Jesus Heals a Paralytic (Matthew 9:1–8; Luke 5:17–26)
UDB Soon a great number of people gathered where Jesus was staying. The number was so great that the house was full. There was no longer space to stand, not even around the doorway. Jesus spoke God's message to them. BSB BSB: they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room, not even outside the door, as Jesus spoke the word to them.
UDB Some people came to the house bringing to Jesus a man who was paralyzed. Four men carried him on a sleeping pad. BSB BSB: Then a paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.
UDB They were not able to bring the man to Jesus because of the crowd that had gathered. So they went up on the roof of the house and made a big hole in the roof above Jesus. They lowered the paralyzed man on his sleeping pad through the hole in front of Jesus. BSB BSB: Since they were unable to get to Jesus through the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat.
UDB Some men who taught the Jewish laws were sitting there. They started thinking to themselves, BSB BSB: But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking in their hearts,
UDB "Who does this man think he is? He is proud and insults God by saying that! Only God can forgive sins!" BSB BSB: “Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
UDB Jesus knew right away within himself what they were thinking. He said to them, "Why are you thinking these things? BSB BSB: At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked.
UDB Which would be easier for me to say, 'I have forgiven your sins' or 'Get up! Take your sleeping pad and walk'? BSB BSB: “Which is easier: to say to a paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
UDB I will show you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." Then he said to the paralyzed man, BSB BSB: But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic,
UDB The man stood up immediately! He picked up the sleeping pad, and then he went away, while all the people there were watching. They were all amazed, and they praised God and said, "We have never before seen anything like what happened just now!" BSB BSB: And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of them all. As a result, they were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew 9:9–13; Luke 5:27–32)
UDB Jesus left Capernaum and walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd came to him and he taught them. BSB BSB: Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to Him, and He taught them there.
UDB As he walked, he saw a man named Levi whose father's name was Alphaeus. He was sitting in his office where he collected taxes. Jesus said to him, "Come with me." He got up and went with Jesus. BSB BSB: As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.
UDB Later, Jesus was eating a meal in Levi's house. Many sinners and men who collected taxes were eating with Jesus and his disciples. BSB BSB: While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples—for there were many who followed Him.
UDB Men who taught the Jewish laws and who were members of the Pharisee sect saw that Jesus was eating with sinners and men who collected taxes. They asked Jesus's disciples, "Why does he eat and drink with sinners and men who collect taxes?" BSB BSB: When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Questions about Fasting (Matthew 9:14–15; Luke 5:33–35)
UDB Now at this time, the disciples of John the Baptizer and some men who belonged to the Pharisee sect were abstaining from food, as they often did. Some men came to Jesus and asked him, "The disciples of John and the Pharisees often abstain from food. Why do your disciples not abstain from food?" BSB BSB: Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?”
UDB Jesus said to them, "When a man is marrying a woman, his friends will certainly not abstain from food while he is still with them. The wedding is a time of feasting and celebrating with the groom. It is not a time for abstaining from food, especially while the groom is with them. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast.
UDB But the days will come when the groom will be taken away from them. Then in those days, they will abstain from food." BSB BSB: But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
The Patches and the Wineskins (Matthew 9:16–17; Luke 5:36–39)
UDB Jesus went on to say to them, "People do not sew a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment in order to mend a hole. If they did, when they washed the garment, the patch would shrink and the new piece of cloth would tear off more of the old cloth. As a result, the hole would become even bigger! BSB BSB: No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.
UDB Similarly, people do not put new wine into old skin bags to store it. If they did, the new wine will burst the skin bags because they would not stretch when the wine ferments and expands. As a result both the wine and the skin bags would be ruined! On the contrary, people must put new wine into new skin bags!" BSB BSB: And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”
The Lord of the Sabbath (1 Samuel 21:1–7; Matthew 12:1–8; Luke 6:1–5)
UDB Some of the Pharisees saw what they were doing and said to Jesus, "Look! They are breaking the Jewish law concerning the Sabbath. Why are they doing that?" BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
UDB During the time Abiathar was high priest, King David entered the house of God and asked for some bread. The high priest gave him some of the bread that had been on display before God. According to our laws, only the priests could eat that bread! But David ate some of it. Then he also gave some of it to the men who were with him." BSB BSB: During the high priesthood of Abiathar, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.”
UDB Jesus said to them further, "The Sabbath was established for the needs of people. People were not made in order to meet the requirements of the Sabbath! BSB BSB: Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
UDB So, to be clear, the Son of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath!" BSB BSB: Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
