Dead to Sin, Alive to God (2 Corinthians 4:7–18)
DRA What shall we say, then? shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? BSB BSB: What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase?
DRA God forbid. For we that are dead to sin, how shall we live any longer therein? BSB BSB: Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?
DRA Know you not that all we, who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in his death? BSB BSB: Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
DRA For we are buried together with him by baptism into death; that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. BSB BSB: We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.
DRA For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection. BSB BSB: For if we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection.
DRA Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin may be destroyed, to the end that we may serve sin no longer. BSB BSB: We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.
DRA For he that is dead is justified from sin. BSB BSB: For anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
DRA Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall live also together with Christ: BSB BSB: Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.
DRA Knowing that Christ rising again from the dead, dieth now no more, death shall no more have dominion over him. BSB BSB: For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.
DRA For in that he died to sin, he died once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God: BSB BSB: The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God.
DRA So do you also reckon, that you are dead to sin, but alive unto God, in Christ Jesus our Lord. BSB BSB: So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
DRA Let no sin therefore reign in your mortal body, so as to obey the lusts thereof. BSB BSB: Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires.
DRA Neither yield ye your members as instruments of iniquity unto sin; but present yourselves to God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of justice unto God. BSB BSB: Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness.
DRA For sin shall not have dominion over you; for you are not under the law, but under grace. BSB BSB: For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
The Wages of Sin 15 DRA What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. BSB BSB: What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Certainly not!
DRA Know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are whom you obey, whether it be of sin unto death, or of obedience unto justice. BSB BSB: Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness?
DRA But thanks be to God, that you were the servants of sin, but have obeyed from the heart, unto that form of doctrine, into which you have been delivered. BSB BSB: But thanks be to God that, though you once were slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed.
DRA Being then freed from sin, we have been made servants of justice. BSB BSB: You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
DRA I speak an human thing, because of the infirmity of your flesh. For as you have yielded your members to serve uncleanness and iniquity, unto iniquity; so now yield your members to serve justice, unto sanctification. BSB BSB: I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to escalating wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.
DRA For when you were the servants of sin, you were free men to justice. BSB BSB: For when you were slaves to sin, you were free of obligation to righteousness.
DRA What fruit therefore had you then in those things, of which you are now ashamed? For the end of them is death. BSB BSB: What fruit did you reap at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The outcome of those things is death.
DRA But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end life everlasting. BSB BSB: But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life.
DRA For the wages of sin is death. But the grace of God, life everlasting, in Christ Jesus our Lord. BSB BSB: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
