1. The Israelites Multiply in Egypt

   (Genesis 46:7–27)

2. 1UDBThese were the sons of Jacob (they all went to the land of Egypt with their father Jacob and with their own households). The sons' names were:BSBBSB: These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
3. 2UDBReuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,BSBBSB: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
4. 3UDBIssachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,BSBBSB: Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
5. 4UDBDan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.BSBBSB: Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.
6. 5UDBIn all, there were seventy people who went with Jacob. His son Joseph was already in Egypt.BSBBSB: The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all, including Joseph, who was already in Egypt.
7. 6UDBAfter some time, Joseph and his brothers and everyone else in their family who lived in that generation died.BSBBSB: Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,
8. 7UDBBut Jacob's descendants gave birth to many children. The number of his descendants grew very large. As a result, there were so many of them that they were everywhere in Egypt.BSBBSB: but the Israelites were fruitful and increased rapidly; they multiplied and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them.

9. Oppression by a New King

   (Acts 7:15–19)

10. 8UDBHowever, many years later, a new king began to rule in Egypt. He did not know about all the good things Joseph had done for the people of Egypt long ago.BSBBSB: Then a new king, who did not know Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
11. 9UDBHe said to his people, "Look at what has happened! The Israelite people have become so many and so powerful that they are dangerous to us!BSBBSB: “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become too numerous and too powerful for us.
12. 10UDBWe must find a way to control them! If we do not do that, there will be more of them. Then, if enemies attack us, the Israelites will join with our enemies and fight against us, and they will escape from our land."BSBBSB: Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
13. 11UDBSo the king and his leaders put masters over the Israelites to cause them to suffer very much by making them work very hard. They made the Israelite people build two cities to store goods for the king. Those cities were named Pithom and Rameses.BSBBSB: So the Egyptians appointed taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. As a result, they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.
14. 12UDBBut the more they treated the Israelite people badly, the more the number of Israelites grew, and they became so many that they filled the land. So the Egyptian people began to fear the Israelite people.BSBBSB: But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and flourished; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.
15. 13UDBThey made the Israelite people work very hard.BSBBSB: They worked the Israelites ruthlessly
16. 14UDBBecause the Israelites were slaves, their lives were very sad. They had to build many buildings with cement and bricks. They also had to do work in the fields. In making the Israelites do all this work, the Egyptian masters treated them very badly.BSBBSB: and made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar, and with all kinds of work in the fields. Every service they imposed was harsh.
17. 15UDBNow there were two Hebrew midwives. Their names were Shiphrah and Puah. The king of Egypt said to those two women,BSBBSB: Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,
18. 16UDB"When you help the Hebrew women give birth to their children, if the baby is a boy, you must kill him. If the baby is a girl, you may let her live."BSBBSB: “When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.”
19. 17UDBBut the midwives feared that God would punish them if they obeyed the king. So they did not do what the king told them to do. They allowed the baby boys to live.BSBBSB: The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had instructed; they let the boys live.
20. 18UDBSo the king called the two midwives and said to them, "Why are you doing this? Why are you letting the baby boys live?"BSBBSB: So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
21. 19UDBOne of the midwives said to the king, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. The Hebrew women are very strong. They give birth to their babies before we can get to them to help them."BSBBSB: The midwives answered Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a midwife arrives.”
22. 20UDBSo God acted kindly toward the midwives, and the Hebrew people became very numerous and strong.BSBBSB: So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became even more numerous.
23. 21UDBBecause the midwives feared God, God gave them children of their own.BSBBSB: And because the midwives feared God, He gave them families of their own.
24. 22UDBThen the king commanded all the Egyptian people, saying, "You must throw into the Nile River every Hebrew baby boy that is born! However, you can allow the baby girls to live."BSBBSB: Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
