The Temptation of Jesus (Mark 1:12–13; Luke 4:1–13)
UDB Then God's Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for the devil to tempt him. BSB BSB: Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
UDB After he had not eaten food day and night for forty days, he was hungry. BSB BSB: After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.
UDB Satan, the tempter, came to him and said, "If you are really the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread for yourself!" BSB BSB: The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
UDB But Jesus said to him, "No! I will not do this, because God has said in the scriptures, 'For people to truly live, they must have more than food; they must listen to every word that God has spoken.'" BSB BSB: But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
UDB Then the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem, the city that was especially for God. He set him on the highest part of the temple BSB BSB: Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.
UDB and said to him, "If you are truly the Son of God, jump down to the ground. You will, of course, not be hurt, because God has said in the scriptures, 'God will command his angels to protect you. They will lift you up in their hands when you are falling, and they will keep you from even hitting your foot on a stone.'" BSB BSB: “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
UDB But Jesus said, "No! I will not jump down, because God has also said in the scriptures, 'Do not try to make your God prove who he is.'" BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
UDB Then the devil took him on top of a very high mountain. There he showed him all the nations in the world and the magnificent things in those nations. BSB BSB: Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
UDB Then he said to him, "I will let you rule all these nations and give you the magnificent things in them if you bow down and worship me." BSB BSB: “All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.”
UDB But Jesus said to him, "No, I will not worship you, Satan, so go away! God has said in the scriptures, 'It is to the Lord your God whom you must bow down, and you must worship only him!'" BSB BSB: “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
UDB Then the devil went away, and at that moment, angels came to Jesus and took care of him. BSB BSB: Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.
Jesus Begins His Ministry (Isaiah 9:1–7; Mark 1:14–15; Luke 4:14–15)
UDB While Jesus was in the province of Judea, John the Baptizer's disciples came and told him that King Herod had put John in prison. So Jesus returned to the district of Galilee, to the town of Nazareth. BSB BSB: When Jesus heard that John had been imprisoned, He withdrew to Galilee.
UDB Then he left Nazareth and went to the city of Capernaum in order to live there. Capernaum is located beside the Sea of Galilee in the region that formerly belonged to the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali. BSB BSB: Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
UDB He went there so that these words that the prophet Isaiah had written long ago might come true: BSB BSB: to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
UDB "The regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, regions by the road going to the Sea, on the eastern side of the Jordan River, regions in Galilee, where many Gentiles lived— BSB BSB: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
UDB those people do not know God, as if they were in darkness, but they will learn the truth, as if a bright light had shone on them. Yes, they have been very afraid of dying, but a brilliant light has shone upon them!" BSB BSB: the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.”
UDB At that time, while Jesus was in the city of Capernaum, he began to preach to the people, "The rule of God from heaven is near, and he will judge you when he rules. So stop sinning!" BSB BSB: From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
The First Disciples (Mark 1:16–20; Luke 5:1–11; John 1:35–42)
UDB One day while Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two men, Simon, who was later called Peter, and Andrew, his younger brother. They were casting their fishing net into the water because they caught and sold fish. BSB BSB: As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
UDB Jesus said to them, "Come with me and I will teach you how to gather people to become my disciples. I will make your work fishing for people." BSB BSB: “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
UDB They immediately left the work that they were doing and went with him. BSB BSB: And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
UDB As the three of them walked on from there, Jesus saw two other men, James and John the younger brother of James. They were in their boat with Zebedee, their father, mending their fishing nets. Jesus told them that they should leave their work and go with him. BSB BSB: Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. Jesus called them,
UDB Immediately they also left their boat and their father and went with Jesus. BSB BSB: and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.
Jesus Heals the Multitudes (Mark 3:7–12; Luke 6:17–19)
UDB When people who lived in other parts of the district of Syria heard what he was doing, they brought to him people who suffered from illnesses, people who suffered from many kinds of diseases, people who suffered from severe pains, people who were controlled by demons, people who were epileptics, and people who were paralyzed. And Jesus healed them. BSB BSB: News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering acute pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and He healed them.
UDB Then large crowds started to go with him. They were people from Galilee, from the Ten Towns, from the city of Jerusalem, from other parts of the province of Judea, and from areas east of the Jordan River. BSB BSB: Large crowds followed Him, having come from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
