1. The Israelites Multiply in Egypt

   (Genesis 46:7–27)

2. 1ENGOJBNow these are the Shemot Bnei Yisroel, which came into Mitzrayim; every ish and his bais came with Ya'akov:BSBBSB: These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
3. 2ENGOJBReuven, Shim'on, Levi, and Yehudah,BSBBSB: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
4. 3ENGOJBYissakhar, Zevulun, and Binyamin,BSBBSB: Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
5. 4ENGOJBDan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.BSBBSB: Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.
6. 5ENGOJBAnd all the nefesh that came out of the loins of Ya'akov were seventy nefesh; for Yosef was in Mitzrayim already.BSBBSB: The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all, including Joseph, who was already in Egypt.
7. 6ENGOJBAnd Yosef died, and all his achim, and all that generation.BSBBSB: Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,
8. 7ENGOJBAnd the Bnei Yisroel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and became exceeding strong; and the land was filled with them.BSBBSB: but the Israelites were fruitful and increased rapidly; they multiplied and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them.

9. Oppression by a New King

   (Acts 7:15–19)

10. 8ENGOJBNow there arose a melech chadash over Mitzrayim, which had no da'as of Yosef.BSBBSB: Then a new king, who did not know Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
11. 9ENGOJBAnd he said unto his people, Hinei, the Am Bnei Yisroel are more and stronger than we.BSBBSB: “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become too numerous and too powerful for us.
12. 10ENGOJBCome, let us outsmart them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any milchamah, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.BSBBSB: Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
13. 11ENGOJBTherefore they did set over them sarei missim (taskmasters) to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pitom and Ra'meses.BSBBSB: So the Egyptians appointed taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. As a result, they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.
14. 12ENGOJBBut the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and spread out. And they were in dread because of the Bnei Yisroel.BSBBSB: But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and flourished; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.
15. 13ENGOJBAnd the Egyptians made the Bnei Yisroel to serve with rigor;BSBBSB: They worked the Israelites ruthlessly
16. 14ENGOJBAnd they made their lives bitter with avodah kashah (hard bondage), in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of avodah in the sadeh; all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigor.BSBBSB: and made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar, and with all kinds of work in the fields. Every service they imposed was harsh.
17. 15ENGOJBAnd Melech Mitzrayim spoke to the meyalledot HaIvriyyot (Hebrew midwives), of which the shem of the one was Shiphrah, and of the other Puah;BSBBSB: Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,
18. 16ENGOJBAnd he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to HaIvriyyot (the Hebrew women) and see them upon the delivery stool; if it be a ben, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a bat, then she shall live.BSBBSB: “When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.”
19. 17ENGOJBBut the meyalledot feared HaElohim, and did not as Melech Mitzrayim commanded them, but saved the yeladim alive.BSBBSB: The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had instructed; they let the boys live.
20. 18ENGOJBSo Melech Mitzrayim called for the meyalledot, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the yeladim alive?BSBBSB: So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
21. 19ENGOJBAnd the meyalledot said unto Pharaoh, Because HaIvriyyot are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and are delivered before the meyalledot come in unto them.BSBBSB: The midwives answered Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a midwife arrives.”
22. 20ENGOJBTherefore Elohim dealt well with the meyalledot; and the people multiplied, and grew very strong.BSBBSB: So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became even more numerous.
23. 21ENGOJBAnd it came to pass, because the meyalledot feared HaElohim, that He established them batim.BSBBSB: And because the midwives feared God, He gave them families of their own.
24. 22ENGOJBAnd Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every ben that is born ye shall cast into the Nile, and every bat ye shall save alive.BSBBSB: Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
