The Leper’s Prayer (Leviticus 14:1–32; Mark 1:40–45; Luke 5:12–16)
UDB When Jesus went down from the hillside, large crowds followed him. BSB BSB: When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him.
UDB After Jesus left the crowds, a man who had a skin disease came and knelt before him. He said to Jesus, "Lord, please heal me because I know you are able to heal me if you are willing to." BSB BSB: Suddenly a leper came and knelt before Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
UDB Then Jesus stretched out his hand and touched the man. He said to him, "I am willing to heal you, and I heal you now!" Immediately the man was healed from his sickness. BSB BSB: Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
UDB Then Jesus said to him, "Make sure that now you do not report about my healing you to anyone other than the priest. Then go to the temple in Jerusalem and give the offering that Moses commanded so people will know about it." BSB BSB: Then Jesus instructed him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift prescribed by Moses, as a testimony to them.”
The Faith of the Centurion (Luke 7:1–10; John 4:43–54)
UDB When Jesus went to the city of Capernaum, a Roman officer who commanded one hundred soldiers came to him. He begged Jesus to help him. BSB BSB: When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came and pleaded with Him,
UDB He said to him, "Lord, my servant is lying in bed at home and is paralyzed, and he has severe pain." BSB BSB: “Lord, my servant lies at home, paralyzed and in terrible agony.”
UDB Jesus said to him, "I will go to your house and heal him." BSB BSB: “I will go and heal him,” Jesus replied.
UDB But the officer said to him, "I am not worthy for you to come into my house. Instead, just say that my servant is healed, and he will be healed. BSB BSB: The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
UDB It is the same way with me. I am a soldier; I have to obey my commanders, and I also have soldiers that I command. When I say to one of them, 'Go!' he goes. When I say to another, 'Come!' he comes. When I say to my slave, 'Do this!' he does it." BSB BSB: For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes, and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”
UDB When Jesus heard this, he marveled. He said to the crowd that was walking with him, "Listen to this: I have never before found anyone who trusts in me as much as this man. Not even in Israel, where I would expect people to believe in me, have I found anyone who trusts so much in me! BSB BSB: When Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those following Him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
UDB I tell you truly that many other people will believe in me also, and they will come from distant countries, including those far to the east and far to the west, and they will sit down to feast with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when God will rule from heaven over everything completely. BSB BSB: I say to you that many will come from the east and the west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
UDB But as for the Jews whom God intended to rule—he will throw them into hell, where there is total darkness. There they will weep because of their suffering, and they will grind their teeth because they will have severe pain." BSB BSB: But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
UDB Then Jesus said to the officer, "Go home. What you believed will happen." Then the officer went home and found out that his servant had become well at the exact time that Jesus told him that he would heal him. BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! As you have believed, so will it be done for you.” And his servant was healed at that very hour.
Jesus Heals at Peter’s House (Mark 1:29–34; Luke 4:38–41)
UDB He touched her hand, and immediately she no longer had a fever. Then she got up and served them some food. BSB BSB: So He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve Him.
UDB That evening when the Sabbath ended, the crowd brought to Jesus many people whom demons controlled and other people who were sick. He made the demons leave just by speaking to them, and he healed all the people who were sick. BSB BSB: When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Jesus, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
UDB When he did this, he made come true what the prophet Isaiah had written, "He freed people from being sick, and he made them well." BSB BSB: This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases.”
The Cost of Discipleship (Luke 9:57–62; Luke 14:25–33; John 6:59–66)
UDB Jesus saw the crowd around him, and he told his disciples to take him by boat to the other side of the lake. BSB BSB: When Jesus saw a large crowd around Him, He gave orders to cross to the other side of the sea.
UDB As they were walking toward the boat, a man who taught the Jewish laws came to him and said, "Teacher, I will go with you wherever you go." BSB BSB: And one of the scribes came to Him and said, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”
UDB Jesus answered him, "Foxes have holes in the ground in which to live and birds have nests, but even though I am the Son of Man, I do not have a home where I can sleep." BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”
UDB Another man who was one of Jesus's disciples said to him, "Lord, permit me first to go home. After my father dies I will bury him, and then I will come with you." BSB BSB: Another of His disciples requested, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
UDB But Jesus said to him, "Come with me now. The people who are as good as dead, let them wait for their own people to die." BSB BSB: But Jesus told him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm (Psalm 107:1–43; Mark 4:35–41; Luke 8:22–25)
UDB Then Jesus got into the boat and his disciples followed him. BSB BSB: When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him.
UDB Suddenly, strong winds blew on the water, and very high waves were splashing into the boat and filling it. But Jesus was sleeping. BSB BSB: Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was engulfed by the waves. But Jesus was sleeping.
UDB They went and woke him up and said to him, "Lord, rescue us! We are about to drown!" BSB BSB: The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
UDB He said to them, "You should not be terrified! You do not believe very much that I can rescue you." Then he got up and rebuked the wind and told the waves to calm down. Immediately the wind stopped blowing and the water became calm. BSB BSB: “You of little faith,” Jesus replied, “why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was perfectly calm.
UDB The men were amazed, and they said to each other, "This man is certainly an extraordinary person! All things are under his control! Even the winds and the waves obey him!" BSB BSB: The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!”
The Demons and the Pigs (Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39)
UDB When they came to the east side of the lake, they arrived in the region where the Gadarenes lived. Then two men whom demons controlled came out of the burial caves where they were living. Because they were extremely violent and attacked people, no one dared to travel on the road there. BSB BSB: When Jesus arrived on the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, He was met by two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
UDB Suddenly they shouted to Jesus, "You are the Son of God! Because you have nothing in common with us, leave us alone! Have you come here to torture us before the time God has appointed to punish us?" BSB BSB: “What do You want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?”
UDB There was a large herd of pigs grazing not far away. BSB BSB: In the distance a large herd of pigs was feeding.
UDB So the demons begged Jesus and said, "You are going to drive us out of these men, so send us into those pigs!" BSB BSB: So the demons begged Jesus, “If You drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
UDB Jesus said to them, "If that is what you want, go!" So the demons left the men and entered the pigs. Suddenly the whole herd of pigs rushed down the steep bank into the water and drowned. BSB BSB: “Go!” He told them. So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and died in the waters.
UDB The men who were tending the pigs became afraid and ran into the town and reported everything that had happened, including what had happened to the two men whom demons had controlled. BSB BSB: Those tending the pigs ran off into the town and reported all this, including the account of the demon-possessed men.
UDB Then it seemed as if all the people who lived in that town went to meet Jesus. When they saw him and the two men whom demons had controlled, they pleaded with Jesus to leave their region. BSB BSB: Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their region.
