The Covenant of the Rainbow 1 UDB Then God blessed Noah and his sons. He said to them, "I want you to have many children who will live all over the earth. BSB BSB: And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
UDB All the larger animals on the earth, all the birds, all the creatures that move close to the ground, and all the fish, will be very afraid of you. I place them under your authority. BSB BSB: The fear and dread of you will fall on every living creature on the earth, every bird of the air, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are delivered into your hand.
UDB Previously I allowed you to eat green plants for food, but now you may eat everything that lives and moves. BSB BSB: Everything that lives and moves will be food for you; just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you all things.
UDB But you must not eat meat that still has the blood in it because the life is in its blood. BSB BSB: But you must not eat meat with its lifeblood still in it.
UDB I punish any creature who kills a human being—that they answer to Yahweh—whether it be an animal or from a human being. I demand that murderers must suffer for their crimes and pay with their own lives. Even when an animal kills a person, that animal must also have their life taken because they have taken the life of a human being. BSB BSB: And surely I will require the life of any man or beast by whose hand your lifeblood is shed. I will demand an accounting from anyone who takes the life of his fellow man:
UDB For I made people to be like myself. So I insist that if someone murders another human being, another person must kill him. Anyone who pours another's blood out must himself lose his own blood. BSB BSB: Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man his blood will be shed; for in His own image God has made mankind.
UDB As for you, I want you to produce many children, in order that they and their descendants may live all over the earth." BSB BSB: But as for you, be fruitful and multiply; spread out across the earth and multiply upon it.”
UDB "Listen carefully. I am now making a covenant with you and with your descendants, BSB BSB: “Behold, I now establish My covenant with you and your descendants after you,
UDB and with every creature with you that is alive—including the birds, the domestic animals, and the wild animals—every living animal creature on the earth that came out of the boat with you. BSB BSB: and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth—every living thing that came out of the ark.
UDB This is the covenant that I am making with you: I will never again destroy all living beings by a flood, or destroy everything else on the earth by a flood." BSB BSB: And I establish My covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
UDB Then God said to him, "This is the sign to guarantee that I will keep the covenant that I am making with you and with all living beings, a covenant that I will keep forever: BSB BSB: And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:
UDB From time to time I will put a rainbow in the sky. It will be the sign of my covenant with you and with everything on the earth. BSB BSB: I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
UDB When I cause rain to fall from the clouds, and a rainbow appears in the sky, BSB BSB: Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,
UDB it will remind me about the covenant that I have made with you and with all living creatures, my promise that there will never again be a flood that will destroy all living creatures. BSB BSB: I will remember My covenant between Me and you and every living creature of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.
UDB Whenever there is a rainbow in the sky, I will see it, and I will think about the covenant that I have made with every living being that is upon the earth, a promise that I will keep forever." BSB BSB: And whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of every kind that is on the earth.”
UDB Then God said to Noah, "The rainbow will be the sign of the covenant that I have made with all living beings on the earth." BSB BSB: So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between Me and every creature on the earth.”
Noah’s Shame and Canaan’s Curse 18 UDB The sons of Noah who came out of boat were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham later became the father of Canaan. BSB BSB: The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Ham was the father of Canaan.
UDB All the people on the earth are descended from these three sons of Noah. BSB BSB: These three were the sons of Noah, and from them the whole earth was populated.
UDB After they produced grapes, he made wine from them. One day, when he had drunk too much of the wine, he became drunk, and he lay naked in his tent. BSB BSB: But when he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and uncovered himself inside his tent.
UDB Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father lying naked in the tent. So he went outside and told his two older brothers what he had seen. BSB BSB: And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers outside.
UDB Then Shem and Japheth took a large cloth and placed it across their backs, and walked backwards into the tent. They covered their father's naked body with the cloth. Their faces were turned away from their father, so they did not see him naked. BSB BSB: Then Shem and Japheth took a garment and placed it across their shoulders, and walking backward, they covered their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned away so that they did not see their father’s nakedness.
UDB When Noah woke up and was sober again, he found out how badly Ham, his youngest son, had behaved toward him. BSB BSB: When Noah awoke from his drunkenness and learned what his youngest son had done to him,
UDB He said, "I am cursing Ham's son, Canaan, and his descendants. They will be like slaves to their uncles. BSB BSB: he said, “Cursed be Canaan! A servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
Shem’s Blessing and Noah’s Death 26 UDB I praise Yahweh, whom Shem worships. May Canaan's descendants be servants to Shem's descendants. BSB BSB: He also declared: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the servant of Shem.
UDB But may God make Japheth's territory larger. May he allow Japheth's descendants to live peacefully among the descendants of Shem. May Canaan's descendants be their slaves." BSB BSB: May God expand the territory of Japheth; may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant.”
UDB Noah lived 350 more years after the flood. BSB BSB: After the flood, Noah lived 350 years.
UDB He died when he was 950 years old. BSB BSB: So Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.
