Greetings from Paul and Timothy (Philippians 1:1–2; Philemon 1:1–3)
UDB I, Paul, write this to the dear fellow believers in the city of Colossae. This is from Paul, whom God chose to send to you as an apostle of Christ Jesus, and this letter is also from Timothy, our fellow believer joined to Christ. We are sending this letter to all of you. BSB BSB: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
UDB We send this letter to those God has set apart for himself—those who are faithful believers who belong to Christ. We pray that God our Father will give you his kindness and peace. BSB BSB: To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace and peace to you from God our Father.
Thanksgiving and Prayer (1 Corinthians 1:4–9; Philippians 1:3–11)
UDB We often thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, while we are praying for you. BSB BSB: We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,
UDB We give God thanks because we have heard that you trust in Christ Jesus and that you love all those whom God has set apart for himself. BSB BSB: because we have heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all the saints—
UDB You love our fellow believers because you confidently are waiting for the things God is reserving for you in heaven. You first heard about these things when you heard the true message, the good news about Christ. BSB BSB: the faith and love proceeding from the hope stored up for you in heaven, of which you have already heard in the word of truth, the gospel
UDB Believers are proclaiming this good news that you heard in Colossae to everyone in the world. It is just as it has worked in you also, from the first day you heard it and understood how truly kind God is. The good news is like a field planted with crops that are growing and will give a very large harvest. BSB BSB: that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood the grace of God.
UDB Epaphras taught you the good news. We love him because he serves Christ together with us and works for Christ faithfully in our place. BSB BSB: You learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,
UDB He told us that you love all God's people because God's Spirit has empowered you to love God and others. BSB BSB: and who also informed us of your love in the Spirit.
UDB Since the time we heard about how you love, we have always been praying for you. We ask God to show you everything he wants you to do and to make you wise so that you will understand what God's Spirit is teaching you. BSB BSB: For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
UDB We pray that you will live in a way that will help others honor the Lord also, so that he will approve of you. We pray that you will grow to understand God more and do every good thing that he tells you to do. BSB BSB: so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
UDB We pray that God will strengthen you with all his mighty power so that you will patiently endure every difficulty. We pray that you will rejoice BSB BSB: being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have full endurance and patience, and joyfully
UDB and thank God our Father, because he has declared you worthy to be with the others whom he has set apart for himself; this is so he can give you all the things that he is keeping for you when you are with him in the light of his presence. BSB BSB: giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.
UDB God our Father has rescued us from the evil power of Satan and has brought us into the kingdom of his dear Son. BSB BSB: He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son,
UDB The Son has set us free from that evil, and when he set us free he also forgave our sins. BSB BSB: in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The Supremacy of the Son (Hebrews 1:1–14)
UDB He is the head of his body, which is the church—like a person's head rules over every part of the body. He was the first person to come back to life with a perfect body, and so he has the highest honor of all. BSB BSB: And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence.
UDB God the Father was pleased to make his full nature live in Christ. BSB BSB: For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him,
UDB Before you believed in Christ, God considered you his enemies, and you were unfriendly to God because you thought evil thoughts and because you did evil deeds. BSB BSB: Once you were alienated from God and were hostile in your minds, engaging in evil deeds.
UDB But you must continue to trust Christ completely. If you do, you will be like a house that they built on solid rock. You must not allow yourselves to be shaken from the hope you had when you first heard the good news. I, Paul, have become a servant of this good news that is being proclaimed to everyone on the earth. BSB BSB: if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope of the gospel you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
Paul’s Suffering for the Church (2 Corinthians 11:16–33)
UDB Now I rejoice that I am suffering for your benefit. Yes, in order to help the church, which is like Christ's body, I suffer things that must still happen. BSB BSB: Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His body, which is the church.
UDB God made me his servant and gave to me special work to do, which is to proclaim the full message of God to you. BSB BSB: I became its servant by the commission God gave me to fully proclaim to you the word of God,
UDB From ancient times, for generations, God did not tell this good news, but now he has revealed this mystery to those whom he has set apart for himself. BSB BSB: the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations but is now revealed to His saints.
UDB It is to people like yourselves that God planned to tell this wonderful secret. And the secret is that Christ will live in you and that you can confidently expect to share in God's glory! BSB BSB: To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
UDB We are wisely warning and teaching every person about Christ so that we might bring into God's presence each one as knowing God completely, joined to Christ. BSB BSB: We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
UDB To do this, I work my hardest because Christ is giving me strength. BSB BSB: To this end I also labor, striving with all His energy working powerfully within me.
