The Boundaries of Canaan (Genesis 15:8–21)
1 UDB Yahweh said to Moses, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 UDB "Tell this to the Israelite people, 'You will soon enter the land of Canaan, and it will become yours. The following will be the borders of the land. BSB BSB: “Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, it will be allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
3 UDB On the south you will receive part of the wilderness of Zin, near the border of the region of Edom. On the east side, the border will start at the south end of the Dead Sea. BSB BSB: Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea,
4 UDB It will extend to a little south of the Scorpion Pass, and extend west through the wilderness of Sin and south of Kadesh Barnea. From there it will extend to Hazar Addar and from there to Azmon. BSB BSB: cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue to Zin, and go south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it will go on to Hazar-addar and proceed to Azmon,
5 UDB From Azmon it will extend west to the dry riverbed at the border of Egypt and then to the Mediterranean Sea. BSB BSB: where it will turn from Azmon, join the Brook of Egypt, and end at the Sea.
6 UDB The border on the west will be the Mediterranean Sea. BSB BSB: Your western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea; this will be your boundary on the west.
7 UDB The border on the north will start from the Mediterranean Sea and extend west to Mount Hor. BSB BSB: Your northern border will run from the Great Sea directly to Mount Hor,
8 UDB From there it will extend to Lebo Hamath and then to Zedad. BSB BSB: and from Mount Hor to Lebo-hamath, then extend to Zedad,
9 UDB From there the border will extend to Ziphron, and it will end at Hazar Enan. BSB BSB: continue to Ziphron, and end at Hazar-enan. This will be your boundary on the north.
10 UDB The border on the east will start at Hazar Enan and extend south to Shepham. BSB BSB: And your eastern border will run straight from Hazar-enan to Shepham,
11 UDB From there it will extend east of Ain to Riblah and then along the hills that are east of Galilee Lake. BSB BSB: then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth.
12 UDB Then the border will extend south along the Jordan River and end at the Dead Sea. Those will be the borders around your country.'" BSB BSB: Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
13 UDB So Moses told all that to the Israelite people. Then he said to them, "That is the land that you will receive. You must cast lots to decide which area will go to each of the nine and a half tribes, because Yahweh has commanded that it should be divided among them. BSB BSB: So Moses commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
14 UDB The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh have already received the land in which they will live. BSB BSB: For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance.
15 UDB They have received land on the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho." BSB BSB: These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
Leaders to Divide the Land 16 UDB Then Yahweh said to Moses, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
17 UDB "These are the men who will divide the land: first, Eleazar and Joshua, BSB BSB: “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
18 UDB but other leaders from each of the twelve tribes will help them divide the land. BSB BSB: Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land.
19 UDB From the tribe of Judah, appoint Jephunneh's son Caleb. BSB BSB: These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah;
20 UDB From the tribe of Simeon, appoint Ammihud's son Shemuel. BSB BSB: Shemuel son of Ammihud from the tribe of Simeon;
21 UDB From the tribe of Benjamin, appoint Kislon's son Elidad. BSB BSB: Elidad son of Chislon from the tribe of Benjamin;
22 UDB From the tribe of Dan, appoint Jogli's son Bukki. BSB BSB: Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan;
23 UDB From the tribe of Manasseh, appoint Ephod's son Hanniel. BSB BSB: Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph;
24 UDB From the tribe of Ephraim, appoint Shiphtan's son Kemuel. BSB BSB: Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim;
25 UDB From the tribe of Zebulun, appoint Parnak's son Elizaphan. BSB BSB: Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a leader from the tribe of Zebulun;
26 UDB From the tribe of Issachar, appoint Azzan's son Paltiel. BSB BSB: Paltiel son of Azzan, a leader from the tribe of Issachar;
27 UDB From the tribe of Asher, appoint Shelomi's son Ahihud. BSB BSB: Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher;
28 UDB From the tribe of Naphtali, appoint Ammihud's son Pedahel." BSB BSB: and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”
29 UDB Yahweh commanded that all those were the men who should divide the region of Canaan among the Israelite people. BSB BSB: These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
