UEB They called out, "Why, Yahweh, God of Israel, has this happened to Israel, that one of our tribes should be missing today?" BSB BSB: “Why, O LORD God of Israel,” they cried out, “has this happened in Israel? Today in Israel one tribe is missing!”
UEB The next day the people got up early and built an altar there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. BSB BSB: The next day the people got up early, built an altar there, and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings.
UEB The people of Israel said, "Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to Yahweh?" For they had made an important promise concerning anyone who did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah. They said, "He would certainly be put to death." BSB BSB: The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at Mizpah would surely be put to death.
UEB The people of Israel had compassion for their brother Benjamin. They said, "Today one tribe has been cut off from Israel. BSB BSB: And the Israelites grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites, and said, “Today a tribe is cut off from Israel.
UEB Who will provide wives for those who are left, since we have made a promise to Yahweh that we will not let any of them marry our daughters?" BSB BSB: What should we do about wives for the survivors, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them our daughters in marriage?”
UEB They said, "Which of the tribes of Israel did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah?" It was found that no one had come to the assembly from Jabesh Gilead. BSB BSB: So they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to come up before the LORD at Mizpah?” And, in fact, no one from Jabesh-gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
UEB For when the people were set out in an orderly manner, behold, none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead were there. BSB BSB: For when the people were counted, none of the residents of Jabesh-gilead were there.
UEB The assembly sent twelve thousand of their bravest men with instructions to go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, including the women and children. BSB BSB: So the congregation sent 12,000 of their most valiant men and commanded them: “Go and put to the sword those living in Jabesh-gilead, including women and children.
UEB "Do this: You must kill every male and every woman who has slept with a man." BSB BSB: This is what you are to do: Devote to destruction every male, as well as every female who has had relations with a man.”
UEB The men found among those living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh, in Canaan. BSB BSB: So they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young women who had not had relations with a man, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.
UEB The entire assembly sent a message and told the people of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon that they were offering them peace. BSB BSB: Then the whole congregation sent a message of peace to the Benjamites who were at the rock of Rimmon.
UEB The Benjamites returned at that time and they were given the women of Jabesh Gilead, but there were not enough women for all of them. BSB BSB: And at that time the Benjamites returned and were given the women who were spared from Jabesh-gilead. But there were not enough women for all of them.
UEB The people were sorry for what happened to Benjamin, because Yahweh made a division between the tribes of Israel. BSB BSB: The people grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a void in the tribes of Israel.
UEB Then the leaders of the assembly said, "How will we arrange wives for the Benjamites who are left, since the women of Benjamin have been killed?" BSB BSB: Then the elders of the congregation said, “What should we do about wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?”
UEB They said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe is not destroyed from Israel. BSB BSB: They added, “There must be heirs for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out.
UEB We cannot give them wives from our daughters, for the people of Israel had made a promise, 'Cursed be anyone who gives a wife to Benjamin.'" BSB BSB: But we cannot give them our daughters as wives.” For the Israelites had sworn, “Cursed is he who gives a wife to a Benjamite.”
UEB So they said, "You know there is a feast for Yahweh every year at Shiloh (which is north of Bethel, east of the road that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah)." BSB BSB: “But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in Shiloh, which is north of Bethel east of the road that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”

UEB When their fathers or their brothers come to protest to us, we will say to them, 'Show us favor! Let them remain because we did not get wives for each man during the war. You are innocent, since you did not give your daughters to them.'" BSB BSB: When their fathers or brothers come to us to complain, we will tell them, ‘Do us a favor by helping them, since we did not get wives for each of them in the war. Since you did not actually give them your daughters, you have no guilt.’”
UEB The people of Benjamin did so. They took the number of wives that they needed from the girls who were dancing and they carried them off to be their wives. They went and returned to the place of their inheritance. They rebuilt the towns and lived in them. BSB BSB: The Benjamites did as instructed and carried away the number of women they needed from the dancers they caught. They went back to their own inheritance, rebuilt their cities, and settled in them.
UEB Then the people of Israel left that place and went home, each one to his own tribe and clan, and each one to his own inheritance. BSB BSB: And at that time, each of the Israelites returned from there to his own tribe and clan, each to his own inheritance.
