Unlawful Sexual Relations (Matthew 5:27–30)
1 UDB Yahweh also said to Moses, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 UDB "Speak to the Israelite people and tell them that I, Yahweh, say this, 'I am Yahweh, your God. BSB BSB: “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD your God.
3 UDB After seeing how the Egyptians behaved, among whom you also lived, you must not do what they did. And you must not behave as the Canaanites live, into whose land I am taking you. You must avoid their practices. BSB BSB: You must not follow the practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not follow the practices of the land of Canaan, into which I am bringing you. You must not walk in their customs.
4 UDB You must obey all of my laws; you must do everything that I, Yahweh your God, am commanding you. BSB BSB: You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes by walking in them. I am the LORD your God.
5 UDB If you obey all my decrees and laws, you will continue to remain alive for a long time. I, Yahweh, am promising you this. Here are some of my laws. BSB BSB: Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who does these things will live by them. I am the LORD.
7 UDB Do not disgrace your father by sleeping with your mother. Do not disgrace your mother in this manner. BSB BSB: You must not expose the nakedness of your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her.
8 UDB Do not sleep with any of your father's other wives, because that would disgrace your father. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; it would dishonor your father.
9 UDB Do not sleep with either your full sister or half-sister. It does not matter whether she was born and raised in your house or somewhere else. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.
10 UDB Do not sleep with your granddaughter, because that would disgrace you. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for that would shame your family.
11 UDB Do not sleep with your half-sister, one whose father is also your father; she is your sister. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.
12 UDB Do not sleep with your father's sister, because she is your father's close relative. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.
13 UDB Do not sleep with your mother's sister, because she is your mother's close relative. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s close relative.
14 UDB Do not disgrace your father's brother by sleeping with his wife, because she is your aunt. BSB BSB: You must not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations with her; she is your aunt.
15 UDB Do not sleep with your daughter-in-law, because she is your son's wife. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you are not to have sexual relations with her.
16 UDB Do not sleep with your brother's wife, because that would disgrace your brother. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would shame your brother.
17 UDB Do not sleep with the daughter or granddaughter of any woman with whom you have previously slept. They are her close relatives. Sleeping with any of them would be an evil thing to do. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. You are not to marry her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter and have sexual relations with her. They are close relatives; it is depraved.
18 UDB While your wife is still living, do not marry your wife's sister and sleep with her. BSB BSB: You must not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is still alive.
19 UDB Do not sleep with any woman while she is having her menstrual period. BSB BSB: You must not approach a woman to have sexual relations with her during her menstrual period.
20 UDB Do not defile yourself by sleeping with someone else's wife. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife and thus defile yourself with her.
22 UDB No man should sleep with another man. That is detestable. BSB BSB: You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination.
23 UDB No one, man or woman, should defile himself by sleeping with an animal. That is a perverse action. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with any animal, thus defiling yourself with it; a woman must not stand before an animal to mate with it; that is a perversion.
25 UDB They even caused the land to become defiled, so I punished them for their sins, and it was as though the land had vomited out the people who lived there. BSB BSB: Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its sin, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants.
26 UDB But you must all obey my laws and decrees. This includes both you people who were born here and the foreigners who live among you. BSB BSB: But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances, and you must not commit any of these abominations—neither your native-born nor the foreigner who lives among you.
27 UDB As for all those detestable things, before you came, the people who lived in this land did them, and they defiled the land. BSB BSB: For the men who were in the land before you committed all these abominations, and the land has become defiled.
28 UDB So if you also defile the land, I will get rid of you as I got rid of the people of those nations that were here before you came. BSB BSB: So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it spewed out the nations before you.
29 UDB You must not allow people who do any of those detestable things to associate with you, who are my people. BSB BSB: Therefore anyone who commits any of these abominations must be cut off from among his people.
30 UDB Obey all that I command you to do, and do not defile yourselves by following any of the disgusting habits of the people who were there before you came. I, Yahweh your God, am the one who is commanding these things.'" BSB BSB: You must keep My charge not to practice any of the abominable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them. I am the LORD your God.”
