1. Zephaniah Prophesies Judgment on Judah

   (Matthew 13:36–43)

2. 1ENGWEBBEThe LORD’s word which came to Zephaniah, the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah, the son of Amon, king of Judah.BSBBSB: This is the word of the LORD that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:
3. 2ENGWEBBEI will utterly sweep away everything from the surface of the earth, says the LORD.BSBBSB: “I will completely sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.
4. 3ENGWEBBEI will sweep away man and animal. I will sweep away the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and the heaps of rubble with the wicked. I will cut off man from the surface of the earth, says the LORD.BSBBSB: “I will sweep away man and beast; I will sweep away the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, and the idols with their wicked worshipers. I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.
5. 4ENGWEBBEI will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place—the name of the idolatrous and pagan priests,BSBBSB: “I will stretch out My hand against Judah and against all who dwell in Jerusalem. 6. 5ENGWEBBEthose who worship the army of the sky on the housetops, those who worship and swear by the LORD and also swear by Malcam,BSBBSB: those who bow on the rooftops to worship the host of heaven, those who bow down and swear by the LORD but also swear by Milcom,
7. 6ENGWEBBEthose who have turned back from following the LORD, and those who haven’t sought the LORD nor enquired after him.BSBBSB: and those who turn back from following the LORD, neither seeking the LORD nor inquiring of Him.”

8. The Day of the LORD

9. 7ENGWEBBEBe silent at the presence of the Lord GOD, for the day of the LORD is at hand. For the LORD has prepared a sacrifice. 12. 10ENGWEBBEIn that day, says the LORD, there will be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.BSBBSB: On that day,” declares the LORD, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second District, and a loud crashing from the hills.
13. 11ENGWEBBEWail, you inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the people of Canaan are undone! All those who were loaded with silver are cut off.BSBBSB: Wail, O dwellers of the Hollow, for all your merchants will be silenced; all who weigh out silver will be cut off.
14. 12ENGWEBBEIt will happen at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are settled on their dregs, who say in their heart, “The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.”BSBBSB: And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men settled in complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’
15. 13ENGWEBBETheir wealth will become a plunder, and their houses a desolation. Yes, they will build houses, but won’t inhabit them. 16. 14ENGWEBBEThe great day of the LORD is near. It is near and hurries greatly, the voice of the day of the LORD. The mighty man cries there bitterly.BSBBSB: The great Day of the LORD is near—near and coming quickly. Listen, the Day of the LORD! Then the cry of the mighty will be bitter.
17. 15ENGWEBBEThat day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,BSBBSB: That day will be a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,
18. 16ENGWEBBEa day of the trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities and against the high battlements.BSBBSB: a day of horn blast and battle cry against the fortified cities, and against the high corner towers.
19. 17ENGWEBBEI will bring such distress on men that they will walk like blind men because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.BSBBSB: I will bring such distress on mankind that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.
20. 18ENGWEBBENeither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.BSBBSB: Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the Day of the LORD’s wrath. The whole earth will be consumed by the fire of His jealousy.” For indeed, He will make a sudden end of all who dwell on the earth.
