Cleansing from Skin Diseases (Matthew 8:1–4; Mark 1:40–45; Luke 5:12–16)
UEB Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
UEB "This will be the law for the diseased person on the day of his cleansing. He must be brought to the priest. BSB BSB: “This is the law for the one afflicted with a skin disease on the day of his cleansing, when he is brought to the priest.
UEB The priest will go out of the camp to examine the person to see if the infectious skin disease is healed. BSB BSB: The priest is to go outside the camp to examine him, and if the skin disease of the afflicted person has healed,
UEB Then the priest will command that the one to be cleansed must take two live, clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop. BSB BSB: the priest shall order that two live clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop be brought for the one to be cleansed.
UEB The priest will command him to kill one of the birds over fresh water that is in a clay pot. BSB BSB: Then the priest shall command that one of the birds be slaughtered over fresh water in a clay pot.
UEB The priest will then take the live bird and the cedar wood, and the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, and he will dip all these things, including the live bird, in the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. BSB BSB: And he is to take the live bird together with the cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop, and dip them into the blood of the bird that was slaughtered over the fresh water.
UEB Then the priest will sprinkle this water seven times onto the person who is to be cleansed from the disease, and then the priest will pronounce him to be clean. Then the priest will release the living bird into the open fields. BSB BSB: Seven times he shall sprinkle the one to be cleansed of the skin disease. Then he shall pronounce him clean and release the live bird into the open field.
UEB The person who is being cleansed will wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and bathe himself in water, and then he will be clean. After that he must come into the camp, but he will live outside his tent for seven days. BSB BSB: The one being cleansed must wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and bathe with water; then he will be ceremonially clean. Afterward, he may enter the camp, but he must remain outside his tent for seven days.
UEB On the seventh day he must shave all his hair off his head, and he must also shave off his beard and eyebrows. He must shave off all his hair, and he must wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; then he will be clean. BSB BSB: On the seventh day he must shave off all his hair—his head, his beard, his eyebrows, and the rest of his hair. He must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water, and he will be clean.
UEB On the eighth day he must take two male lambs without blemish, one female lamb a year old without blemish, and three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and one log of oil. BSB BSB: On the eighth day he is to bring two unblemished male lambs, an unblemished ewe lamb a year old, a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with olive oil, and one log of olive oil.
UEB The priest who cleanses him will stand the person who is to be cleansed, along with those things, before Yahweh at the entrance to the tent of meeting. BSB BSB: The priest who performs the cleansing shall present the one to be cleansed, together with these offerings, before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
UEB The priest will take one of the male lambs and offer it as a guilt offering, together with the log of oil; he will wave them for a wave offering before Yahweh. BSB BSB: Then the priest is to take one of the male lambs and present it as a guilt offering, along with the log of olive oil; and he must wave them as a wave offering before the LORD.
UEB He must kill the male lamb in the place where they kill the sin offerings and the burnt offerings, in the area of the tabernacle, for the sin offering belongs to the priest, as does the guilt offering, because it is most holy. BSB BSB: Then he is to slaughter the lamb in the sanctuary area where the sin offering and burnt offering are slaughtered. Like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest; it is most holy.
UEB The priest will take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the tip of the right ear of the person who is to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. BSB BSB: The priest is to take some of the blood from the guilt offering and put it on the right earlobe of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.
UEB Then the priest will take oil from the log and pour it into the palm of his own left hand, BSB BSB: Then the priest shall take some of the log of olive oil, pour it into his left palm,
UEB and dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand, and sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before Yahweh. BSB BSB: dip his right forefinger into the oil in his left palm, and sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before the LORD.
UEB The priest will put the rest of the oil in his hand on the tip of the right ear of the person to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. He must put this oil on top of the blood from the guilt offering. BSB BSB: And the priest is to put some of the oil remaining in his palm on the right earlobe of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering.
UEB As for the rest of the oil that is in the priest's hand, he will put it on the head of the person who is to be cleansed, and the priest will make atonement for him before Yahweh. BSB BSB: The rest of the oil in his palm, the priest is to put on the head of the one to be cleansed, to make atonement for him before the LORD.
