Introduction to 1 John
The Word of Life (Luke 24:36–49; John 20:19–23)
2 ENGF35 —oh yes, the Life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and declare to you that eternal Life who was in the presence of the Father and was manifested to us— BSB BSB: And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.
3 ENGF35 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, so that you also may have fellowship with us; indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.
4 ENGF35 Yes, we write these things to you so that our joy may be fulfilled. BSB BSB: We write these things so that our joy may be complete.
Walking in the Light (John 8:12–29)
5 ENGF35 Now this is the message that we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and there is no darkness at all in Him. BSB BSB: And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
6 ENGF35 If we claim that we have fellowship with Him while walking in the darkness, we are lying and not living the truth. BSB BSB: If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
7 ENGF35 But if we walk in the light just as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. BSB BSB: But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
9 ENGF35 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous so as to forgive us those sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. BSB BSB: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 ENGF35 If we claim that we have not sinned, we call Him a liar and His Word is not in us. BSB BSB: If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.
