The Tower of Babel (Deuteronomy 32:8; Acts 2:1–13)
UDB At this time, all the people in the world spoke the same language. BSB BSB: Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech.
UDB As people moved around in the east, they arrived at a plain in the region of Babylon and began to live there. BSB BSB: And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
UDB Then they said to each other, "Let us make bricks and bake them to make them hard, for building!" So they used bricks instead of stones, and used tar instead of mortar to hold them together. BSB BSB: And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.
UDB They said, "Let us build a city for ourselves! We also ought to build a very high tower that reaches up to the sky! In that way people will know who we are! If we do not do this, we will be scattered all over the earth!" BSB BSB: “Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
UDB One day Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower that the people were building. BSB BSB: Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
UDB Yahweh said, "These people are one group that all speak the same language. If they have begun to do this, then there is nothing that they will decide to do that will be impossible for them! BSB BSB: And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they devise will be beyond them.
UDB So, let us go down there and make the people speak different languages, so that they will not be able to understand what each other is saying." BSB BSB: Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
UDB By doing this, Yahweh caused them to scatter all over the earth, and the people stopped building the city. BSB BSB: So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
UDB The city was called Babel because there Yahweh caused the people all over the earth to no longer speak only one language. And Yahweh caused them to scatter all over the earth from that place. BSB BSB: That is why it is called Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
