1. Judah and Tamar

   (1 Chronicles 2:3–4)

2. 1ENGOJBAnd it came to pass at that time, that Yehudah went down from his achim, and turned in to an ish Adullami shmo Chirah.BSBBSB: About that time, Judah left his brothers and settled near a man named Hirah, an Adullamite.
3. 2ENGOJBAnd Yehudah saw there a bat ish Kena'ani shmo Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.BSBBSB: There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua, and he took her as a wife and slept with her.
4. 3ENGOJBShe conceived, and bore ben; and he called shmo Er.BSBBSB: So she conceived and gave birth to a son, and Judah named him Er.
5. 4ENGOJBAnd she conceived again, and bore ben; and she called shmo Onan.BSBBSB: Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan.
6. 5ENGOJBAnd she yet again conceived, and bore ben; and called shmo Shelah; at Keziv, when she bore him.BSBBSB: Then she gave birth to another son and named him Shelah; it was at Chezib that she gave birth to him.
7. 6ENGOJBAnd Yehudah took a wife for Er his bechor, whose shem was Tamar.BSBBSB: Now Judah acquired a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
8. 7ENGOJBAnd Er, bechor Yehudah, was rah in the eyes of Hashem; and Hashem slaughtered him.BSBBSB: But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; so the LORD put him to death.
9. 8ENGOJBAnd Yehudah said unto Onan, Go in unto eshet achicha, and enter into levirate marriage with her, and raise up zera to achicha.BSBBSB: Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and raise up offspring for your brother.”
10. 9ENGOJBAnd Onan knew that the zera should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto eshet achiv, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give zera to achiv.BSBBSB: But Onan knew that the offspring would not belong to him; so whenever he would sleep with his brother’s wife, he would spill his seed on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother.
11. 10ENGOJBAnd the thing which he did was rah in the eyes of Hashem; therefore He slaughtered him also.BSBBSB: What he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, so He put Onan to death as well.
12. 11ENGOJBThen said Yehudah to Tamar his shnur, Remain an almanah at thy bais avi, till Shelah beni is grown; for he said, Lest he die also, as his achim did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her bais avi.BSBBSB: Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.
13. 12ENGOJBAnd in process of time the bat Shua, eshet Yehudah, died; and Yehudah was consoled, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnah, he and his re'a Chirah the Adullami.BSBBSB: After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah.
14. 13ENGOJBAnd it was told Tamar, saying, Hinei, thy shver (father-in-law) goeth up to Timnah to shear his tzon.BSBBSB: When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,”
15. 14ENGOJBAnd she put off her widowʼs garments from her, and covered her with a tze'if (veil, shleier), and disguised herself, and sat at the entrance of Einayim which is on the derech to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him as isha.BSBBSB: she removed her widow’s garments, covered her face with a veil to disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.
16. 15ENGOJBWhen Yehudah saw her, he thought her to be a zonah; because she had covered her face.BSBBSB: When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face.
17. 16ENGOJBAnd he turned unto her by the derech, and said, Come now, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his shnur daughter-in-law). And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?BSBBSB: Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “What will you give me for sleeping with you?” she inquired.
18. 17ENGOJBAnd he said, I will send thee a gedi izzim (kid of the goats). And she said, Wilt thou give me an eravon (pledge, mashkn), till thou send it?BSBBSB: “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah answered. But she replied, “Only if you leave me something as a pledge until you send it.”
19. 18ENGOJBAnd he said, What eravon shall I give thee? And she said, Thy chotam (signet), and thy signet neck cord, and thy staff that is in thine yad. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.BSBBSB: “What pledge should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your seal and your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.
20. 19ENGOJBAnd she arose, and went away, and took off her tze'if (veil, shleier) from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.BSBBSB: Then Tamar got up and departed. And she removed her veil and put on her widow’s garments again.
21. 20ENGOJBAnd Yehudah sent the gedi izzim by the yad of his friend the Adullami, to get back his eravon (pledge, mashkn) from the yad haisha; but he found her not.BSBBSB: Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
22. 21ENGOJBThen he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the kedesha (cult prostitute) that was on the crossroads by the derech? And they said, There was no kedesha in this place.BSBBSB: He asked the men of that place, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?” “No shrine prostitute has been here,” they answered.
23. 22ENGOJBAnd he returned to Yehudah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said that there was no kedesha in this place.BSBBSB: So Hirah returned to Judah and said, “I could not find her, and furthermore, the men of that place said, ‘No shrine prostitute has been here.’”
24. 23ENGOJBAnd Yehudah said, Let her take for herself, lest we become buz (laughingstock, shpot); hinei, I sent this gedi, and thou hast not found her.BSBBSB: “Let her keep the items,” Judah replied. “Otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you could not find her.”
25. 24ENGOJBAnd it came to pass about shlosh chadashim (three months) later, that it was told Yehudah saying, Tamar thy shnur hath played the zonah; and also, hinei, she is with child by zenunim (whoredom). And Yehudah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burned.BSBBSB: About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has prostituted herself, and now she is pregnant.” “Bring her out!” Judah replied. “Let her be burned to death!”
26. 25ENGOJBWhen she was brought forth, she sent to her shver (father-in-law), saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child; and she said, Discern, now, whose are these, the chotam (signet), and the signet neck cord, and the staff.BSBBSB: As she was being brought out, Tamar sent a message to her father-in-law: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Please examine them. Whose seal and cord and staff are these?”
27. 26ENGOJBAnd Yehudah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more tzadekah than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah beni. And he knew her again no more.BSBBSB: Judah recognized the items and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again.

28. The Birth of Perez and Zerah

29. 27ENGOJBAnd it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, hinei te'omim (twin boys) were in her beten.BSBBSB: When the time came for Tamar to give birth, there were twins in her womb.
30. 28ENGOJBAnd it came to pass, when she travailed in labor, that the one put out his yad; and the midwife took and bound upon his yad a scarlet thread, saying, This came out rishonah (first).BSBBSB: And as she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it around his wrist. “This one came out first,” she announced.
31. 29ENGOJBAnd it came to pass, as he drew back his yad, that, hinei, his brother came out; and she said, How hast paratzta (thou broken out)? This paretz (breach, breaking) be upon thee; therefore shmo was called Peretz Breaking out.BSBBSB: But when he pulled his hand back and his brother came out, she said, “You have broken out first!” So he was named Perez.
32. 30ENGOJBAnd afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his yad; and shmo was called Zerach.BSBBSB: Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread around his wrist, and he was named Zerah.
