The Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22:34–40; Mark 12:28–34)
1 UEB Now these are the commandments, statutes, and decrees that Yahweh your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you might keep them in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess; BSB BSB: These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are about to enter and possess,
2 UEB so that you might honor Yahweh your God, so as to keep all his statutes and commandments that I am commanding you—you, your sons, and your sons' sons, all the days of your lives, so that your days may be prolonged. BSB BSB: so that you and your children and grandchildren may fear the LORD your God all the days of your lives by keeping all His statutes and commandments that I give you, and so that your days may be prolonged.
3 UEB Therefore listen to them, Israel, and keep them, so that it may go well with you, so that you may greatly multiply, in a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you would do. BSB BSB: Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
5 UEB You will love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. BSB BSB: And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
6 UEB The words that I am commanding you today will be in your heart; BSB BSB: These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts.
7 UEB and you will diligently teach them to your children; you will talk about them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up. BSB BSB: And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
8 UEB You will tie them as a sign upon your hand, and they will serve as frontlets between your eyes. BSB BSB: Tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
9 UEB You will write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. BSB BSB: Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.
10 UEB When Yahweh your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, that he would give you, with large and very good cities that you did not build, BSB BSB: And when the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give you—a land with great and splendid cities that you did not build,
11 UEB and houses full of all kinds of good things that you did not make, cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant, you will eat and be satisfied— BSB BSB: with houses full of every good thing with which you did not fill them, with wells that you did not dig, and with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you eat and are satisfied,
12 UEB then be careful so that you do not forget Yahweh, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. BSB BSB: be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
13 UEB You will honor Yahweh your God; him you will worship, and you will swear by his name. BSB BSB: Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.
14 UEB You will not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are all around you— BSB BSB: Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you.
15 UEB for Yahweh your God in the midst of you is a jealous God—if you do, the anger of Yahweh your God will be kindled against you and he will destroy you from the surface of the earth. BSB BSB: For the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth.
16 UEB You will not test Yahweh your God as you tested him at Massah. BSB BSB: Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah.
17 UEB You will diligently keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, his solemn commands, and his statutes, that he has commanded you. BSB BSB: You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God and the testimonies and statutes He has given you.
18 UEB You will do what is right and good in the sight of Yahweh, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land that Yahweh swore to your fathers, BSB BSB: Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that it may be well with you and that you may enter and possess the good land that the LORD your God swore to give your fathers,
19 UEB to drive out all your enemies from before you, as Yahweh has said. BSB BSB: driving out all your enemies before you, as the LORD has said.
Teach Your Children 20 UEB When your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What are the covenant decrees, the statutes, and the other decrees that Yahweh our God commanded you?' BSB BSB: In the future, when your son asks, “What is the meaning of the decrees and statutes and ordinances that the LORD our God has commanded you?”
21 UEB then you will say to your son, 'We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt; Yahweh brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand, BSB BSB: then you are to tell him, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
22 UEB and he displayed signs and wonders, great and severe, on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his house, before our eyes; BSB BSB: Before our eyes the LORD inflicted great and devastating signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his household.
23 UEB and he brought us out from there, so that he might bring us in, to give us the land that he swore to our fathers. BSB BSB: But He brought us out from there to lead us in and give us the land that He had sworn to our fathers.
24 UEB Yahweh commanded us to always keep all these statutes, to fear Yahweh our God for our good, so that he might keep us alive, as we are today. BSB BSB: And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes and to fear the LORD our God, that we may always be prosperous and preserved, as we are to this day.
25 UEB If we keep all these commands before Yahweh our God, as he has commanded us, this will be our righteousness.' BSB BSB: And if we are careful to observe every one of these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us, then that will be our righteousness.”
