2. 1ENGKJVCPAfter this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.BSBBSB: Some time later there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
3. 2ENGKJVCPNow there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.BSBBSB: Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool with five covered colonnades, which in Hebrew is called Bethesda.
4. 3ENGKJVCPIn these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.BSBBSB: On these walkways lay a great number of the sick, the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed.
5. 4ENGKJVCPFor an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in, was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.BSBBSB: Not in the BSB
   Not in the earliest manuscripts
6. 5ENGKJVCPAnd a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.BSBBSB: One man there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
7. 6ENGKJVCPWhen Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?BSBBSB: When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had spent a long time in this condition, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
8. 7ENGKJVCPThe impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.BSBBSB: “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am on my way, someone else goes in before me.”
9. 8ENGKJVCPJesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.BSBBSB: Then Jesus told him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”
10. 9ENGKJVCPAnd immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.BSBBSB: Immediately the man was made well, and he picked up his mat and began to walk. Now this happened on the Sabbath day,
11. 10ENGKJVCPThe Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.BSBBSB: so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath! It is unlawful for you to carry your mat.”
12. 11ENGKJVCPHe answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.BSBBSB: But he answered, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
13. 12ENGKJVCPThen asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?BSBBSB: “Who is this man who told you to pick it up and walk?” they asked.
14. 13ENGKJVCPAnd he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.BSBBSB: But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while the crowd was there.
15. 14ENGKJVCPAfterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.BSBBSB: Afterward, Jesus found the man at the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you.”
16. 15ENGKJVCPThe man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.BSBBSB: And the man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

17. The Father and the Son

18. 16ENGKJVCPAnd therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.BSBBSB: Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews began to persecute Him.
19. 17ENGKJVCPBut Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.BSBBSB: But Jesus answered them, “To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.”
20. 18ENGKJVCPTherefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.BSBBSB: Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
21. 19ENGKJVCPThen answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.BSBBSB: So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
22. 20ENGKJVCPFor the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.BSBBSB: The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these.
23. 21ENGKJVCPFor as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.BSBBSB: For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes.
24. 22ENGKJVCPFor the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:BSBBSB: Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son,
25. 23ENGKJVCPthat all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.BSBBSB: so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
26. 24ENGKJVCPVerily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.BSBBSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.
27. 25ENGKJVCPVerily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.BSBBSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
28. 26ENGKJVCPFor as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;BSBBSB: For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.
29. 27ENGKJVCPand hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.BSBBSB: And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
30. 28ENGKJVCPMarvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,BSBBSB: Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice
31. 29ENGKJVCPand shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.BSBBSB: and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
32. 30ENGKJVCPI can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.BSBBSB: I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

33. Testimonies about Jesus

34. 31ENGKJVCPIf I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.BSBBSB: If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.
35. 32ENGKJVCPThere is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.BSBBSB: There is another who testifies about Me, and I know that His testimony about Me is valid.

37. 34ENGKJVCPBut I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.BSBBSB: Even though I do not accept human testimony, I say these things so that you may be saved.
38. 35ENGKJVCPHe was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.BSBBSB: John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light.
39. 36ENGKJVCPBut I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.BSBBSB: But I have testimony more substantial than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works I am doing—testify about Me that the Father has sent Me.
40. 37ENGKJVCPAnd the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.BSBBSB: And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form,
41. 38ENGKJVCPAnd ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.BSBBSB: nor does His word abide in you, because you do not believe the One He sent.

42. The Witness of Scripture

    (Luke 16:19–31)

43. 39ENGKJVCPSearch the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.BSBBSB: You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me,

47. 43ENGKJVCPI am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.BSBBSB: I have come in My Father’s name, and you have not received Me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will receive him.
48. 44ENGKJVCPHow can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?BSBBSB: How can you believe if you accept glory from one another, yet do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
49. 45ENGKJVCPDo not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.BSBBSB: Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, in whom you have put your hope.
50. 46ENGKJVCPFor had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.BSBBSB: If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me.
