Sons and Heirs 1 UEB I am saying that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is owner of the entire estate. BSB BSB: What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he is the owner of everything.
UEB But he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by his father. BSB BSB: He is subject to guardians and trustees until the date set by his father.
UEB So also, when we were children, we were enslaved to the elemental principles of the world. BSB BSB: So also, when we were children, we were enslaved under the basic principles of the world.
UEB He did this to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. BSB BSB: to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.
UEB And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, who calls out, "Abba, Father." BSB BSB: And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
UEB So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then you are also an heir through God. BSB BSB: So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, you are also an heir through God.
Paul’s Concern for the Galatians 8 UEB But at that time, when you did not know God, you were made to be slaves to those who are, by their natural powers, not gods at all. BSB BSB: Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.
UEB But now that you have come to know God, or rather that you are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to the weak and worthless elemental principles? Do you want to be enslaved all over again? BSB BSB: But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
UEB You observe days and new moons and seasons and years! BSB BSB: You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!
UEB I am afraid for you that somehow my work with you may have been for nothing. BSB BSB: I fear for you, that my efforts for you may have been in vain.
UEB I beg you, brothers, become like me, for I also have become like you. You did me no wrong. BSB BSB: I beg you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong.
UEB But you know that it was because of a physical illness that I proclaimed the gospel to you the first time. BSB BSB: You know that it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you.
UEB Though my physical condition put you to the test, you did not despise or reject me. Instead you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself. BSB BSB: And although my illness was a trial to you, you did not despise or reject me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus Himself.
UEB Where, then, is your blessing now? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have torn out your own eyes and given them to me. BSB BSB: What then has become of your blessing? For I can testify that, if it were possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.
UEB So then, have I become your enemy because I am telling you the truth? BSB BSB: Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?
UEB They are zealous to win you over, but for no good. They want to shut you out, so you may be zealous for them. BSB BSB: Those people are zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to isolate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them.
UEB It is always good to be zealous for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you. BSB BSB: Nevertheless, it is good to be zealous if it serves a noble purpose—at any time, and not only when I am with you.
UEB My little children, again I am in the pains of childbirth for you until Christ is formed in you. BSB BSB: My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,
UEB I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you. BSB BSB: how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you.
Hagar and Sarah (Genesis 21:9–21)
UEB Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? BSB BSB: Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not understand what the law says?
UEB For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave girl and one by the free woman. BSB BSB: For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.
UEB One was born by the slave girl according to the flesh, but the other was born by the free woman through promise. BSB BSB: His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born through the promise.
UEB These things may be interpreted as an allegory, for these women represent two covenants. One of them is from Mount Sinai and she gives birth to children who are slaves. This is Hagar. BSB BSB: These things serve as illustrations, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children into slavery: This is Hagar.
UEB Now Hagar represents Mount Sinai in Arabia; and she represents the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. BSB BSB: Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.
UEB But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. BSB BSB: But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.
UEB For it is written, "Rejoice, you barren one who does not give birth; cry out and shout for joy, you who are not suffering the pains of childbirth; because the children of the abandoned woman are more numerous than those of the woman who has a husband." BSB BSB: For it is written: “Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have never travailed; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”
UEB But you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. BSB BSB: Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
UEB At that time the one who was born according to the flesh persecuted the one born according to the Spirit. It is the same now. BSB BSB: At that time, however, the son born by the flesh persecuted the son born by the Spirit. It is the same now.
UEB But what does the scripture say? "Send away the slave girl and her son. For the son of the slave girl will not share in the inheritance with the son of the free woman." BSB BSB: But what does the Scripture say? “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
UEB Therefore, brothers, we are not children of a slave girl, but of the free woman. BSB BSB: Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
