The Plot to Kill Jesus (Mark 14:1–2; Luke 22:1–2; John 11:45–57)
UDB When Jesus had finished saying all those things, he said to the disciples, BSB BSB: When Jesus had finished saying all these things, He told His disciples,
UDB "You know that two days from now we will celebrate the Passover festival. At that time someone will hand the Son of Man over to those who will nail him to a cross." BSB BSB: “You know that the Passover is two days away, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
UDB There they planned how they could arrest Jesus in some tricky way so that they could have him executed. BSB BSB: and they conspired to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.
UDB But they said, "We must not do it during the Passover festival, because if we do it then, the people might riot." BSB BSB: “But not during the feast,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany (Mark 14:3–9; Luke 7:36–50; John 12:1–8)
UDB While Jesus and his disciples were in the village of Bethany, they ate in the home of Simon, whom Jesus had healed of leprosy. BSB BSB: While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper,
UDB During the meal, a woman came into the house. She was carrying a beautiful stone jar containing very expensive perfume. She went up to Jesus as he was eating and poured all the perfume on his head. BSB BSB: a woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, which she poured on His head as He reclined at the table.
UDB When the disciples saw that, they were very angry. One of them said, "It is terrible that this perfume was wasted! BSB BSB: When the disciples saw this, they were indignant and asked, “Why this waste?
UDB We could have sold it and gotten much money for it! Then we could have given the money to poor people." BSB BSB: This perfume could have been sold at a high price, and the money given to the poor.”
UDB Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said to them, "You should not be bothering this woman! She has done a beautiful thing to me. BSB BSB: Aware of this, Jesus asked, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful deed to Me.
UDB Keep in mind that you will always have poor people among you, so you can help them whenever you want to. But I will not always be with you! BSB BSB: The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.
UDB When she poured this perfume on my body, it was as if she knew that I am going to die soon. And it is as if she had anointed my body for being buried. BSB BSB: By pouring this perfume on Me, she has prepared My body for burial.
UDB I will tell you this: Wherever in the entire world people preach the good news about me, they will tell what this woman has done, and as a result, people will always remember her." BSB BSB: Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus (Mark 14:10–11; Luke 22:3–6)
UDB Then Judas Iscariot, even though he was one of the twelve disciples, went to the chief priests. BSB BSB: Then one of the Twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
UDB He asked them, "If I enable you to arrest Jesus, how much money are you willing to give me?" They agreed to give him thirty silver coins. So they counted out the coins and gave them to him. BSB BSB: and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?” And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver.
UDB From that time Judas watched for an opportunity when they could arrest Jesus. BSB BSB: So from then on Judas looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
Preparing the Passover (Mark 14:12–16; Luke 22:7–13)
UDB On the first day of the week-long Festival of Bread with No Yeast, the disciples went to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to prepare the meal for the Passover Celebration so that we can eat it with you?" BSB BSB: On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
UDB Jesus instructed two of the disciples about what they should do. He said to them, "Go into the city to a man with whom I have previously arranged this. Tell him that I, the Teacher, say this: 'The time that I told you about is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover meal with my disciples at your house, and I have sent these two to prepare the meal.'" BSB BSB: He answered, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him that the Teacher says, ‘My time is near. I will keep the Passover with My disciples at your house.’”
UDB So the two disciples did as Jesus told them. They went and prepared the Passover meal in that man's house. BSB BSB: So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
The Last Supper (Mark 14:17–26; Luke 22:14–23; 1 Corinthians 11:17–34)
UDB When that evening had come, Jesus was eating the meal with the twelve disciples. BSB BSB: When evening came, Jesus was reclining with the twelve disciples.
UDB He said to them, "Listen carefully to this: One of you is going to enable my enemies to arrest me." BSB BSB: And while they were eating, He said to them, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray Me.”
UDB The disciples were very sad. They began to say to him, one after the other, "Lord, it is surely not I!" BSB BSB: They were deeply grieved and began to ask Him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?”
UDB He replied, "The one who will enable my enemies to arrest me is the one of you who is dipping bread into the sauce in the dish along with me. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me.
