The Sovereignty of God 1 UEB "Hear the word that Yahweh is announcing to you, house of Israel. BSB BSB: Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.
UEB For the religious customs of these people are worthless. They cut down a tree in the forest, and the craftsman carves the wood. BSB BSB: For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut down a tree from the forest; it is shaped with a chisel by the hands of a craftsman.
UEB Then they decorate it with silver and gold. They strengthen it with hammer and nails so it will not fall over. BSB BSB: They adorn it with silver and gold and fasten it with hammer and nails, so that it will not totter.
UEB What they make with their hands is like scarecrows in a cucumber field, because they, too, can say nothing, and they have to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they cannot bring about evil, nor are they able to do anything good.'" BSB BSB: Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no harm, and neither can they do any good.”
UEB There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in power. BSB BSB: There is none like You, O LORD. You are great, and Your name is mighty in power.
UEB Who does not fear you, king of the nations? For this is what you deserve, for there is no one like you among all the wise men of the nations or all their royal kingdoms. BSB BSB: Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due. For among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like You.
UEB They are all the same, they are brutish and stupid, disciples of idols that are nothing but wood. BSB BSB: But they are altogether senseless and foolish, instructed by worthless idols made of wood!
UEB They bring hammered silver from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz made by artificers, the hands of refiners. Their clothes are blue and purple cloth. Their skillful men made all of these things. BSB BSB: Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz—the work of a craftsman from the hands of a goldsmith. Their clothes are blue and purple, all fashioned by skilled workers.
UEB But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God and eternal king. The earth quakes at his anger, and the nations cannot endure his anger. BSB BSB: But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King. The earth quakes at His wrath, and the nations cannot endure His indignation.
UEB You will speak to them like this, "The gods that did not make the heavens and earth will perish from the earth and from under these heavens." BSB BSB: Thus you are to tell them: “These gods, who have made neither the heavens nor the earth, will perish from this earth and from under these heavens.”
UEB But it was he who made the earth by his power, and he established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding he stretched out the heavens. BSB BSB: The LORD made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.
UEB His voice makes the roar of waters in the heavens, and he brings up the mists from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and sends out wind from his storehouse. BSB BSB: When He thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the lightning with the rain and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.
UEB Every man has become ignorant, without knowledge. Every metalworker is put to shame by his idols. For his cast images are frauds; there is no life in them. BSB BSB: Every man is senseless and devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols. For his molten images are a fraud, and there is no breath in them.
UEB They are useless, the work of mockers; they will perish at the time of their punishment. BSB BSB: They are worthless, a work to be mocked. In the time of their punishment they will perish.
UEB But God, the portion of Jacob, is not like these, for he is the molder of all things. Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; Yahweh of hosts is his name. BSB BSB: The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance—the LORD of Hosts is His name.
The Coming Captivity of Judah 17 UEB Gather your bundle and leave the land, you people who have been living under the siege. BSB BSB: Gather up your belongings from this land, you who live under siege.
UEB For Yahweh says this, "See, I am about to throw the inhabitants of the land out this time. I will cause them distress, and they will find it to be so." BSB BSB: For this is what the LORD says: “Behold, at this time I will sling out the inhabitants of the land and bring distress upon them so that they may be captured.”
UEB Woe to me! Because of my broken bones, my wound is infected. So I said, "Surely this is agony, but I must bear it." BSB BSB: Woe to me because of my brokenness; my wound is grievous! But I said, “This is truly my sickness, and I must bear it.”
UEB My tent is devastated, and all of my tent cords are cut in two. They have taken my children away from me, so they no longer exist. There is no longer anyone to spread out my tent or to raise up my tent curtains. BSB BSB: My tent is destroyed, and all its ropes are snapped. My sons have departed from me and are no more. I have no one left to pitch my tent or set up my curtains.
UEB For the shepherds are stupid and they do not seek Yahweh; so they have not prospered, and all their flock has been scattered. BSB BSB: For the shepherds have become senseless; they do not seek the LORD. Therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.
UEB The report of news has arrived, "See! It is coming, a great earthquake is coming from the land of the north To make the cities of Judah into ruins, hideouts for jackals." BSB BSB: Listen! The sound of a report is coming—a great commotion from the land to the north. It will make the cities of Judah a desolation, a haunt for jackals.
UEB I know, Yahweh, that the way of a man does not come from himself. No person walking directs his own steps. BSB BSB: I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not his own; no one who walks directs his own steps.
UEB Discipline me, Yahweh, with justice, not in your anger or you would destroy me. BSB BSB: Correct me, O LORD, but only with justice—not in Your anger, or You will bring me to nothing.
UEB Pour your fury on the nations that do not know you and on the families that do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob and consumed him so as to completely destroy him and demolish his habitation. BSB BSB: Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You, and on the families that do not call on Your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have consumed him and finished him off; they have devastated his homeland.
