Jesus and Zacchaeus (Numbers 5:5–10)
UDB Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the city. BSB BSB: Then Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
UDB There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was in charge of collecting taxes and was very rich. BSB BSB: And there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, who was very wealthy.
UDB He wanted to see Jesus but he could not see him over the crowd. He was a very short man and there were many people around Jesus. BSB BSB: He was trying to see who Jesus was, but could not see over the crowd because he was small in stature.
UDB So he ran further down the road. He climbed a sycamore fig tree so he could see Jesus when he came by. BSB BSB: So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Him, since Jesus was about to pass that way.
UDB When Jesus got there, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, I have to stay at your house tonight!" BSB BSB: When Jesus came to that place, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down, for I must stay at your house today.”
UDB So he came down quickly. He was glad to welcome Jesus into his home. BSB BSB: So Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Him joyfully.
UDB But the people who saw Jesus go there grumbled, saying, "He has gone to be the guest of a real sinner!" BSB BSB: And all who saw this began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinful man!”
UDB Then Zacchaeus stood up while they were eating and said to Jesus, "Lord, I want you to know that I am going to give half of what I own to poor people. And as for the people whom I have cheated, I will pay them back four times the amount I have gotten from them." BSB BSB: But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will repay it fourfold.”
UDB Jesus said to him, "Today God has saved this household because this man has shown that he is a true descendant of Abraham. BSB BSB: Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.
UDB Remember this: I, the Son of Man, came to find and save people like you who have gone astray from God." BSB BSB: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
The Parable of the Ten Minas (Matthew 25:14–30)
UDB The people were listening to everything Jesus said. Since he was getting close to Jerusalem, Jesus decided to tell them another story. He wanted to correct their idea that as soon as he got to Jerusalem he would begin to rule as king over God's people. BSB BSB: While the people were listening to this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God would appear imminently.
UDB He said, "A prince prepared to go to a distant country in order to receive from a higher king the right to become king over the country where he lived. After he received the right of being king, he would return to rule his people. BSB BSB: So He said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to lay claim to his kingship and then return.
UDB Before he left, he summoned ten of his servants. He gave each of them an equal amount of money. He said to them, 'Do business with this money until I return!' Then he left. BSB BSB: Beforehand, he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Conduct business with this until I return,’ he said.
UDB "But many people of his country hated him. So they sent some messengers to follow him and say to the higher king, 'We do not want this man to be our king!' BSB BSB: But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want this man to rule over us.’
UDB But he was made king anyway. Later he returned as the new king. Then he called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to know how much they had gained by doing business with the money he had given them. BSB BSB: When he returned from procuring his kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each one had earned.
UDB "The first man came to him and said, 'Sir, with your money I have earned ten times as much!' BSB BSB: The first servant came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has produced ten more minas.’
UDB "He said to this man, 'You are a good servant! You have done very well! Because you have faithfully taken care of a small amount of money, I will give you ten cities to rule over.' BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
UDB "Then the second servant came and said, 'Sir, the money you gave me is now worth five times as much!' BSB BSB: The second servant came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’
UDB "He also said to that servant, 'Well done! I will put you over five cities.' BSB BSB: And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’
UDB "Then another servant came. He said, 'Sir, here is your money. I wrapped it up in a cloth and hid it to keep it safe. BSB BSB: Then another servant came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have laid away in a piece of cloth.
UDB I was afraid of what you would do to me if the business failed. I know you are a hard man who takes from others that which does not really belong to you. You are like a farmer who harvests grain that another man planted.' BSB BSB: For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.’
UDB "He said to that servant, 'You wicked servant! I will condemn you by the words you just said. You knew I was a hard man, because I take what does not belong to me and harvest what I did not plant. BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
UDB So you should at least have given my money to money lenders! Then when I returned I could have collected that amount plus the interest it would have earned!' BSB BSB: Why then did you not deposit my money in the bank, and upon my return I could have collected it with interest?’
