A Warning to the Rich (Proverbs 23:1–5; 1 Timothy 6:17–19)
UEB Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail because of the miseries coming on you. BSB BSB: Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you.
UEB Your riches have rotted, and your clothes have become moth-eaten. BSB BSB: Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.
UEB Your gold and your silver have become tarnished and their rust will be a witness against you. It will consume your flesh like fire. You have stored up your treasure for the last days. BSB BSB: Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days.
UEB Look, the pay of the laborers is crying out—the pay that you have withheld from those who harvested your fields, and the cries of the harvesters have gone into the ears of the Lord of hosts. BSB BSB: Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
UEB You have lived in luxury on the earth and indulged yourselves. You have fattened your hearts for a day of slaughter. BSB BSB: You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter.
UEB You have condemned and killed the righteous person. He does not resist you. BSB BSB: You have condemned and murdered the righteous, who did not resist you.
Patience in Suffering (Job 1:1–5)
UEB So be patient, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See, the farmer awaits the valuable harvest from the ground. He is patiently waiting for it, until it receives the early and late rains. BSB BSB: Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains.
UEB You, too, be patient. Make your hearts strong, because the Lord's coming is near. BSB BSB: You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.
UEB Do not complain, brothers, against one another, so that you will be not judged. See, the judge is standing at the door. BSB BSB: Do not complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door!
UEB Take an example, brothers, from the suffering and patience of the prophets, those who spoke in the name of the Lord. BSB BSB: Brothers, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
UEB See, we regard those who endured as blessed. You have heard of the endurance of Job, and you know the purpose of the Lord, how he is very compassionate and merciful. BSB BSB: See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
UEB Above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by the earth, or by any other oath. Instead, let your "Yes" mean "Yes" and your "No" mean "No," so you do not fall under judgment. BSB BSB: Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth or by any other oath. Simply let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, so that you will not fall under judgment.
The Prayer of Faith 13 UEB Is anyone among you suffering hardship? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. BSB BSB: Is any one of you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.
UEB The prayer of faith will heal the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, God will forgive him. BSB BSB: And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
UEB So confess your sins to one another, and pray for each other, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very strong in its working. BSB BSB: Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.
UEB Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain in the land for three years and six months. BSB BSB: Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
UEB Then Elijah prayed again. The heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. BSB BSB: Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth yielded its crops.
Restoring a Sinner 19 UEB My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone brings him back, BSB BSB: My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back,
UEB that person should know that whoever turns a sinner from his wandering way will save him from death, and will cover over a great number of sins. BSB BSB: consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
