Job Prepares for Death 1 UDB "My time to live is almost ended; I have no strength left; those who have dug my grave are waiting for me. BSB BSB: “My spirit is broken; my days are extinguished; the grave awaits me.
UDB Those who are around me are making fun of me; I must always see them mocking me." BSB BSB: Surely mockers surround me, and my eyes must gaze at their rebellion.
UDB "God, it is as though I were in prison; please pay the money in order that I may be released, because there is certainly no one else who will help me. BSB BSB: Give me, I pray, the pledge You demand. Who else will be my guarantor?
UDB You have prevented my friends from understanding what is true about me, but you will not allow them to triumph over me, saying that I have done wrong things. BSB BSB: You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore You will not exalt them.
UDB Our ancestors said, 'It often happens that when someone betrays his friends in order to get some of their property, it is that person's children who will be punished for it;' so I desire that will be true of these friends of mine who are lying about me. BSB BSB: If a man denounces his friends for a price, the eyes of his children will fail.
UDB But now people use that saying of our ancestors when they talk about me; they spit to insult me. BSB BSB: He has made me a byword among the people, a man in whose face they spit.
UDB My eyes have become dim because I am very sad, and my arms and legs are as thin as shadows. BSB BSB: My eyes have grown dim with grief, and my whole body is but a shadow.
UDB People who are truly righteous will be shocked when they see what has happened to me; they will be angry at those who refuse to honor God. BSB BSB: The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent are stirred against the godless.
UDB Those who are truly righteous will continue to do what is right, and those who live righteously will continue to become stronger. BSB BSB: Yet a righteous one holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger.
UDB But all you friends of mine, I do not find even one among you who is wise. BSB BSB: But come back and try again, all of you. For I will not find a wise man among you.
UDB My time to live is almost ended; I have not been able to do the things that I planned to do. As for the things I have most desired, there is no hope of them happening. BSB BSB: My days have passed; my plans are broken off—even the desires of my heart.
UDB My friends do not know when it is night and when it is day; when it is night, they claim that it is daylight; when it is becoming dark, they claim that it is getting light. BSB BSB: They have turned night into day, making light seem near in the face of darkness.
UDB I know that my home will be the place where dead people are, where I will sleep in the darkness. BSB BSB: If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in darkness,
UDB I can say to the grave, 'Where I am buried, that place will be like a father to me.' I can say to the maggots, 'You will be like a mother or younger sisters to me because that is where I will always be.' BSB BSB: and say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’
UDB There is certainly no more hope left for me. No one expects that I will have any more happiness. BSB BSB: where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me?
UDB After I descend to the place where the dead are, I will not be able to expect anything good there. I and the things I hope for will go down together into the soil." BSB BSB: Will it go down to the gates of Sheol? Will we go down together into the dust?”