UDB Then the king said to those who were standing near, 'Take the money from him and give it to the servant who made ten times as much!' BSB BSB: Then he told those standing by, ‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
UDB "They protested, 'But sir, he already has a lot of money!' BSB BSB: ‘Master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
UDB "But the king said, 'I tell you this: To the people who use well what they have received, I will give even more. But from the people who do not use well what they have received, I will take away even what they already have. BSB BSB: He replied, ‘I tell you that everyone who has will be given more; but the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
UDB Now, as for those enemies of mine who did not want me to rule over them, bring them here and execute them while I am watching!'" BSB BSB: And these enemies of mine who were unwilling for me to rule over them, bring them here and slay them in front of me.’”
The Triumphal Entry (Zechariah 9:9–13; Matthew 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–11; John 12:12–19)
UDB After Jesus said those things, he continued on the road up to Jerusalem, going ahead of the disciples. BSB BSB: After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
UDB When they got close to the villages of Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, BSB BSB: As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples,
UDB he said to two of his disciples, "Go to the village just ahead of you. As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied up there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it to me. BSB BSB: saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
UDB If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying the donkey?' say to him, 'The Lord needs it.'" BSB BSB: If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
UDB So the two disciples went to the village and found the donkey, just as Jesus had told them. BSB BSB: So those who were sent went out and found it just as Jesus had told them.
UDB As they were untying it, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying our donkey?" BSB BSB: As they were untying the colt, its owners asked, “Why are you untying the colt?”
UDB They replied, "The Lord needs it." BSB BSB: “The Lord needs it,” they answered.
UDB Then the disciples brought the donkey to Jesus. They threw their cloaks on the donkey's back for him to sit on and helped Jesus get on it. BSB BSB: Then they led the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and put Jesus on it.
UDB Then as he rode along, others spread their cloaks on the road in front of him to honor him. BSB BSB: As He rode along, the people spread their cloaks on the road.
UDB As they came along the road that goes down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God loudly for all the great miracles they had seen Jesus do. BSB BSB: And as He approached the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God joyfully in a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:
UDB They were saying things like, "May God bless our king who comes with God's authority! May there be peace between God in heaven and us his people, and may everyone praise God!" BSB BSB: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
UDB Some of the Pharisees who were in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell your disciples to stop saying those things!" BSB BSB: But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!”
UDB He replied, "I tell you this: If these people were silent, the stones themselves would shout to praise me!" BSB BSB: “I tell you,” He answered, “if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out.”
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem (Isaiah 29:1–16)
UDB When Jesus came near to Jerusalem and saw the city, he cried about its people. BSB BSB: As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it
UDB He said, "I wish that today you people knew how to have God's peace. But now you are unable to know it. BSB BSB: and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes.
UDB I want you to know this: Soon your enemies will come and will set up a barricade around your city. They will surround the city and attack it on all sides. BSB BSB: For the days will come upon you when your enemies will barricade you and surround you and hem you in on every side.
UDB They will break through the walls and destroy everything. They will destroy it and you and all your children. When they finish destroying everything, there will not be one stone left on top of another. All this will happen because you did not recognize the time when God came to save you!" BSB BSB: They will level you to the ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”
Jesus Cleanses the Temple (Matthew 21:12–17; Mark 11:15–19; John 2:12–25)
UDB Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courtyard. He saw in that place the people who were selling things, BSB BSB: Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling there.
UDB and he began to chase them out. He said to them, "It has been written in the scriptures, 'I want my house to be a place where people pray,' but you have made it a hideout for thieves!" BSB BSB: He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be a house of prayer.’ But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
UDB Each day during that week, Jesus was teaching people in the temple courtyard. The chief priests, the teachers of religious laws, and other Jewish leaders were trying to find a way to kill him. BSB BSB: Jesus was teaching at the temple every day, but the chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people were intent on killing Him.
UDB But they did not find any way to do it, because all the people were eager to hear him. BSB BSB: Yet they could not find a way to do so, because all the people hung on His words.
