Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind
1
ENGLXX20
He shall come
into their midst as the land, as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and have sinned against my law.
BSB
BSB:
Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms over the house of the LORD, because the people have transgressed My covenant and rebelled against My law.
2
ENGLXX20
They shall soon cry out to me,
saying
, O God, we know you.
BSB
BSB:
Israel cries out to Me, “O our God, we know You!”
3
ENGLXX20
For Israel has turned away from good things; they have pursued an enemy.
BSB
BSB:
But Israel has rejected good; an enemy will pursue him.
4
ENGLXX20
They have made kings for themselves, but not by me: they have ruled, but they did not make it known to me:
of
their silver and their gold they have made images to themselves, that they might be destroyed.
BSB
BSB:
They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes, but without My approval. With their silver and gold they make themselves idols, to their own destruction.
5
ENGLXX20
Cast off your calf, O Samaria; my anger is kindled against them: how long will they be unable to purge themselves in Israel?
BSB
BSB:
He has rejected your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence?
6
ENGLXX20
Whereas the workman made it, and it is not God; therefore your calf, Samaria, was a deceiver:
BSB
BSB:
For this thing is from Israel—a craftsman made it, and it is not God. It will be broken to pieces, that calf of Samaria.
7
ENGLXX20
for they sowed blighted
seed
, and their destruction shall await them, a sheaf of corn that avails not to make meal; and even if it should produce it, strangers shall devour it.
BSB
BSB:
For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would swallow it up.
8
ENGLXX20
Israel is swallowed up: now is he become among the nations as a worthless vessel.
BSB
BSB:
Israel is swallowed up! Now they are among the nations like a worthless vessel.
9
ENGLXX20
For they have gone up to the Assyrians: Ephraim has been strengthened against himself; they loved gifts.
BSB
BSB:
For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey on its own. Ephraim has hired lovers.
10
ENGLXX20
Therefore shall they be delivered to the nations: now I will receive them, and they shall cease a little to anoint a king and princes.
BSB
BSB:
Though they hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes.
11
ENGLXX20
Because Ephraim has multiplied altars,
his
beloved altars are become sins to him.
BSB
BSB:
Though Ephraim multiplied the altars for sin, they became his altars for sinning.
12
ENGLXX20
I will write down a multitude
of commands
for him; but his statutes are accounted strange things,
even
the beloved altars.
BSB
BSB:
Though I wrote for them the great things of My law, they regarded them as something strange.
13
ENGLXX20
For if they should offer a sacrifice, and eat flesh, the lord will not accept them: now will he remember their iniquities, and will take vengeance on their sins: they have returned to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things among the Assyrians.
BSB
BSB:
Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me, and though they eat the meat, the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt.
14
ENGLXX20
And Israel has forgotten him that made him, and they have built fanes, and Juda has multiplied walled cities: but I will send fire on his cities, and it shall devour their foundations.
BSB
BSB:
Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has multiplied its fortified cities. But I will send fire upon their cities, and it will consume their citadels.
