Wanderings in the Wilderness 1 UEB Then we turned and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Sea of Reeds, as Yahweh had spoken to me; we went around Mount Seir for many days. BSB BSB: Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea, as the LORD had instructed me, and for many days we wandered around Mount Seir.
UEB Yahweh spoke to me, saying, BSB BSB: At this time the LORD said to me,
UEB 'You have gone around this mountain long enough; turn northward. BSB BSB: “You have been wandering around this hill country long enough; turn to the north
UEB Command the people, saying, "You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir; they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful BSB BSB: and command the people: ‘You will pass through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be very careful.
UEB not to fight with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not even enough for the sole of a foot to step on; for I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. BSB BSB: Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as his possession.
UEB You will purchase food from them for money, so that you may eat; you will also buy water from them for money, so that you may drink. BSB BSB: You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’”
UEB For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; he has known your walking through this great wilderness. For these forty years Yahweh your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing."' BSB BSB: Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
UEB So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of Esau who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road, from Elath and from Ezion Geber. Then we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab. BSB BSB: So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion-geber, and traveled along the road of the Wilderness of Moab.
UEB (The Emites lived there previously, a people as great, as many, and as tall as the Anakim; BSB BSB: (The Emites used to live there, a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites.
UEB these also are considered to be the Rephaim, like the Anakim; but the Moabites call them the Emim. BSB BSB: Like the Anakites, they were also regarded as Rephaim, though the Moabites called them Emites.
UEB The Horites also lived in Seir previously, but the descendants of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them and lived in their place, like Israel did to the land of his possession that Yahweh gave to them.) BSB BSB: The Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land that the LORD gave them as their possession.)
UEB "'Now rise up and go over the brook Zered.' So we went over the brook Zered. BSB BSB: “Now arise and cross over the Brook of Zered.” So we crossed over the Brook of Zered.
UEB Now the days from when we came from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the brook Zered, were thirty-eight years. It was by that time that all that generation of the men fit for fighting were gone from the people, as Yahweh had sworn to them. BSB BSB: The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.
UEB Moreover, the hand of Yahweh was against that generation in order to destroy them from the people until they were gone. BSB BSB: Indeed, the LORD’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp, until they had all perished.
UEB So it happened, when all the men fit for fighting were dead and gone from among the people, BSB BSB: Now when all the fighting men among the people had died,
UEB that Yahweh spoke to me, saying, BSB BSB: the LORD said to me,
UEB 'You are today to pass over Ar, the border of Moab. BSB BSB: “Today you are going to cross the border of Moab at Ar.
UEB (That also is considered to be a land of the Rephaim. The Rephaim lived there previously—but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim— BSB BSB: (That too was regarded as the land of the Rephaim, who used to live there, though the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.
UEB a people as great, as many, and as tall as the Anakim. But Yahweh destroyed them before the Ammonites, and they succeeded them and lived in their place. BSB BSB: They were a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place,
UEB This Yahweh also did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them, and the descendants of Esau succeeded them and have lived in their place even until today. BSB BSB: just as He had done for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day.
The Defeat of Sihon (Numbers 21:21–30)
UEB "'Now rise up, go on your journey, and pass over the Valley of the Arnon; look, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to possess it, and fight with him in battle. BSB BSB: “Arise, set out, and cross the Arnon Valley. See, I have delivered into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle.
UEB Today I will begin to put the fear and terror of you on the peoples that are under the whole sky; they will hear news about you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you.' BSB BSB: This very day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon all the nations under heaven. They will hear the reports of you and tremble in anguish because of you.”
UEB I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, BSB BSB: So from the Wilderness of Kedemoth I sent messengers with an offer of peace to Sihon king of Heshbon, saying,
UEB 'Let me pass through your land; I will go along the highway; I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left. BSB BSB: “Let us pass through your land; we will stay on the main road. We will not turn to the right or to the left.
UEB You will sell me food for money, so that I may eat; give me water for money, so that I may drink; only let me pass through on my feet; BSB BSB: You can sell us food to eat and water to drink in exchange for silver. Only let us pass through on foot,
UEB as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir, and as the Moabites who live in Ar, did for me; until I pass over the Jordan into the land that Yahweh our God is giving us.' BSB BSB: just as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for us, until we cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving us.”
UEB But Sihon, king of Heshbon, would not let us pass by him; for Yahweh your God had hardened his mind and made his heart obstinate, that he might defeat him by your might, which he has now done today. BSB BSB: But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as is the case this day.
UEB Yahweh said to me, 'Look, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you; begin to possess it, in order that you may inherit his land.' BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”
UEB Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz. BSB BSB: So Sihon and his whole army came out for battle against us at Jahaz.
UEB Yahweh our God gave him over to us and we defeated him and his sons and all his people. BSB BSB: And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and his whole army.
UEB We took all his cities at that time and completely destroyed every city—men and the women and the little ones; we left no survivor. BSB BSB: At that time we captured all his cities and devoted to destruction the people of every city, including women and children. We left no survivors.
UEB Only the cattle we took as spoils for ourselves, along with the spoil of the cities that we had taken. BSB BSB: We carried off for ourselves only the livestock and the plunder from the cities we captured.
UEB From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, all the way to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. Yahweh our God gave them into our hands. BSB BSB: From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as Gilead, not one city had walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them.
UEB It was only to the land of the descendants of Ammon that you did not go, as well as all the side of the Jabbok River, and the cities of the hill country—wherever Yahweh our God had forbidden us to go. BSB BSB: But you did not go near the land of the Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or any place that the LORD our God had forbidden.
