Lot Welcomes the Angels (Judges 19:1–30)
UEB The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, while Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. Lot saw them, arose to meet them, and bowed down with his face to the ground. BSB BSB: Now the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown,
UEB He said, "Please my masters, I urge you to turn aside into your servant's house, stay for the night, and wash your feet. Then you can rise up early and go on your way." They replied, "No, we will spend the night in the town square." BSB BSB: and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
UEB But he urged them strongly, so they went with him, and entered into his house. He prepared a meal and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. BSB BSB: But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
UEB But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the men from every part of the city. BSB BSB: Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
UEB They called to Lot, and said to him, "Where are the men that came in to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may sleep with them." BSB BSB: They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”
UEB So Lot went out the door to them and shut the door after himself. BSB BSB: Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.
UEB He said, "I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. BSB BSB: “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!
UEB They said, "Stand back!" They also said, "This one came here to live as a foreigner, and now he has become our judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them." They pressed hard against the man, against Lot, and came near to break down the door. BSB BSB: “Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
UEB But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. BSB BSB: But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
UEB Then Lot's visitors struck with blindness the men who were outside the door of the house, both young and old, so that they became exhausted when they were trying to find the door. BSB BSB: And they struck the men at the entrance, young and old, with blindness, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the door.
Lot Flees to Zoar 12 UEB Then the men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here? Any sons-in-law, your sons and your daughters, and whoever you have in the city, get them out of here. BSB BSB: Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
UEB For we are about to destroy this place, because the accusations against it before Yahweh have become so loud that he has sent us to destroy it." BSB BSB: because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
UEB Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, the men who had promised to marry his daughters, and said, "Quick, get out of this place, for Yahweh is about to destroy the city." But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking. BSB BSB: So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
UEB When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Get going, take your wife and your two daughters that are here, so you are not swept away in the punishment of the city." BSB BSB: At daybreak the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.”
UEB When they had brought them out, one of the men said, "Run for your lives! Do not look back, or stay anywhere on the plain. Escape to the mountains so you are not swept away." BSB BSB: As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
UEB Lot said to them, "No, please, my masters! BSB BSB: But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
UEB Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life, but I cannot escape to the mountains, because the disaster will overtake me, and I will die. BSB BSB: Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
UEB Look, that city over there is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Please, let me escape there (is it not a little one?), and my life will be saved." BSB BSB: Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
UEB He said to him, "Alright, I am granting this request also, that I will not destroy the city which you have mentioned. BSB BSB: “Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate.
UEB Hurry! Escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there." Therefore the city was called Zoar. BSB BSB: Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
UEB The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot reached Zoar. BSB BSB: And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.
The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:20–37)
UEB He destroyed those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and the plants that grew on the ground. BSB BSB: Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.
UEB But Lot's wife, who was behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. BSB BSB: But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
UEB Abraham got up early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before Yahweh. BSB BSB: Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD.
UEB He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the plain. He looked and behold, smoke was rising from the land like the smoke of a furnace. BSB BSB: He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.
UEB So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, God called Abraham to mind. He sent Lot out of the midst of the destruction when he destroyed the cities in which Lot had lived. BSB BSB: So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived.
Lot and His Daughters 32 UEB Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will sleep with him, so that we may extend our father's line." BSB BSB: Come, let us get our father drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
UEB So they made their father drink wine that night. Then the firstborn went in and slept with her father; he did not know when she lay down, nor when she arose. BSB BSB: So that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
UEB The next day the firstborn said to the younger, "Listen, last night I slept with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you should go in and sleep with him, so that we may extend our father's line." BSB BSB: The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let us get him drunk with wine again tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
UEB So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger went and slept with him. He did not know when she lay down, nor when she arose. BSB BSB: So again that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
UEB So both the daughters of Lot were pregnant by their father. BSB BSB: Thus both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.
UEB The firstborn gave birth to a son, and named him Moab. He became the ancestor of the Moabites of today. BSB BSB: The older daughter gave birth to a son and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today.
UEB As for the younger daughter, she also gave birth to a son, and named him Ben-Ammi. He became the ancestor of the people of Ammon of today. BSB BSB: The younger daughter also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites of today.
