1. Water from the Rock

   (Exodus 17:1–7)

Miriam died there, and was buried there.BSBBSB: In the first month, the whole congregation of Israel entered the Wilderness of Zin and stayed in Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
3. 2ENGWMBBThere was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.BSBBSB: Now there was no water for the congregation, so they gathered against Moses and Aaron.
4. 3ENGWMBBThe people quarrelled with Moses, and spoke, saying, “We wish that we had died when our brothers died before the LORD!BSBBSB: The people quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had perished with our brothers before the LORD!
5. 4ENGWMBBWhy have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals?BSBBSB: Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here?
6. 5ENGWMBBWhy have you made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in to this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.”BSBBSB: Why have you led us up out of Egypt to bring us to this wretched place? It is not a place of grain, figs, vines, or pomegranates—and there is no water to drink!”
7. 6ENGWMBBMoses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces. The LORD’s glory appeared to them.BSBBSB: Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. They fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.
8. 7ENGWMBBThe LORD spoke to Moses, saying,BSBBSB: And the LORD said to Moses,
9. 8ENGWMBB“Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it pour out its water. You shall bring water to them out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink.”BSBBSB: “Take the staff and assemble the congregation. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will pour out its water. You will bring out water from the rock and provide drink for the congregation and their livestock.”
10. 9ENGWMBBMoses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.BSBBSB: So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he had been commanded.
11. 10ENGWMBBMoses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?”BSBBSB: Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Listen now, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”
12. 11ENGWMBBMoses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice, and water came out abundantly. The congregation and their livestock drank.BSBBSB: Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that a great amount of water gushed out, and the congregation and their livestock were able to drink.
13. 12ENGWMBBThe LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”BSBBSB: But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust Me to show My holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”
14. 13ENGWMBBThese are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.BSBBSB: These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and He showed His holiness among them.

15. Edom Refuses Passage

16. 14ENGWMBBMoses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “Your brother Israel says: You know all the travail that has happened to us;BSBBSB: From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to tell the king of Edom, “This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardship that has befallen us,
17. 15ENGWMBBhow our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers.BSBBSB: how our fathers went down to Egypt, where we lived many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers,
18. 16ENGWMBBWhen we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border.BSBBSB: and when we cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Now look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.
19. 17ENGWMBB“Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink from the water of the wells. We will go along the king’s highway. We will not turn away to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border.”BSBBSB: Please let us pass through your land. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will stay on the King’s Highway; we will not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”
20. 18ENGWMBBEdom said to him, “You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.”BSBBSB: But Edom answered, “You may not travel through our land, or we will come out and confront you with the sword.”
21. 19ENGWMBBThe children of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway; and if we drink your water, I and my livestock, then I will give its price. Only let me, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet.”BSBBSB: “We will stay on the main road,” the Israelites replied, “and if we or our herds drink your water, we will pay for it. There will be no problem; only let us pass through on foot.”
22. 20ENGWMBBHe said, “You shall not pass through.” Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.BSBBSB: But Edom insisted, “You may not pass through.” And they came out to confront the Israelites with a large army and a strong hand.
23. 21ENGWMBBThus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border, so Israel turned away from him.BSBBSB: So Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through their territory, and Israel turned away from them.
