BSB BSB: In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
UEB The Lord gave Nebuchadnezzar victory over Jehoiakim king of Judah, and he gave him some of the sacred objects from the house of God. He brought them into the land of Babylonia, to the house of his god, and he placed the sacred objects in his god's treasury. BSB BSB: And the Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with some of the articles from the house of God. He carried these off to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, where he put them in the treasury of his god.
UEB The king spoke to Ashpenaz, his chief official, to bring in some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility— BSB BSB: Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites from the royal family and the nobility—
UEB young men without blemish, attractive in appearance, skillful in all wisdom, filled with knowledge and understanding, and qualified to serve in the king's palace. He was to teach them the Babylonians' literature and language. BSB BSB: young men without blemish, handsome, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace—and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans.
UEB The king counted out for them a daily portion of his delicacies and some of the wine that he drank. These young men were to be trained for three years, and after that, they would serve the king. BSB BSB: The king assigned them daily provisions of the royal food and wine. They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king’s service.
UEB Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, some of the people of Judah. BSB BSB: Among these young men were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

BSB BSB: The chief official gave them new names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
Daniel’s Faithfulness 8 UEB But Daniel intended in his mind that he would not pollute himself with the king's delicacies or with the wine that he drank. So he asked permission from the chief official that he might not pollute himself. BSB BSB: But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or wine. So he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself.
UEB Now God gave Daniel favor and compassion through the respect that the chief official had for him. BSB BSB: Now God had granted Daniel favor and compassion from the chief official,
UEB The chief official said to Daniel, "I am afraid of my master the king. He has commanded what food and drink you should have. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men of your own age? The king might have my head because of you." BSB BSB: but he said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking thinner than those of the other young men your age? You would endanger my head before the king!”
UEB Then Daniel spoke to the steward whom the chief official had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. BSB BSB: Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
UEB He said, "Please test us, your servants, for ten days. Give us only some vegetables to eat and water to drink. BSB BSB: “Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink.
UEB Then compare our appearance with the appearance of the young men who eat the king's delicacies, and treat us, your servants, based on what you see." BSB BSB: Then compare our appearances with those of the young men who are eating the royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
UEB So the steward agreed with him to do this, and he tested them for ten days. BSB BSB: So he consented to this and tested them for ten days.
UEB At the end of ten days their appearance was more healthy, and they were better nourished, than all the young men who ate the king's delicacies. BSB BSB: And at the end of ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished than all the young men who were eating the king’s food.
UEB So the steward took away their delicacies and their wine and gave them only vegetables. BSB BSB: So the steward continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and he gave them vegetables instead.

UEB The king spoke with them, and among the whole group there were none to compare with Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. They stood before the king, ready to serve him. BSB BSB: And the king spoke with them, and among all the young men he found no one equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the king’s service.
