1. Temple Destruction and Other Signs

   (Mark 13:1–8; Luke 21:5–9)

2. 1UDBJesus left the temple courtyard. As he was walking along, his disciples came to him and began talking about how beautiful the temple buildings were.BSBBSB: As Jesus left the temple and was walking away, His disciples came up to Him to point out its buildings.
3. 2UDBHe said to them, "I tell you the truth about these buildings that you are seeing: An army will completely destroy them. They will throw down every stone in these buildings. Not one stone will remain on top of another stone."BSBBSB: “Do you see all these things?” He replied. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
4. 3UDBLater, as Jesus was sitting alone on the slope of the Mount of Olives, the disciples went to him and asked him, "When will this happen to the buildings of the temple? And what will happen to show that you are about to come again, and to show that this world is about to end?"BSBBSB: While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?”
5. 4UDBJesus replied, "All that I will say is, be sure that no one deceives you about what will happen!BSBBSB: Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you.
6. 5UDBMany people will come and say that they are me. Yes, they will actually say, 'I am the Christ,' and they will deceive many people.BSBBSB: For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
7. 6UDBYou will hear about wars that are close and wars that are far away, but do not let that trouble you. Keep in mind that God has said that those things must happen. But when they happen, it will not mean that the end of the world has come!BSBBSB: You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.
8. 7UDBNations will attack each other, and kings will lead armies against each other. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.BSBBSB: Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.
9. 8UDBThese things will happen first, but they will be like when a woman starts to suffer pain before she gives birth to a child.BSBBSB: All these are the beginning of birth pains.

10. Witnessing to All Nations

    (Mark 13:9–13; Luke 21:10–19)

11. 9UDB"People who oppose you will cause you to suffer and die. All the nations will hate you because you believe in me.BSBBSB: Then they will deliver you over to be persecuted and killed, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.
12. 10UDBAlso, many people will stop believing because of the way they will suffer. They will betray their own fellow believers and will hate each other.BSBBSB: At that time many will fall away and will betray and hate one another,
13. 11UDBMany will come saying that they are prophets, but they will be lying, and they will deceive many people.BSBBSB: and many false prophets will arise and deceive many.
14. 12UDBBecause more and more people will disobey God's laws, many believers will no longer love each other.BSBBSB: Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.
15. 13UDBBut God will save all those who keep on believing to the end of their lives.BSBBSB: But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
16. 14UDBFurthermore, believers will preach the good news about how God is ruling in every part of the world, in order to announce it to all the nations. Then the end of the world will come.BSBBSB: And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

17. The Abomination of Desolation

    (Mark 13:14–23; Luke 21:20–24)

18. 15UDB"But before the world ends, the detestable thing that will defile the holy temple and cause people to abandon it will stand in the temple. Daniel the prophet spoke and wrote about that long ago. May everyone who reads this pay attention, because I am warning you.BSBBSB: So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand),
19. 16UDBWhen you see that happen in the temple, those of you who are in the region of Judea must flee to the higher hills!BSBBSB: then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
20. 17UDBThose who are outside their houses must not go back into their houses to get things before they run away.BSBBSB: Let no one on the housetop come down to retrieve anything from his house.
21. 18UDBThose who are working in a field should not turn back to get their outer clothing before they flee.BSBBSB: And let no one in the field return for his cloak.
22. 19UDBHow terrible it will be for pregnant women at that time, and for women who will be nursing their babies, because it will be very difficult for them to run away!BSBBSB: How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers!
23. 20UDBPray that you will not have to flee in the winter when it will be hard to travel, or on the Sabbath, the day of rest;BSBBSB: Pray that your flight will not occur in the winter or on the Sabbath.
24. 21UDBbecause people will suffer very severely when those things happen. People have never suffered that severely since God created the world until now, and no one will ever suffer like that again.BSBBSB: For at that time there will be great tribulation, unseen from the beginning of the world until now, and never to be seen again.
25. 22UDBIf God had not decided to shorten that time when people will suffer so much, everyone would die. But he has decided to shorten it because he is concerned about the people whom he has chosen.BSBBSB: If those days had not been cut short, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be cut short.
26. 23UDB"At that time, if someone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or if someone says, 'There is the Christ!' do not believe it!BSBBSB: At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it.
27. 24UDBThose false Christs and false prophets will perform many kinds of miracles and amazing things in order to deceive people. They will even try to deceive the people whom God has chosen, if that were possible.BSBBSB: For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive even the elect, if that were possible.
28. 25UDBDo not forget that I have warned you about all this before it happens.BSBBSB: See, I have told you in advance.

