1. Habakkuk’s First Complaint

2. 1ENGOJBThe burden which Chabakuk HaNavi did see.BSBBSB: This is the burden that Habakkuk the prophet received in a vision:
3. 2ENGOJBUntil when, Hashem, must I cry for help, and Thou wilt not hear? Even cry out unto Thee: Chamas (violence!), and Thou wilt not save?BSBBSB: How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save?
4. 3ENGOJBWhy dost Thou show me iniquity, and cause me to behold trouble? For plundering and chamas are before me; and there are those that raise up strife and contention.BSBBSB: Why do You make me see iniquity? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me. Strife is ongoing, and conflict abounds.
5. 4ENGOJBTherefore the torah is slacked, and mishpat (judgment) doth never prevail; for the rasha doth hem in the tzadik; therefore mishpat (justice) proceedeth perverted.BSBBSB: Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.

7. 5ENGOJBHashem says: Behold ye the Goyim, and regard, and wonder marvelously; for I will work a work in your yamim which, though it be told you, of it ye will have no emunah (faith).BSBBSB: “Look at the nations and observe—be utterly astounded! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe even if someone told you.
8. 6ENGOJBFor, hineni, I raise up the Kasdim (Chaldeans), that Goy bitter and impetuous, which shall march far and wide over the earth, to confiscate the mishkanot (dwelling places) that are not their own.BSBBSB: For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans—that ruthless and impetuous nation which marches through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own.
9. 7ENGOJBThey are terrible and dreadful; their mishpat and their dignity shall proceed from themselves.BSBBSB: They are dreaded and feared; from themselves they derive justice and sovereignty.
10. 8ENGOJBTheir susim also are swifter than the leopards, keener than the evening wolves; and their parash (cavalry) shall charge ahead, and their parash shall come from afar; they shall fly as the nesher (eagle), swooping to devour.BSBBSB: Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves of the night. Their horsemen charge ahead, and their cavalry comes from afar. They fly like a vulture, swooping down to devour.
11. 9ENGOJBThey shall come all for chamas; the swarm of their faces is directed forward, and they shall gather captives as the sand.BSBBSB: All of them come bent on violence; their hordes advance like the east wind; they gather prisoners like sand.
12. 10ENGOJBAnd they shall scoff at the melachim, and the roznim (dignitaries) shall be a scorn unto them; they shall laugh at every stronghold; for they shall heap dirt (earthen ramps), and take it.BSBBSB: They scoff at kings and make rulers an object of scorn. They laugh at every fortress and build up siege ramps to seize it.
13. 11ENGOJBThen they sweep on like the ruach (wind), guilty men whose g-d is his own koach.BSBBSB: Then they sweep by like the wind and pass through. They are guilty; their own strength is their god.”

14. Habakkuk’s Second Complaint

    (Psalm 11:1–7)

15. 12ENGOJBArt thou not mikedem (from everlasting), Hashem Elohai (my G-d), Kedoshi (my Holy One)? We shall not die. Hashem, Thou hast appointed them for mishpat; O Tzur, Thou hast ordained them for reproof.BSBBSB: Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. O LORD, You have appointed them to execute judgment; O Rock, You have established them for correction.
16. 13ENGOJBThou art of eyes of tehor (pureness), not to behold rah, and canst not look on wickedness; why lookest Thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest Thy tongue when the rasha devoureth the tzaddik, the man that is more righteous than he?BSBBSB: Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
17. 14ENGOJBAnd makest adam as the dagim of the yam, as the creeping things, that have no moshel over them?BSBBSB: You have made men like the fish of the sea, like creeping things that have no ruler.
18. 15ENGOJBThey take up all of them with a khakkah (hook), they catch them in their net, and gather them in their dragnet; therefore they have simcha (joy) and are glad.BSBBSB: The foe pulls all of them up with a hook; he catches them in his dragnet, and gathers them in his fishing net; so he rejoices gladly.
19. 16ENGOJBTherefore they make zevakhim (sacrifices) unto their net, and burn incense unto their dragnet; because by them their portion is sumptuous, and their food plenteous.BSBBSB: Therefore he sacrifices to his dragnet and burns incense to his fishing net, for by these things his portion is sumptuous and his food is rich.
20. 17ENGOJBShall they therefore empty their net, and without mercy continually slay the Goyim?BSBBSB: Will he, therefore, empty his net and continue to slay nations without mercy?