UEB Then the priest will offer the sin offering and make atonement for him who is to be cleansed because of his uncleanness, and afterward he will kill the burnt offering. BSB BSB: Then the priest is to sacrifice the sin offering and make atonement for the one to be cleansed from his uncleanness. After that, the priest shall slaughter the burnt offering
UEB Then the priest will offer the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. The priest will make atonement for the person, and then he will be clean. BSB BSB: and offer it on the altar, with the grain offering, to make atonement for him, and he will be clean.
UEB However, if the person is poor and cannot afford these sacrifices, then he may take one male lamb as a guilt offering to be waved, to make atonement for himself, and one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and a log of oil, BSB BSB: If, however, the person is poor and cannot afford these offerings, he is to take one male lamb as a guilt offering to be waved to make atonement for him, along with a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, a log of olive oil,
UEB together with two doves or two young pigeons, such as he is able to get; one bird will be a sin offering and the other a burnt offering. BSB BSB: and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he can afford, one to be a sin offering and the other a burnt offering.
UEB On the eighth day he must bring them for his cleansing to the priest, to the entrance to the tent of meeting, before Yahweh. BSB BSB: On the eighth day he is to bring them for his cleansing to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD.
UEB The priest will take the lamb for an offering, and he will take with it the log of olive oil, and he will lift them high as he presents them to Yahweh. BSB BSB: The priest shall take the lamb for the guilt offering, along with the log of olive oil, and wave them as a wave offering before the LORD.
UEB He will kill the lamb for the guilt offering, and he will take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the tip of the right ear of the one who is to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. BSB BSB: And after he slaughters the lamb for the guilt offering, the priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the right earlobe of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.
UEB Then the priest will pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand, BSB BSB: Then the priest is to pour some of the oil into his left palm
UEB and he will sprinkle with his right finger some of the oil that is in his left hand seven times before Yahweh. BSB BSB: and sprinkle with his right forefinger some of the oil in his left palm seven times before the LORD.
UEB The priest will then put some of the oil that is in his hand on the tip of the right ear of the one who is to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, the same places where he put the blood of the guilt offering. BSB BSB: The priest shall also put some of the oil in his palm on the right earlobe of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot—on the same places as the blood of the guilt offering.
UEB He will put the rest of the oil that is in his hand on the head of the one who is to be cleansed, to make atonement for him before Yahweh. BSB BSB: The rest of the oil in his palm, the priest is to put on the head of the one to be cleansed, to make atonement for him before the LORD.
UEB He must offer one of the doves or young pigeons, such as the person has been able to get— BSB BSB: Then he must sacrifice the turtledoves or young pigeons, whichever he can afford,
UEB one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, along with the grain offering. Then the priest will make atonement for the one who is to be cleansed before Yahweh. BSB BSB: one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, together with the grain offering. In this way the priest will make atonement before the LORD for the one to be cleansed.
UEB This is the law for a person in whom there is an infectious skin disease, who is not able to afford the standard offerings for his cleansing." BSB BSB: This is the law for someone who has a skin disease and cannot afford the cost of his cleansing.”
Signs of Home Contamination 33 UEB Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
UEB "When you have come into the land of Canaan which I gave to you as a possession, and if I put mildew that spreads in a house in the land of your possession, BSB BSB: “When you enter the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, and I put a contamination of mildew into a house in that land,
UEB then he who owns the house must come and tell the priest. He must say, 'There seems to me to be something like mildew in my house.' BSB BSB: the owner of the house shall come and tell the priest, ‘Something like mildew has appeared in my house.’
UEB Then the priest will command that they empty the house before he goes in to see the evidence of mildew, so that nothing in the house will be made unclean. Afterward the priest must go in to see the house. BSB BSB: The priest must order that the house be cleared before he enters it to examine the mildew, so that nothing in the house will become unclean. After this, the priest shall go in to inspect the house.
