The Soldiers Mock Jesus (Isaiah 50:4–11; Matthew 27:27–31; Mark 15:16–20; Luke 22:63–65)
UDB Then Pilate sent for Jesus. He had his soldiers beat him severely using whips. BSB BSB: Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.
UDB The soldiers also twisted together a crown and they put it on his head. They also put a purple robe on him. BSB BSB: The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, set it on His head, and dressed Him in a purple robe.
UDB They mocked him and said, "Greetings, King of the Jews!" and they struck him over and over again. BSB BSB: And they went up to Him again and again, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapping Him in the face.
UDB Pilate came outside again and said to the people, "Look, I am bringing him out to you so that you can know that I find no reason to punish him." BSB BSB: Once again Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing Him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against Him.”
UDB So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Look, here is the man!" BSB BSB: When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
UDB When the chief priests and temple guards saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him! As for me, I find no reason to punish him." BSB BSB: As soon as the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” “You take Him and crucify Him,” Pilate replied, “for I find no basis for a charge against Him.”
UDB The Jewish leaders replied to Pilate, "We have a certain law that says he ought to die because he claimed to be the Son of God." BSB BSB: “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.”
UDB When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid. BSB BSB: When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid,
UDB He entered his headquarters once more and called the soldiers to bring Jesus back inside. Then he said to Jesus, "From where do you come?" However, Jesus gave him no answer. BSB BSB: and he went back into the Praetorium. “Where are You from?” he asked. But Jesus gave no answer.
UDB So Pilate said to him, "Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I also have authority to crucify you?" BSB BSB: So Pilate said to Him, “Do You refuse to speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?”
UDB Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority over me at all, if God had not given it to you. So the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a worse sin." BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed Me over to you is guilty of greater sin.”
UDB From that moment on, Pilate kept trying to release Jesus. However, the Jewish leaders cried out, "If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar! Anyone who makes himself a king stands opposed to Caesar." BSB BSB: From then on, Pilate tried to release Him, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who declares himself a king is defying Caesar.”
UDB When Pilate heard that, he brought Jesus out. Then Pilate sat down before him in the judgment seat, the place where he usually pronounced verdicts. This was called "The Stone Pavement," and in the Hebrew language it was "Gabbatha." BSB BSB: When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, which in Hebrew is Gabbatha.
UDB Now it was the day before the Passover Festival, the day of preparation. It was almost noontime when Pilate said to the Jews, "See, here is your king!" BSB BSB: It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about the sixth hour. And Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your King!”
UDB They shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Should I crucify your king?" The chief priests replied, "We have no king but Caesar!" BSB BSB: At this, they shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” “Shall I crucify your King?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” replied the chief priests.
The Crucifixion (Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:32–44; Mark 15:21–32; Luke 23:26–43)
UDB So Pilate handed Jesus over to them, and they took him away. BSB BSB: Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified, and the soldiers took Him away.
UDB He went out, carrying his own cross by himself to the place called "The Place of a Skull," which in the Hebrew language is called "Golgotha." BSB BSB: Carrying His own cross, He went out to The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
UDB Pilate also told someone to write on a board a notice and fasten it to Jesus's cross. It read, 'Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.' BSB BSB: Pilate also had a notice posted on the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
UDB The chief priests went back to Pilate and said, "You should not have written, 'King of the Jews,' but rather, 'This man said, "I am King of the Jews."'" BSB BSB: So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but only that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”
UDB Pilate replied, "You must leave the sign exactly as I have written it." BSB BSB: Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
UDB After the soldiers had put Jesus on the cross, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier. However, they kept his tunic separate. This tunic had been woven from top to bottom from one piece of cloth. BSB BSB: When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments into four parts, one for each soldier, with the tunic remaining. It was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
UDB So they said to each other, "Let us not tear it. Instead, let us decide who will keep it as one piece by casting lots for the one who will get it." This happened to make come true the scripture that said, "They divided my clothes among them. They cast lots for my clothing." BSB BSB: So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.” So that is what the soldiers did.
UDB And he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother!" So from that very moment, that disciple took her to live in his home. BSB BSB: Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.

UDB A little later, Jesus knew that everything that God sent him to do had now been done, and in order to make come true one final thing that the scriptures had foretold, he said, "I am thirsty!" BSB BSB: After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
UDB A jar of sour wine stood there, so they took a short branch from a hyssop plant and put a sponge on it, and they dipped in the sour wine and held it up to Jesus's mouth. BSB BSB: A jar of sour wine was sitting there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth.
UDB After Jesus drank the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and died. BSB BSB: When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.
Jesus’ Side Is Pierced (Zechariah 12:10–14)
UDB This was the day of preparation for the Passover (and the next day was a very special Sabbath). It was against the law to allow dead bodies to remain on the crosses on the Sabbath, so they went to Pilate and asked him to break the legs of the three men so that the men would die quickly and their bodies would be taken down. BSB BSB: It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. In order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.
UDB When they came to Jesus, they saw he was dead already. So they did not break his legs. BSB BSB: But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
UDB Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus's side with a spear, and right away blood and water poured out of his body. BSB BSB: Instead, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
UDB The one who saw this bears witness—his testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth—so that you may put your trust in Jesus. BSB BSB: The one who saw it has testified to this, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
UDB These things happened in order to fulfill what was written in scripture: "No one will break any of his bones." BSB BSB: Now these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken.”
UDB And they fulfilled another scripture that read: 'They will look on the one whom they have pierced.' BSB BSB: And, as another Scripture says: “They will look on the One they have pierced.”
The Burial of Jesus (Isaiah 53:9–12; Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; Luke 23:50–56)
UDB After these things Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus but a secret disciple because he was afraid of the Jews, went to Pilate and asked him if he might take away Jesus's body. Pilate gave Joseph permission, so he came and took away the body of Jesus. BSB BSB: Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body.
UDB Nicodemus, who had once come to Jesus at night, also came and brought with him a mixture of myrrh and aloe spices to prepare the body for burial. The spices weighed about 33 kilograms. BSB BSB: Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
UDB They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in strips of linen cloth, and they packed the wrappings full with all the spices. BSB BSB: So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.
UDB The Passover was about to begin that evening, and they chose the tomb where they would bury Jesus because it was close at hand. That is where they laid the body of Jesus. BSB BSB: And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