29. The Return of the Son of Man

    (Mark 13:24–27; Luke 21:25–28)

30. 26UDBSo if someone says to you, 'Look, the Christ is in the wilderness!' do not go there. Likewise, if someone says to you, 'Look, he is in a secret room!' do not believe that person,BSBBSB: So if they tell you, ‘There He is, in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Here He is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.
31. 27UDBbecause just like lightning flashes from the east to the west and people see it, in the same way, when the Son of Man returns again, everyone will see it.BSBBSB: For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
32. 28UDBIt will be clear to everyone, just as when you see vultures gathering you know that an animal carcass is there.BSBBSB: Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
33. 29UDB"Immediately after people have suffered during that time, the sun will become dark. The moon will not shine. The stars will fall from the sky. And God will shake all things in the sky loose from their place.BSBBSB: Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’
34. 30UDBAfter that, everyone will see me, the Son of Man, appear in the sky. Then unbelieving people from all peoples on earth will wail because they will be afraid. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and great glory.BSBBSB: At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
35. 31UDBHe will send his angels to the earth from everywhere in the heavens. When they hear the trumpet's loud blast, they will gather together God's people—the ones he has chosen—from across the whole earth.BSBBSB: And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

36. The Lesson of the Fig Tree

    (Mark 13:28–31; Luke 21:29–33)

37. 32UDB"Now be sure to learn something from how fig trees grow. When the branches of a fig tree become tender and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near.BSBBSB: Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
38. 33UDBSimilarly, when you see all these things happening, you will know that the time for him to return is very close.BSBBSB: So also, when you see all these things, you will know that He is near, right at the door.
39. 34UDBKeep this in mind: Some of the people of this generation will still be alive when these things happen.BSBBSB: Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.
40. 35UDBYou can be certain that these things I have told you about will happen. The earth and sky will disappear one day, but what I say will always be true.BSBBSB: Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

41. Readiness at Any Hour

    (Genesis 6:1–7; Mark 13:32–37; Luke 12:35–48)

42. 36UDB"But no other person, nor even any angel in heaven, nor even the Son, knows the day or the hour when these things will happen. Only God the Father knows.BSBBSB: No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
43. 37UDBIt will be like what happened when Noah lived. Until the flood came, the people did not know that anything bad would happen to them. They were eating and drinking as usual. Men were getting married, and parents were giving their daughters to men to marry them. They were doing all this until the day that Noah and his family entered the big boat. And then the flood came and drowned all those who were not in the boat. Similarly, the unbelieving people will not know when the Son of Man will return.BSBBSB: As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.
44. 40UDBWhen that happens, not all people will be taken up to heaven. For example, two people will be in the fields. One of them will be taken up to heaven and the other person will be left here to be punished.BSBBSB: Two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left.
45. 41UDBSimilarly, two women will be grinding grain with a handmill. One of them will be taken up to heaven and the other will be left.BSBBSB: Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left.
46. 42UDBSo, because you do not know what day your Lord will return to the earth, you need to be ready all the time.BSBBSB: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day on which your Lord will come.
47. 43UDBYou know that if the owner of a house knew at what time in the night thieves would come, he would be awake and prevent the thieves from breaking in. Similarly, the Son of Man will come as unexpectedly as a thief.BSBBSB: But understand this: If the homeowner had known in which watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.
48. 44UDBSo you need to be ready because the Son of Man will return to the earth at a time when you do not expect him to come.BSBBSB: For this reason, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.
49. 45UDB"Think about what every faithful and wise servant is like. The house owner appoints one servant to supervise the other servants. He tells him to give them food at the proper times. Then he leaves on a long trip.BSBBSB: Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give the others their food at the proper time?
50. 46UDBIf the servant is doing that work when the house owner returns, the house owner will be very pleased with him.BSBBSB: Blessed is that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.
51. 47UDBThink about this: The house owner will appoint that one servant to be the supervisor of all his possessions.BSBBSB: Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
52. 48UDBBut a wicked servant might say to himself, 'The owner has been away for a long time, so he probably will not return soon and find out what I am doing.'BSBBSB: But suppose that servant is wicked and says in his heart, ‘My master will be away a long time.’
53. 49UDBSo he will begin to beat the other servants and eat and drink with those who are drunk.BSBBSB: And he begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.
54. 50UDBThen the house owner will come back at a time when the servant does not expect him.BSBBSB: The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not anticipate.
55. 51UDBHe will punish that servant severely and he will put him where the hypocrites are put. In that place the people cry and grind their teeth because they suffer very much.BSBBSB: Then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
