Jonah’s Prayer 1 UEB Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God from the fish's stomach. BSB BSB: From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
2 UEB He said, "I called out to Yahweh about my distress and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help! You heard my voice. BSB BSB: saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.
3 UEB You had thrown me into the depths, into the heart of the seas, and the currents surrounded me; all your waves and billows passed over me. BSB BSB: For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
4 UEB I said, 'I am driven out from before your eyes; yet I will again look toward your holy temple.' BSB BSB: At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
5 UEB The waters closed around me up to my neck; the deep was all around me; seaweed wrapped around my head. BSB BSB: The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.
6 UEB I went down to the bases of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed upon me forever. Yet you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh, my God! BSB BSB: To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
7 UEB When my soul fainted within me, I called Yahweh to mind; then my prayer came to you, to your holy temple. BSB BSB: As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
8 UEB They give attention to useless gods while they forsake loving faithfulness. BSB BSB: Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.
9 UEB But as for me, I will sacrifice to you with a voice of thanksgiving; I will fulfill that which I have vowed. Salvation comes from Yahweh!" BSB BSB: But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
10 UEB Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited up Jonah upon the dry land. BSB BSB: And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