UEB He must examine the mildew to see if it is in the house walls, and to see whether it appears greenish or reddish in the depressions in the wall's surface. BSB BSB: He is to examine the house, and if the mildew on the walls consists of green or red depressions that appear to be beneath the surface of the wall,
UEB If the house does have mildew, then the priest will go out of the house and shut the door to the house for seven days. BSB BSB: the priest shall go outside the doorway of the house and close it up for seven days.
UEB Then the priest will return again on the seventh day and examine it to see if the mildew has spread in the walls of the house. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest is to return and inspect the house. If the mildew has spread on the walls,
UEB If it has, then the priest will command that they take out the stones in which the mildew has been found and throw them into an unclean place outside the city. BSB BSB: he must order that the contaminated stones be pulled out and thrown into an unclean place outside the city.
UEB He will require all the inside walls of the house to be scraped, and they must take the contaminated material that is scraped off outside the city and dump it into the unclean place. BSB BSB: And he shall have the inside of the house scraped completely and the plaster that is scraped off dumped into an unclean place outside the city.
UEB They must take other stones and put them in the place of the stones that were removed, and they must use new clay to plaster the house. BSB BSB: So different stones must be obtained to replace the contaminated ones, as well as additional mortar to replaster the house.
UEB If mildew comes again and breaks out in the house in which the stones have been taken away and the walls have been scraped and then replastered, BSB BSB: If the mildew reappears in the house after the stones have been torn out and the house has been scraped and replastered,
UEB then the priest must come in and examine the house to see if mildew has spread in the house. If it has, then it is harmful mildew, and the house is unclean. BSB BSB: the priest must come and inspect it. If the mildew has spread in the house, it is a destructive mildew; the house is unclean.
UEB The house must be torn down. The stones, timber, and all the plaster in the house must be carried away out of the city to the unclean place. BSB BSB: It must be torn down with its stones, its timbers, and all its plaster, and taken outside the city to an unclean place.
UEB In addition, whoever goes into the house during the time it is closed up will be unclean until evening. BSB BSB: Anyone who enters the house during any of the days that it is closed up will be unclean until evening.
UEB Anyone who slept in the house must wash his clothes, and anyone who ate in the house must wash his clothes. BSB BSB: And anyone who sleeps in the house or eats in it must wash his clothes.
Cleansing a Home 48 UEB If the priest enters the house to examine it to see whether the mildew has spread in the house after the house was plastered, then, if the mildew is gone, he will pronounce the house clean. BSB BSB: If, however, the priest comes and inspects it, and the mildew has not spread after the house has been replastered, he shall pronounce the house clean, because the mildew is gone.
UEB Then the priest must take two birds to cleanse the house, and cedar wood, and scarlet yarn, and hyssop. BSB BSB: He is to take two birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop to purify the house;
UEB He will kill one of the birds over fresh water in a clay jar. BSB BSB: and he shall slaughter one of the birds over fresh water in a clay pot.
UEB He will take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet yarn, and the live bird, and dip them in the blood of the killed bird, into the fresh water, and sprinkle the house seven times. BSB BSB: Then he shall take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet yarn, and the live bird, dip them in the blood of the slaughtered bird and the fresh water, and sprinkle the house seven times.
UEB He will cleanse the house with the blood of the bird and with the fresh water, with the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the scarlet yarn. BSB BSB: And he shall cleanse the house with the bird’s blood, the fresh water, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the scarlet yarn.
UEB But he will let the live bird go out of the city into the open fields. In this way he must make atonement for the house, and it will be clean. BSB BSB: Finally, he is to release the live bird into the open fields outside the city. In this way he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.
UEB This is the law for all types of infectious skin disease and things that cause such disease, and for an itch, BSB BSB: This is the law for any infectious skin disease, for a scaly outbreak,
UEB and for mildew in clothing and in a house, BSB BSB: for mildew in clothing or in a house,
UEB for swelling, for a rash, and for a bright spot, BSB BSB: and for a swelling, rash, or spot,
UEB to determine when any of these cases is unclean or when it is clean. This is the law for infectious skin diseases and mildew." BSB BSB: to determine when something is clean or unclean. This is the law regarding skin diseases and mildew.”