UDB It is certain that I, the Son of Man, will die, because that is what the scriptures say about me. But there will be terrible punishment for the man who enables my enemies to arrest me! It would be better for that man if he had never been born!" BSB BSB: The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed. It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
UDB Then Judas, the one who was going to betray him, said, "Teacher, surely it is not I!" Jesus replied, "Yes, you are admitting it." BSB BSB: Then Judas, who would betray Him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said it yourself.”
UDB While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread and thanked God for it. He broke it into pieces, gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take this bread and eat it. It is my body." BSB BSB: While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.”
UDB Later he took a cup of wine and thanked God for it. Then he gave it to them and said, "Drink from this cup, all of you. BSB BSB: Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.
UDB The wine in this cup is my blood, which will soon flow from my body. This blood will mark the new covenant that God is making to forgive the sins of many people. BSB BSB: This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
UDB Note this carefully: I will not drink wine in this way anymore until the time when I drink it with you with a new meaning. That will happen when my Father rules completely." BSB BSB: I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
UDB After they sang a hymn, they started out toward the Mount of Olives. BSB BSB: And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial (Zechariah 13:7–9; Mark 14:27–31; Luke 22:31–38; John 13:36–38)
UDB On the way, Jesus told them, "This night all of you will desert me because of what will happen to me! This is certain to happen because these words that God said are written in the scriptures: 'I will cause men to kill the shepherd, and they will scatter all the sheep.' BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of Me. For it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
UDB But after I have died and become alive again, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there." BSB BSB: But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
UDB Peter replied, "Perhaps all the other disciples will desert you when they see what happens to you, but I certainly will never leave you!" BSB BSB: Peter said to Him, “Even if all fall away on account of You, I never will.”
UDB Jesus replied to him, "The truth is that this very night, before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you do not know me!" BSB BSB: “Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
UDB Peter said to him, "Even if they kill me while I am defending you, I will never say that I do not know you!" All the rest of the disciples also said the same thing. BSB BSB: Peter replied, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.” And all the other disciples said the same thing.
Jesus Prays at Gethsemane (Mark 14:32–42; Luke 22:39–46)
UDB Then Jesus went with the disciples to a place that is called Gethsemane. There he said, "Stay here while I go over there and pray." BSB BSB: Then Jesus went with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and He told them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”
UDB He took Peter, James, and John with him. He became extremely distressed. BSB BSB: He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.
UDB Then he said to them, "I am very sorrowful, so much so that I feel as if I were about to die! Remain here and stay awake with me!" BSB BSB: Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”
UDB After going a little farther, he threw himself facedown on the ground. He prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, do not make me suffer in the way I know I will have to. But do not do as I want. Instead, do as you want!" BSB BSB: Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”
UDB Then he returned to the three disciples and saw that they were sleeping. He woke Peter and said to him, "I am disappointed that you men fell asleep and were not able to stay awake with me for just a short time! BSB BSB: Then Jesus returned to the disciples and found them sleeping. “Were you not able to keep watch with Me for one hour?” He asked Peter.
UDB You must keep alert and pray so that you can resist when anyone tempts you to sin. You want to do what I tell you, but you are not strong enough to actually do it." BSB BSB: “Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
UDB He went away a second time. He prayed, "My Father, if it is necessary for me to suffer, may what you want happen!" BSB BSB: A second time He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, may Your will be done.”
UDB When he returned to the three disciples, he saw that they were asleep again. They could not keep their eyes open. BSB BSB: And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
UDB So he left them and went away again. He prayed a third time, saying the same thing that he had prayed before. BSB BSB: So He left them and went away once more and prayed a third time, saying the same thing.
UDB Then he returned to all the disciples. He woke them up and said to them, "I am disappointed that you are still sleeping and resting! Look! Someone is about to enable sinful men to arrest me, the Son of Man! BSB BSB: Then He returned to the disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
UDB Get up! Let us go to meet them! Here comes the one who is enabling them to arrest me!" BSB BSB: Rise, let us go! See, My betrayer is approaching!”
The Betrayal of Jesus (Mark 14:43–52; Luke 22:47–53; John 18:1–14)
UDB Judas had previously arranged to give them a signal. He had told them, "The man whom I will kiss is the one you want. Arrest him!" BSB BSB: Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I kiss is the man; arrest Him.”
