Disaster Predicted 1 UEB Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
3 UEB For Yahweh says this to the sons and daughters who are born in this place, to the mothers who bear them, and to the fathers who caused them to be born in this land, BSB BSB: For this is what the LORD says concerning the sons and daughters born in this place, and the mothers who bore them, and the fathers who fathered them in this land:
4 UEB 'They will die diseased deaths. They will not be mourned or buried. They will be like dung on the ground. For they will come to an end by sword and famine, and their corpses will be food for the birds of the skies and the beasts of the earth.' BSB BSB: “They will die from deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried, but will lie like dung on the ground. They will be finished off by sword and famine, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and beasts of the earth.”
5 UEB For the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 'Do not enter a house where there is mourning. Do not go to mourn or to show sympathy for them, for I have taken away my peace from this people—this is Yahweh's declaration—and my steadfast love and mercy. BSB BSB: Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Do not enter a house where there is a funeral meal. Do not go to mourn or show sympathy, for I have removed from this people My peace, My loving devotion, and My compassion,” declares the LORD.
6 UEB Both the great and the small will die in this land. They will not be buried, and no one will mourn for them or cut themselves or shave their heads for them. BSB BSB: “Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried or mourned, nor will anyone cut himself or shave his head for them.
7 UEB No one must share any food in mourning to comfort them because of the deaths, and none must give a comforting cup to his father or his mother in order to comfort them. BSB BSB: No food will be offered to comfort those who mourn the dead; not even a cup of consolation will be given for the loss of a father or mother.
8 UEB You must not go to a banquet house to sit with them in order to eat or drink.' BSB BSB: You must not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down with them to eat and drink.
9 UEB For Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, says this, 'See, before your eyes, in your days and in this place, I am about to put an end to the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the sound of the groom and the sound of the bride.' BSB BSB: For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am going to remove from this place, before your very eyes and in your days, the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of the bride and bridegroom.
10 UEB Then it will happen that you will report all these words to this people, and they will say to you, 'Why has Yahweh decreed all this great disaster against us? What is our iniquity and sin that we sinned against Yahweh our God?' BSB BSB: When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great disaster against us? What is our iniquity? What is the sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’
11 UEB So say to them, 'Because your ancestors abandoned me—this is Yahweh's declaration—and they went after other gods and worshiped and bowed down to them. They abandoned me and have not kept my law. BSB BSB: Then you are to answer them: ‘It is because your fathers have forsaken Me, declares the LORD, and followed other gods, and served and worshiped them. They abandoned Me and did not keep My instruction.
12 UEB But you yourselves have brought about more wickedness than your ancestors, for see, each person is walking by the stubbornness of his wicked heart; there is no one who listens to me. BSB BSB: And you have done more evil than your fathers. See how each of you follows the stubbornness of his evil heart instead of obeying Me.
13 UEB So I will throw you from this land to a land that you have not known, neither you nor your ancestors, and you will worship other gods there by day and night, for I will not give any favor to you.' BSB BSB: So I will cast you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’
God Will Restore Israel 14 UEB Therefore, behold, the days are coming—this is Yahweh's declaration—when it will no longer be said, 'As Yahweh lives, the one who brought up the people of Israel from the land of Egypt.' BSB BSB: Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt.’
15 UEB but, 'As Yahweh lives, the one who brought up the people of Israel from the land of the north and from the lands where he had scattered them.' For I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their ancestors. BSB BSB: Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ For I will return them to their land that I gave to their forefathers.
16 UEB Behold! I will send for many fishermen—this is Yahweh's declaration—so they will fish the people out. After this I will send for many hunters so they will hunt for them among all the mountains and hills, and in rock crevices. BSB BSB: But for now I will send for many fishermen, declares the LORD, and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill, even from the clefts of the rocks.
17 UEB For my eye is on all their ways; they cannot be hidden from before me. Their iniquity cannot be concealed from before my eyes. BSB BSB: For My eyes are on all their ways. They are not hidden from My face, and their guilt is not concealed from My eyes.
18 UEB I will first pay back double for their iniquity and sin for their polluting of my land with their disgusting idol figures, and for their filling my inheritance with their disgusting idols." BSB BSB: And I will first repay them double their iniquity and their sin, because they have defiled My land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and they have filled My inheritance with their abominations.”
19 UEB Yahweh, you are my stronghold and my refuge, my place of safety in the day of distress. The nations will go to you from the ends of the earth and say, "Surely our ancestors inherited deceit. They are empty; there is no profit in them. BSB BSB: O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.
20 UEB Do people make gods for themselves? But they are not gods." BSB BSB: Can man make gods for himself? Such are not gods!”
21 UEB Therefore see! I will cause them to know in this time, I will cause them to know my hand and my power, so they will know that Yahweh is my name. BSB BSB: “Therefore behold, I will inform them, and this time I will make them know My power and My might; then they will know that My name is the LORD.
