A Greeting from Jude (James 1:1)
UEB Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ: BSB BSB: Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ:
UEB May mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you. BSB BSB: Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
God’s Judgment on the Ungodly (2 Peter 3:1–7)
UEB For certain men have slipped in secretly among you. These are men who were marked out for condemnation. They are ungodly men who have changed the grace of our God into sensuality, and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
UEB Now I wish to remind you—although once you fully knew it—that the Lord saved a people out of the land of Egypt, but that afterward he destroyed those who did not believe. BSB BSB: Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.
UEB Also angels who did not keep to their own position of authority, but who left their proper dwelling place—God has kept them in everlasting chains, in utter darkness, for the judgment on the great day. BSB BSB: And the angels who did not stay within their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day.
UEB It is just like Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, which also indulged themselves in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desires. They were displayed as examples of those who suffer the punishment in eternal fire. BSB BSB: In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
UEB Yet in the same way, these dreamers also pollute their bodies. They reject authority, and they say slanderous things against the glorious ones. BSB BSB: Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings.
UEB But even Michael the archangel, when he was arguing with the devil and disputing with him about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous judgment against him. Instead he said, "May the Lord rebuke you!" BSB BSB: But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
UEB But these people slander whatever they do not understand, and what they do understand—what unreasoning animals know by instinct—these are what destroy them. BSB BSB: These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively.
UEB Woe to them! For they have walked in the way of Cain and have plunged into Balaam's error for profit. They have perished in Korah's rebellion. BSB BSB: Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed for profit into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.
UEB These are the ones who are hidden reefs in your love feasts, when they feast with you shamelessly—shepherds who only feed themselves. They are clouds without rain, carried along by winds. They are autumn trees without fruit—twice dead, torn up by the roots. BSB BSB: These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.
UEB They are violent waves in the sea, foaming out their own shame. They are wandering stars, for whom the gloom of thick darkness has been reserved forever. BSB BSB: They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.
UEB He is coming to execute judgment on everyone. He is coming to convict all the ungodly of all the works they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh words that ungodly sinners have spoken against him." BSB BSB: to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.”
UEB These are grumblers, complainers, who follow their evil desires. They are loud boasters, who, for their own advantage, flatter others. BSB BSB: These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage.
A Call to Persevere (Hebrews 10:19–39; 2 Peter 3:1–7)
UEB But you, beloved, remember the words that were spoken in the past by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: But you, beloved, remember what was foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ
UEB They said to you, "In the last time there will be mockers who will follow their own ungodly desires." BSB BSB: when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”
UEB It is these who cause divisions; they are worldly and they do not have the Spirit. BSB BSB: These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly and devoid of the Spirit.
UEB But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith, and pray in the Holy Spirit. BSB BSB: But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
UEB Keep yourselves in God's love, and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that brings you eternal life. BSB BSB: keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life.
UEB Be merciful to those who doubt. BSB BSB: And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt;
UEB Save others by snatching them out of the fire. To others be merciful with fear. Hate even the garment stained by the flesh. BSB BSB: save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.
Doxology (Romans 16:25–27)
UEB Now to the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and to cause you to stand before his glorious presence without blemish and with great joy, BSB BSB: Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished in His glorious presence, with great joy—
UEB to the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and power, before all time, now, and forevermore. Amen. BSB BSB: to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen.
