God’s Covenant with David (2 Samuel 7:1–17)
UEB It happened that after the king had settled in his house, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Look, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is staying under a tent." BSB BSB: After David had settled into his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”
UEB Then Nathan said to David, "Go, do what is in your heart, for God is with you." BSB BSB: And Nathan replied to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
UEB But that same night the word of God came to Nathan, saying, BSB BSB: But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
UEB "Go and tell David my servant, 'This is what Yahweh says: You will not build me a house in which to live. BSB BSB: “Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build Me a house in which to dwell.
UEB For I have not lived in a house from the day that I brought up Israel to this present day. Instead, I have been living in a tent, a tabernacle, in various places. BSB BSB: For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved from tent to tent and dwelling to dwelling.
UEB In all places I have moved among all Israel, did I ever say anything to any of Israel's leaders whom I appointed to shepherd my people, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"'" BSB BSB: In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to shepherd My people, ‘Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’
UEB "Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what Yahweh of hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, so that you would be ruler over my people Israel. BSB BSB: Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
UEB I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and I will make you a name, like the name of the great ones who are on the earth. BSB BSB: I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like that of the greatest in the land.
UEB I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them there, so that they may live in their own place and be troubled no more. No longer will wicked people oppress them, as they did before, BSB BSB: And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their own and be disturbed no more. No longer will the sons of wickedness oppress them as they did at the beginning
UEB as they were doing from the days that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Then I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover I tell you that I, Yahweh, will build you a house. BSB BSB: and have done since the day I appointed judges over My people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you.
UEB It will come about that when your days are fulfilled for you to go to your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, and for one of your own descendants, I will establish his kingdom. BSB BSB: And when your days are fulfilled and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
UEB He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. BSB BSB: He will build a house for Me, and I will establish his throne forever.
UEB I will be a father to him, and he will be my son. I will not take my covenant faithfulness away from him, as I took it from Saul, who ruled before you. BSB BSB: I will be his Father, and he will be My son. And I will never remove My loving devotion from him as I removed it from your predecessor.
UEB I will set him over my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.'" BSB BSB: But I will set him over My house and My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.”
UEB Nathan spoke to David and reported to him all these words, and he told him about the entire vision. BSB BSB: So Nathan relayed to David all the words of this entire revelation.
David’s Prayer of Thanksgiving (2 Samuel 7:18–29)
UEB Then David the king went in and sat before Yahweh; he said, "Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my family, that you have brought me to this point? BSB BSB: Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
UEB For this was a small thing in your sight, God. You have spoken of your servant's family for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, Yahweh God. BSB BSB: And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O God, You have spoken about the future of the house of Your servant and have regarded me as a man of great distinction, O LORD God.
UEB What more can I, David, say to you? You have honored your servant. You have given your servant special recognition. BSB BSB: What more can David say to You for honoring Your servant? For You know Your servant,
UEB Yahweh, for your servant's sake, and to fulfill your own purpose, you have done this great thing to reveal all your great deeds. BSB BSB: O LORD. For the sake of Your servant and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and made known all these great promises.
UEB Yahweh, there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, just as we have always heard. BSB BSB: O LORD, there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
UEB For what nation on earth is like your people Israel, whom you, God, rescued from Egypt as a people for yourself, to make a name for yourself by great and awesome deeds? You drove out nations from before your people, whom you rescued from Egypt. BSB BSB: And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to redeem as a people for Himself? You made a name for Yourself through great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt.
UEB You made Israel your own people forever, and you, Yahweh, became their God. BSB BSB: For You have made Your people Israel Your very own forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
UEB So now, Yahweh, may the promise that you made concerning your servant and his family be established forever. Do as you have spoken. BSB BSB: And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house be established forever. Do as You have promised,
UEB May your name be established forever and be great, so the people will say, 'Yahweh of hosts is the God of Israel,' while the house of me, David, your servant is established before you. BSB BSB: so that Your name will be established and magnified forever when it is said, ‘The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, is God over Israel.’ And may the house of Your servant David be established before You.
UEB For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a house. That is why I, your servant, have found courage to pray to you. BSB BSB: For You, my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build a house for him. Therefore Your servant has found the courage to pray before You.
UEB Now, Yahweh, you are God, and have made this good promise to your servant: BSB BSB: And now, O LORD, You are God! And You have promised this goodness to Your servant.
UEB Now it has pleased you to bless your servant's house, that it may continue forever before you. You, Yahweh, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever." BSB BSB: So now You have been pleased to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”
