Cain and Abel (Hebrews 11:4)
UEB The man slept with Eve his wife. She conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have produced a man with Yahweh's help." BSB BSB: And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
UEB Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd, but Cain cultivated the soil. BSB BSB: Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.
UEB It came about that in the course of time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground as an offering to Yahweh. BSB BSB: So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD,
UEB As for Abel, he brought some of the firstborn of his flock and some of the fat. Yahweh accepted Abel and his offering, BSB BSB: while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
UEB but Cain and his offering he did not accept. So Cain was very angry, and he scowled. BSB BSB: but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
UEB Yahweh said to Cain, "Why are you angry and why are you scowling? BSB BSB: “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?
UEB If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin crouches at the door and desires to control you, but you must rule over it." BSB BSB: If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
UEB Cain spoke to Abel his brother. It came about that while they were in the fields, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. BSB BSB: Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
UEB Then Yahweh said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
UEB Yahweh said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood is calling out to me from the ground. BSB BSB: “What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
UEB Now cursed are you from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. BSB BSB: Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
UEB When you cultivate the ground, from now on it will not yield to you its strength. A fugitive and a wanderer you will be in the earth." BSB BSB: When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
UEB Cain said to Yahweh, "My punishment is greater than I can bear. BSB BSB: But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
UEB Indeed, you have driven me out this day from this ground, and I will be hidden from your face. I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." BSB BSB: Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
UEB Yahweh said to him, "If anyone kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." Then Yahweh put a mark on Cain, so that if anyone found him, that person would not attack him. BSB BSB: “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.
UEB So Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh and lived in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. BSB BSB: So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
The Descendants of Cain 17 UEB Cain slept with his wife and she conceived. She gave birth to Enoch. He built a city and named it after his son Enoch. BSB BSB: And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
UEB To Enoch was born Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech. BSB BSB: Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
UEB Lamech took for himself two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah. BSB BSB: And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
UEB Adah gave birth to Jabal. He was the father of those who lived in tents who have livestock. BSB BSB: Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock.
UEB His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of those who play the harp and pipe. BSB BSB: And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
UEB As for Zillah, she bore Tubal-Cain, the forger of tools of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah. BSB BSB: And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
UEB Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say. For I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me. BSB BSB: Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
UEB If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times." BSB BSB: If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
Seth and Enosh 25 UEB Adam slept with his wife again, and she bore another son. She called his name Seth and said, "God has given me another son in the place of Abel, for Cain killed him." BSB BSB: And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
UEB A son was born to Seth and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of Yahweh. BSB BSB: And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
