Judgment against Idolatry (Deuteronomy 4:15–31; Deuteronomy 12:29–32)
UEB The word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
UEB "Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel and prophesy to them. BSB BSB: “Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them.
UEB Say, 'Mountains of Israel, listen to the word of the Lord Yahweh! The Lord Yahweh says this to the mountains and to the hills, to the streambeds, and to the valleys: Behold! I am bringing a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places. BSB BSB: You are to say: ‘O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD! This is what the Lord GOD says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places.
UEB Then your altars will become desolate and your pillars will be destroyed, and I will throw down your dead in front of their idols. BSB BSB: Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars will be smashed; and I will cast down your slain before your idols.
UEB I will lay the dead bodies of the people of Israel before their idols, and scatter your bones around your altars. BSB BSB: I will lay the corpses of the Israelites before their idols and scatter your bones around your altars.
UEB Everywhere you live, cities will be laid waste and the high places ruined, so that your altars will be laid waste and made desolate. Then they will be broken and disappear, your pillars will be cut down and your works will be wiped away. BSB BSB: Wherever you live, the cities will be laid waste and the high places will be demolished, so that your altars will be laid waste and desecrated, your idols smashed and obliterated, your incense altars cut down, and your works blotted out.
UEB The dead will fall down in your midst and you will know that I am Yahweh. BSB BSB: The slain will fall among you, and you will know that I am the LORD.
A Remnant to Be Blessed 8 UEB But I will preserve a remnant among you, and there will be some who escape the sword among the nations, when you are scattered throughout the countries. BSB BSB: Yet I will leave a remnant, for some of you will escape the sword when you are scattered among the nations and throughout the lands.
UEB Then those who escape will think of me among the nations where they will be held captive, that I was grieved by their promiscuous heart that turned away from me, and by their eyes that whored after their idols. Then they will show loathing on their face for the wickedness which they have committed with all their abominations. BSB BSB: Then in the nations to which they have been carried captive, your survivors will remember Me—how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts that turned away from Me, and by their eyes that lusted after idols. So they will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their abominations.
UEB So they will know that I am Yahweh. It was for a reason that I said I would bring this evil to them. BSB BSB: And they will know that I am the LORD; I did not declare in vain that I would bring this calamity upon them.
UEB The Lord Yahweh says this: Clap your hands and stomp your foot! Say, 'Alas!' because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel! For they will fall by sword, famine, and plague. BSB BSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: Clap your hands, stomp your feet, and cry out “Alas!” because of all the wicked abominations of the house of Israel, who will fall by sword and famine and plague.
UEB The one far away will die by plague, and the one who is near will fall by the sword. Those who remain and survive will die by famine. In this way I will accomplish my fury against them. BSB BSB: He who is far off will die by the plague, he who is near will fall by the sword, and he who remains will die by famine. So I will vent My fury upon them.
UEB Then you will know that I am Yahweh, when their dead lie among their idols, around their altars, on every high hill—on all the mountain peaks, and under every flourishing tree and thick oak—the places where they burned incense to all their idols. BSB BSB: Then you will know that I am the LORD, when their slain lie among their idols around their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, and under every green tree and leafy oak—the places where they offered fragrant incense to all their idols.
UEB I will strike with my hand and make the land desolate and a waste, from the wilderness to Diblah, throughout all the places where they live. Then they will know that I am Yahweh." BSB BSB: I will stretch out My hand against them, and wherever they live I will make the land a desolate waste, from the wilderness to Diblah. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’”
