1. Judgment on Moab

   (Isaiah 15:1–9)

2. 2ENGLXX20And they came to Godolias into the land of Juda, to Massepha, and gathered grapes, and very much summer fruit, and oil.BSBBSB: There is no longer praise for Moab; in Heshbon they devise evil against her: ‘Come, let us cut her off from nationhood.’ You too, O people of Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you.
3. 5ENGLXX20And Joanan the son of Caree, and all the leaders of the host, who were in the fields, came to Godolias to Massepha,BSBBSB: For on the ascent to Luhith they weep bitterly as they go, and on the descent to Horonaim cries of distress resound over the destruction:
4. 8ENGLXX20and said to him, Do you indeed know that king Beleissa son of Ammon has sent Ismael to you to kill you? But Godolias believed them not.BSBBSB: The destroyer will move against every city, and not one town will escape. The valley will also be ruined, and the high plain will be destroyed, as the LORD has said.
5. 11ENGLXX20And Joanan said to Godolias secretly in Massepha, I will go now and strike Ismael, and let no man know it; lest he kill you, and all the Jews that are gathered to you be dispersed, and the remnant of Juda perish.BSBBSB: Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like wine on its dregs; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his flavor has remained the same, and his aroma is unchanged.
6. 13ENGLXX20But Godolias said to Joanan, Do not the thing, for you speak lies concerning Ismael.BSBBSB: Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was ashamed when they trusted in Bethel.
7. 17ENGLXX20Now it came to pass in the seventh month that Ismael the son of Nathanias the son of Eleasa of the seed royal, came, and ten men with him, to Godolias to Massepha: and they ate bread there together.BSBBSB: Mourn for him, all you who surround him, everyone who knows his name; tell how the mighty scepter is shattered—the glorious staff!
8. 18ENGLXX20And Ismael rose up, and the ten men that were with him, and struck Godolias, whom the king of Babylon had appointed governor over the land,BSBBSB: Come down from your glory; sit on parched ground, O daughter dwelling in Dibon, for the destroyer of Moab has come against you; he has destroyed your fortresses.
9. 20ENGLXX20and all the Jews that were with him in Massepha, and all the Chaldeans that were found there.BSBBSB: Moab is put to shame, for it has been shattered. Wail and cry out! Declare by the Arnon that Moab is destroyed.
10. 24ENGLXX20And it came to pass on the second day after he had struck Godolias, and no man knew of it,BSBBSB: upon Kerioth, Bozrah, and all the towns of Moab, those far and near.
11. 28ENGLXX20that there came men from Sychem, and from Salem, and from Samaria, even eighty men, having their beards shaven, and their clothes torn, and beating their breasts, and they had manna and frankincense in their hands, to bring them into the house of the Lord.BSBBSB: Abandon the towns and settle among the rocks, O dwellers of Moab! Be like a dove that nests at the mouth of a cave.
12. 29ENGLXX20And Ismael went out to meet them; and they went on and wept: and he said to them, Come in to Godolias.BSBBSB: We have heard of Moab’s pomposity, his exceeding pride and conceit, his proud arrogance and haughtiness of heart.
13. 33ENGLXX20And it came to pass, when they had entered into the midst of the city, that he killed them and cast them into a pit.BSBBSB: Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard and from the fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; their shouts are not for joy.
14. 34ENGLXX20But ten men were found there, and they said to Ismael, Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field, wheat and barley, honey and oil. So he passed by, and killed them not in the midst of their brethren.BSBBSB: There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; they raise their voices to Jahaz, from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim have dried up.
15. 36ENGLXX20Now the pit into which Ismael cast all whom he struck, is the great pit, which king Asa had made for fear of Baasa king of Israel: even this Ismael filled with slain men.BSBBSB: Therefore My heart laments like a flute for Moab; it laments like a flute for the men of Kir-heres, because the wealth they acquired has perished.
16. 38ENGLXX20And Ismael brought back all the people that were left in Massepha, and the king's daughter, whom the captain of the guard had committed in charge to Godolias the son of Achicam: and he went away beyond the children of Ammon.BSBBSB: On all the rooftops of Moab and in the public squares, everyone is mourning; for I have shattered Moab like an unwanted jar,” declares the LORD.
17. 39ENGLXX20And Joanan the son of Caree, and all the leaders of the host that were with him, heard of all the evil deeds which Ismael had done.BSBBSB: “How shattered it is! How they wail! How Moab has turned his back in shame! Moab has become an object of ridicule and horror to all those around him.”
18. 42ENGLXX20And they brought all their army, and went to fight against him, and found him near much water in Gabaon.BSBBSB: Moab will be destroyed as a nation because he vaunted himself against the LORD.
19. 44ENGLXX20And it came to pass, when all the people that was with Ismael saw Joanan, and the leaders of the host that was with him,BSBBSB: “Whoever flees the panic will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare. For I will bring upon Moab the year of their punishment,” declares the LORD.
20. 45ENGLXX20that they returned to Joanan.BSBBSB: “Those who flee will stand helpless in Heshbon’s shadow, because fire has gone forth from Heshbon and a flame from within Sihon. It devours the foreheads of Moab and the skulls of the sons of tumult.
21. 46ENGLXX20But Ismael escaped with eight men and went to the children of Ammon.BSBBSB: Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh have perished; for your sons have been taken into exile and your daughters have gone into captivity.
22. 47ENGLXX20And Joanan, and all the leaders of the host that were with him, took all the remnant of the people, whom he had brought back from Ismael, mighty men in war, and the women, and the other property, and the eunuchs, whom they had brought back from Gabaon:BSBBSB: Yet in the latter days I will restore Moab from captivity,” declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.
