These are the kindreds of the sons of Ephraim: whose number was thirty-two thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Ephraim, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of Joseph.
The Tribe of Benjamin 38 DRA These are the sons of Joseph by their families. The sons of Benjamin in their kindreds: Bela, of whom is the family of the Belaites: Asbel, of whom is the family of the Asbelites: Ahiram, of whom is the family of the Ahiramites: BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans: The Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram,
39 DRA Supham, of whom is the family of the Suphamites: Hupham, of whom is the family of the Huphamites. BSB BSB: the Shuphamite clan from Shupham, and the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
40 DRA The sons of Bela: Hered, and Noeman. Of Hered, is the family of the Heredites: of Noeman, the family of tile Noemanites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Bela from Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman.
41 DRA These are the sons of Benjamin by their kindreds, whose number was forty-five thousand six hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Benjamin, and their registration numbered 45,600.
The Tribe of Dan 42 DRA The sons of Dan by their kindreds: Suham, of whom is the family of the Suhamites: These are the kindreds of Dan by their families. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan.
43 DRA All were Suhamites, whose number was sixty-four thousand four hundred. BSB BSB: All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
The Tribe of Asher 44 DRA The sons of Aser by their kindreds: Jemna, of whom is the family of the Jemnaites: Jessui, of whom is the family of the Jessuites: Brie, of whom is the family of the Brieites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Asher by their clans: The Imnite clan from Imnah, the Ishvite clan from Ishvi, and the Beriite clan from Beriah.
45 DRA The sons of Brie: Heber, of whom is the family of the Heberites: and Melchiel, of whom is the family of the Melchielites. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Beriah: the Heberite clan from Heber and the Malchielite clan from Malchiel.
46 DRA And the name of the daughter of Aser, was Sara. BSB BSB: And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
47 DRA These are the kindreds of the sons of Aser, and their number fifty-three thousand four hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Asher, and their registration numbered 53,400.
The Tribe of Naphtali 48 DRA The sons of Nephtali by their kindreds: Jesiel, of whom is the family of the Jesielites: Guni, of whom is the family of the Gunites: BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Naphtali by their clans: The Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni,
49 DRA Jeser, of whom is the family of the Jeserites: Sellem, of whom is the family of the Sellemites. BSB BSB: the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
50 DRA These are the kindreds of the sons of Nephtali by their families: whose number was forty-five thousand four hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Naphtali, and their registration numbered 45,400.
51 DRA This is the sum of the children of Israel, that were reckoned up, six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty. BSB BSB: These men of Israel numbered 601,730 in all.
Inheritance by Lot 52 DRA And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
53 DRA To these shall the land be divided for their possessions according to the number of names. BSB BSB: “The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
54 DRA To the greater number thou shalt give a greater portion, and to the fewer a less: to every one, as they have now been reckoned up, shall a possession be delivered: BSB BSB: Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
55 DRA Yet so that by lot the land be divided to the tribe and families. BSB BSB: Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
56 DRA Whatsoever shall fall by lot, that shall be taken by the more, or the fewer. BSB BSB: Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
The Levites Numbered 57 DRA This also is the number of the sons of Levi by their families: Gerson, of whom is the family of the Gersonites: Caath, of whom is the family of the Caathites: Merari, of whom is the family of the Merarites. BSB BSB: Now these were the Levites numbered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
58 DRA These are the families of Levi: The family of Lobni, the family of Hebroni, the family of Moholi, the family of Musi, the family of Core. Now Caath beget Amram: BSB BSB: These were the families of the Levites: The Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Now Kohath was the father of Amram,
59 DRA Who had to wife Jochabed the daughter of Levi, who was horn to him in Egypt. She bore to her husband Amram sons, Aaron and Moses, and Mary their sister. BSB BSB: and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She was also a daughter of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60 DRA Of Aaron were born Nadab and Abiu, and Eleazar and Ithamar: BSB BSB: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
61 DRA Of whom Nadab and Abiu died, when they had offered the strange fire before the Lord. BSB BSB: but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.
62 DRA And all that were numbered, were twenty-three thousand males from one month old and upward: for they were not reckoned up among the children of Israel, neither was a possession given to them with the rest. BSB BSB: The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
Only Caleb and Joshua Remain 63 DRA This is the number of the children of Israel, that were enrolled by Moses and Eleazar the priest, in the plains of Moab upon the Jordan, over against Jericho. BSB BSB: These were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
64 DRA Among whom there was not one of them that were numbered before by Moses and Aaron in the desert of Sinai. BSB BSB: Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
65 DRA For the Lord had foretold that they should die in the wilderness. And none remained of them, but Caleb the son of Jephone, and Josue the son of Nun. BSB BSB: For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
