Ezekiel Eats the Scroll (Revelation 10:1–11)
UDB He said to me, "Son of Man, eat this scroll that is in front of you. Then go and speak to the Israelite people." BSB BSB: “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here. Eat this scroll, then go and speak to the house of Israel.”
UDB So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat it. BSB BSB: So I opened my mouth, and He fed me the scroll.
UDB Then he said to me, "Son of Man, eat the scroll that I have given to you. Fill your stomach with it." So I ate it, and in my mouth it tasted as sweet as honey. BSB BSB: “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat and fill your stomach with this scroll I am giving you.” So I ate, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.
UDB Then he said to me, "Son of Man, go to the Israelite people and tell them my message. BSB BSB: Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now to the house of Israel and speak My words to them.
UDB The people to whom I am sending you are not people whose language is very difficult to learn, a language which you do not understand. I am sending you to your Israelite people. BSB BSB: For you are not being sent to a people of unfamiliar speech or difficult language, but to the house of Israel—
UDB I am sending you to people whose language you understand very well. If I were sending you to people whose language was difficult for you to understand, they would pay attention to what you say to them. BSB BSB: not to the many peoples of unfamiliar speech and difficult language whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.
UDB But because the Israelite people do not want to listen to me, they will not want to listen to you. They do not want to listen because they are all very rebellious. BSB BSB: But the house of Israel will be unwilling to listen to you, since they are unwilling to listen to Me. For the whole house of Israel is hard-headed and hard-hearted.
UDB But you—I will enable you to be as stubborn and tough as they are. BSB BSB: Behold, I will make your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.
UDB I will cause you to be as firm as the hardest stone, like flint. So, even though they are very rebellious people, do not be afraid of them; do not allow them to frighten you." BSB BSB: I will make your forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. Do not be afraid of them or dismayed at their presence, even though they are a rebellious house.”
UDB He also said to me, "Son of Man, listen very carefully to what I say, and keep thinking about it. BSB BSB: “Son of man,” He added, “listen carefully to all the words I speak to you, and take them to heart.
UDB Go to your fellow Israelites who are here after being exiled, and speak to them. Say to them, 'This is what Yahweh the Lord says' and then tell them my message, whether they want to hear it or whether they would rather cease to exist." BSB BSB: Go to your people, the exiles; speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says,’ whether they listen or refuse to listen.”
UDB Then in the vision the Spirit of God lifted me up, and I heard behind me the sound of a large earthquake. (Praise our glorious Yahweh in the place where he lives in heaven!) BSB BSB: Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me: “Blessed be the glory of the LORD in His dwelling place!”
UDB I heard the sound of the wings of the four living creatures brushing against each other, and I also heard the sound of the wheels that were beside them. It was a loud sound like an earthquake. BSB BSB: It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures brushing against one another and the sound of the wheels beside them, a great rumbling sound.
UDB The Spirit took me away. Within me I was very bitter and angry, and I felt unable to do anything, as though Yahweh were pushing down on me very powerfully. BSB BSB: So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the LORD upon me.
UDB I came to the exiles who lived at the town of Tel Aviv near the Kebar Canal in Babylon. Then, where they were living, I sat for seven days. I was shocked about everything that I had seen. BSB BSB: I came to the exiles at Tel-abib who dwelt by the River Kebar. And for seven days I sat where they sat and remained there among them, overwhelmed.
A Watchman for Israel 16 UDB After those seven days had ended, Yahweh gave me this message: BSB BSB: At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
UDB "Son of Man, I am appointing you to be like a watchman. So listen to these messages that I will give you, and tell them those messages to warn them. BSB BSB: “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from My mouth, give them a warning from Me.
UDB When I say about some wicked people, 'They will surely die because of their sins,' if you do not warn them or tell them that they must turn from their wicked behavior if they want to save their lives, they will die because of their sin, and it will be your responsibility since you did not act to prevent it. BSB BSB: If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ but you do not warn him or speak out to warn him from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, and I will hold you responsible for his blood.
UDB But if you warn wicked people and they do not turn from all their wicked behavior, they will die because of their sins, but you will have saved yourself from my punishment. BSB BSB: But if you warn a wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness and his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved yourself.
UDB Similarly, when righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and do evil deeds, and I cause bad things to happen to them, they will die. But you must warn them. If they do not stop their sinful behavior, they will die because of their sins. I will not think about the righteous things that they did previously. But if you have not warned them, I will hold you responsible for their deaths. BSB BSB: Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will hold you responsible for his blood.
UDB But if you warn righteous people not to sin, and they do not sin; they will surely remain alive because they heeded your warning, and you will have saved yourself from my punishment." BSB BSB: But if you warn the righteous man not to sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he heeded your warning, and you will have saved yourself.”
UDB I felt Yahweh take control, and he spoke to me and said, "Get up and go to the plain, and I will speak to you there." BSB BSB: And there the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He said to me, “Get up, go out to the plain, and there I will speak with you.”
UDB So I got up and went out to the plain. And I saw the glory of Yahweh there, like the glory that I had seen along the Kebar Canal. And I threw myself flat onto the ground. BSB BSB: So I got up and went out to the plain, and behold, the glory of the LORD was present there, like the glory I had seen by the River Kebar, and I fell facedown.
UDB Then the Spirit of God entered me and enabled me to stand up. He said to me, "Go into your house and stay inside it. BSB BSB: Then the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet. He spoke with me and said, “Go, shut yourself inside your house.
UDB People will tie you with ropes, with the result that you will be unable to go out among the people. BSB BSB: And you, son of man, they will tie with ropes, and you will be bound so that you cannot go out among the people.
UDB Even though they are very rebellious people, I will cause your tongue to stick to the roof of your mouth, with the result that you will be unable to talk and to rebuke them. BSB BSB: I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, and you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, though they are a rebellious house.
UDB But then when I speak to you again, I will enable you to talk and tell them 'This is what the Lord Yahweh is saying to you.' The one who wants to hear me will hear me, but the one who ignores the message will come to an end, since they are a rebellious people!" BSB BSB: But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you are to tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says.’ Whoever listens, let him listen; and whoever refuses, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.