UDB He immediately went to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Teacher!" Then he kissed Jesus. BSB BSB: Going directly to Jesus, he said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
UDB Jesus replied, "Friend, what you are about to do, do it quickly." Then the men who came with Judas stepped forward and seized Jesus. BSB BSB: “Friend,” Jesus replied, “do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus, and arrested Him.
UDB Do you think that if I asked my Father, he would not immediately send more than twelve armies of angels to help me? BSB BSB: Are you not aware that I can call on My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
UDB But if I did that, what the prophets have written in the scriptures about what will happen to the Christ would not be fulfilled." BSB BSB: But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?”
UDB At that time Jesus said to the crowd that was seizing him, "You have come here to seize me with swords and clubs, as if I were a bandit! Day after day I sat in the temple courtyard, teaching the people. Why did you not arrest me then? BSB BSB: At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw? Every day I sat teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest Me.
UDB But all this is happening to fulfill what the prophets have written in the scriptures about me." Then all of the disciples deserted Jesus and ran away. BSB BSB: But this has all happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.
Jesus before the Sanhedrin (Mark 14:53–65; Luke 22:66–71; John 18:19–24)
UDB Peter followed Jesus at a distance. He came to the high priest's courtyard. He entered the courtyard and sat down with the guards to see what would happen. BSB BSB: But Peter followed Him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. And he went in and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
UDB The chief priests and the rest of the Jewish council were trying to find persons who would tell lies about Jesus so that they could condemn him to death. BSB BSB: Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death.
UDB But even though many people spoke lies about him, they did not find anyone who said anything that was useful. Finally two men came forward BSB BSB: But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward
UDB and said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy God's temple and to rebuild it within three days.'" BSB BSB: and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”
UDB Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to reply? What do you say about these things that they are saying to accuse you?" BSB BSB: So the high priest stood up and asked Him, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?”
UDB But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, "I command you to tell us the truth; you know that the all-powerful God is listening to you: Are you the Christ, the Son of God?" BSB BSB: But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “I charge You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.”
UDB Jesus replied, "Yes, it is as you say. But I will also say this to all of you: On that day you will see the Son of Man sitting beside Almighty God and ruling. You will also see him coming on the clouds from heaven!" BSB BSB: “You have said it yourself,” Jesus answered. “But I say to all of you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
UDB The high priest was so upset that he tore his outer garment. Then he said, "This man has insulted God! He claims to be equal with God! We certainly do not need anyone else to testify against this man! You heard what he said! BSB BSB: At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “He has blasphemed! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.
UDB What do you think?" The Jewish leaders replied, "According to our laws, he is guilty and deserves to be executed!" BSB BSB: What do you think?” “He deserves to die,” they answered.
UDB Then some of them spat in his face. Others struck him with their fists. Others slapped him BSB BSB: Then they spit in His face and struck Him. Others slapped Him
UDB and said, "Since you claim that you are the Christ, tell us who hit you!" BSB BSB: and said, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit You?”
Peter Denies Jesus (Mark 14:66–72; Luke 22:54–62; John 18:15–18)
UDB Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came up to him and looked at him. She said, "You also were with Jesus, that man from the district of Galilee!" BSB BSB: Meanwhile, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came up to him. “You also were with Jesus the Galilean,” she said.
UDB But while everyone there was listening, he denied it. He said, "I do not know what you are talking about!" BSB BSB: But he denied it before them all: “I do not know what you are talking about.”
UDB Then he went out to the gateway of the courtyard. Another servant girl saw him and said to the people who were standing nearby, "This man was with Jesus, the man from Nazareth." BSB BSB: When Peter had gone out to the gateway, another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
UDB But Peter again denied it. He said, "May God punish me if I am lying! I tell you, I do not even know that man!" BSB BSB: And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man!”
UDB After a little while, the people who were standing there approached Peter and said to him, "It is certain that you are one of those who were with that man. We can tell from your accent that you are from Galilee." BSB BSB: After a little while, those standing nearby came up to Peter. “Surely you are one of them,” they said, “for your accent gives you away.”
UDB Then Peter began to proclaim loudly that God should curse him if he was lying. He asked God in heaven to witness that he was telling the truth and said, "I do not know that man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. BSB BSB: At that he began to curse and swear to them, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.
UDB Then Peter remembered the words that Jesus had spoken to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you do not know me." And Peter went out of the courtyard, crying hard because he was so sad about what he had done. BSB BSB: Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
