   (Romans 5:12–21)

2. 1ENGLXX20And the two were naked, both Adam and his wife, and were not ashamed. Now the serpent was the most crafty of all the brutes on the earth, which the Lord God made, and the serpent said to the woman, Therefore has God said, Eat not of every tree of the garden?BSBBSB: Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’”
3. 2ENGLXX20And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden,BSBBSB: The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
4. 3ENGLXX20but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, You⌃ shall not eat of it, neither shall you⌃ touch it, lest you⌃ die.BSBBSB: but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”
5. 4ENGLXX20And the serpent said to the woman, You⌃ shall not surely die.BSBBSB: “You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman.
6. 5ENGLXX20For God knew that in whatever day you⌃ should eat of it your eyes would be opened, and you⌃ would be as gods, knowing good and evil.BSBBSB: “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
7. 6ENGLXX20And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes to look upon and beautiful to contemplate, and having taken of its fruit she ate, and she gave to her husband also with her, and they ate.BSBBSB: When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
8. 7ENGLXX20And the eyes of both were opened, and they perceived that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons to go round them.BSBBSB: And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.

9. God Arraigns Adam and Eve

10. 8ENGLXX20And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the afternoon; and both Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God in the midst of the trees of the garden.BSBBSB: Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
11. 9ENGLXX20And the Lord God called Adam and said to him, Adam, where are you?BSBBSB: But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
12. 10ENGLXX20And he said to him, I heard your voice as you walked in the garden, and I feared because I was naked and I hid myself.BSBBSB: “I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
13. 11ENGLXX20And God said to him, Who told you that you were naked, unless you have eaten of the tree concerning which I charged you of it alone not to eat?BSBBSB: “Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
14. 12ENGLXX20And Adam said, The woman whom you gave to be with me—she gave me of the tree and I ate.BSBBSB: And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
15. 13ENGLXX20And the Lord God said to the woman, Why have you done this? And the woman said, The serpent deceived me and I ate.BSBBSB: Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “and I ate.”

16. The Fate of the Serpent

17. 14ENGLXX20And the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this you are cursed above all cattle and all the brutes of the earth, on your breast and belly you shall go, and you shall eat earth all the days of your life.BSBBSB: So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
18. 15ENGLXX20And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed, he shall watch against your head, and you shall watch against his heel.BSBBSB: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

19. The Punishment of Mankind

20. 16ENGLXX20And to the woman he said, I will greatly multiply your pains and your groanings; in pain you shall bring forth children, and your submission shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over you.BSBBSB: To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
21. 17ENGLXX20And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and eaten of the tree concerning which I charged you of it only not to eat—of that you have eaten, cursed is the ground in your labors, in pain shall you eat of it all the days of your life.BSBBSB: And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
22. 18ENGLXX20Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.BSBBSB: Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
23. 19ENGLXX20In the sweat of your face shall you eat your bread until you return to the earth out of which you were taken, for earth you are and to earth you shall return.BSBBSB: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
24. 20ENGLXX20And Adam called the name of his wife Life, because she was the mother of all living.BSBBSB: And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living.

25. The Expulsion from Paradise

26. 21ENGLXX20And the Lord God made for Adam and his wife garments of skin, and clothed them.BSBBSB: And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
27. 22ENGLXX20And God said, Behold, Adam is become as one of us, to know good and evil, and now lest at any time he stretch forth his hand, and take of the tree of life and eat, and so he shall live forever—BSBBSB: Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...”
28. 23ENGLXX20So the Lord God sent him forth out of the garden of Delight to cultivate the ground out of which he was taken.BSBBSB: Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
29. 24ENGLXX20And he cast out Adam and caused him to dwell over against the garden of Delight, and stationed the cherubs and the fiery sword that turns about to keep the way of the tree of life.BSBBSB: So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.
