1. Jeremiah Remains in Judah

2. 1ENGLXX20And you say to me, Buy you the field for money; and I wrote a book, and sealed it, and took the testimony of witnesses: and the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: shall anything be hidden from me!BSBBSB: This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had released him at Ramah, having found him bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon.
3. 2ENGLXX20Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel; This city shall certainly be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it:BSBBSB: The captain of the guard found Jeremiah and said to him, “The LORD your God decreed this disaster on this place,
4. 3ENGLXX20and the Chaldeans shall come to war against this city, and they shall burn this city with fire, and shall burn down the houses wherein they burnt incense on the roofs thereof to Baal, and poured drink-offerings to other gods, to provoke me.BSBBSB: and now the LORD has fulfilled it; He has done just as He said. Because you people have sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed His voice, this thing has happened to you.
5. 4ENGLXX20For the children of Israel and the children of Juda alone did evil in my sight from their youth. For this city was obnoxious to my anger and my wrath, from the day that they built it even to this day; that I should remove it from my presence, because of all the wickedness of the children of Israel and Juda, which they wrought to provoke me, they and their kings, and their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, the men of Juda, and the dwellers in Jerusalem.BSBBSB: But now, behold, I am freeing you today from the chains that were on your wrists. If it pleases you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will take care of you. But if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, go no farther. Look, the whole land is before you. Wherever it seems good and right to you, go there.”
6. 5ENGLXX20And they turned the back to me, and not the face: whereas I taught them early in the morning, but they listened no more to receive instructions. And they set their pollutions in the house, on which my name was called, by their uncleannesses. And they built to Baal the altars that are in the valley of the son of Ennom, to offer their sons and their daughters to king Moloch; which things I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Juda to sin.BSBBSB: But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go anywhere else that seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a ration and a gift and released him.
7. 6ENGLXX20And now thus has the Lord God of Israel said concerning this city, of which you say, it shall be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by famine, and banishment.BSBBSB: So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left in the land.

8. Gedaliah Governs in Judah

   (2 Kings 25:22–24)

9. 7ENGLXX20Behold, I will gather them out of every land, where I have scattered them in my anger, and my wrath, and great fury; and I will bring them back into this place, and will cause them to dwell safely: and they shall be to me a people, and I will be to them a god. And I will give them another way, and another heart, to fear me continually, and that for good to them and their children after them.BSBBSB: When all the commanders and men of the armies in the field heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam over the land and that he had put him in charge of the men, women, and children who were the poorest of the land and had not been exiled to Babylon,
10. 8ENGLXX20And I will make with them an everlasting covenant, which I will by no means turn away from them, and I will put my fear into their heart, that they may not depart from me. And I will visit them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, and with all my heart, and with all my soul.BSBBSB: they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite—they and their men.
11. 9ENGLXX20For thus says the Lord; As I have brought upon this people all these great evils, so will I bring upon them all the good things which I pronounced upon them. And there shall yet be fields bought in the land, of which you say, it shall be destitute of man and beast; and they are delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans.BSBBSB: Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore an oath to them and their men, assuring them, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.
12. 10ENGLXX20And they shall buy fields for money, and you shall write a book, and seal it, and shall take the testimony of witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and round about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Juda, and in the cities of the mountain, and in the cities of the plain, and in the cities of the south: for I will turn their captivity.BSBBSB: As for me, I will stay in Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us. As for you, gather wine grapes, summer fruit, and oil, place them in your storage jars, and live in the cities you have taken.”
13. 11ENGLXX20And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias the second time, when he was yet bound in the court of the prison, saying, Thus says the Lord, who made the earth and formed it, to establish it; the Lord is his name; Cry to me, and I will answer you, and I will declare to you great and mighty things, which you know not.BSBBSB: When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom, and all the other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over them,
14. 12ENGLXX20For thus says the Lord concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the king of Juda, which have been pulled down for mounds and fortifications,BSBBSB: they all returned from all the places to which they had been banished and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered an abundance of wine grapes and summer fruit.

15. The Plot against Gedaliah

16. 13ENGLXX20to fight against the Chaldeans, and to fill it with the corpses of men, whom I struck in my anger and my wrath, and turned away my face from them, for all their wickedness:BSBBSB: Meanwhile, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies in the field came to Gedaliah at Mizpah
17. 14ENGLXX20Behold, I bring upon her healing and cure, and I will show myself to them, and will heal her, and make both peace and security. And I will turn the captivity of Juda, and the captivity of Israel, and will build them, even as before.BSBBSB: and said to him, “Are you aware that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.
18. 15ENGLXX20And I will cleanse them from all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned against me, and will not remember their sins, whereby they have sinned against me, and revolted from me. And it shall be for joy and praise, and for glory to all the people of the earth, who shall hear all the good that I will do: and they shall fear and be provoked for all the good things and for all the peace which I will bring upon them.BSBBSB: Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah at Mizpah. “Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah,” he said. “No one will know it. Why should he take your life and scatter all the people of Judah who have gathered to you, so that the remnant of Judah would perish?”
19. 16ENGLXX20Thus says the Lord; There shall yet be heard in this place, of which you⌃ say, it is destitute of men and cattle, in the cities of Juda, and in the streets of Jerusalem, the places that have been made desolate for lack of men and cattle,BSBBSB: But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Do not do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is a lie.”
