Additional Blessings of Obedience 1 UEB "You must make no idols, and you must not lift up a carved figure or a sacred stone pillar, and you must not place any carved stone image in your land to which you bow down, for I am Yahweh your God. BSB BSB: “You must not make idols for yourselves or set up a carved image or sacred pillar; you must not place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down to it. For I am the LORD your God.
2 UEB You must keep my Sabbaths and honor my sanctuary. I am Yahweh. BSB BSB: You must keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary. I am the LORD.
3 UEB If you walk in my laws and keep my commandments and obey them, BSB BSB: If you follow My statutes and carefully keep My commandments,
4 UEB then I will give you rain in its season; the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will yield their fruit. BSB BSB: I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.
5 UEB Your threshing will continue to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will extend to the planting season. You will eat your bread to the full and live safely where you make your home in the land. BSB BSB: Your threshing will continue until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will continue until sowing time; you will have your fill of food to eat and will dwell securely in your land.
6 UEB I will give peace in the land; you will lie down with nothing to make you afraid. I will take the dangerous animals away from the land, and the sword will not pass through your land. BSB BSB: And I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to fear. I will rid the land of dangerous animals, and no sword will pass through your land.
7 UEB You will chase your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword. BSB BSB: You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you.
8 UEB Five of you will chase away a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand; your enemies will fall before you by the sword. BSB BSB: Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.
9 UEB I will look at you with favor and make you fruitful and multiply you; I will establish my covenant with you. BSB BSB: I will turn toward you and make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will establish My covenant with you.
10 UEB You will eat food stored a long time. You will have to bring out the stored food because you will need the room for the new harvest. BSB BSB: You will still be eating the old supply of grain when you need to clear it out to make room for the new.
11 UEB I will place my tabernacle among you, and I will not detest you. BSB BSB: And I will make My dwelling place among you, and My soul will not despise you.
12 UEB I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. BSB BSB: I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people.
13 UEB I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, so that you would not be their slaves. I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you to walk standing up straight. BSB BSB: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians. I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk in uprightness.
Punishments for Disobedience (Leviticus 20:1–9; Deuteronomy 28:15–68)
14 UEB But if you will not listen to me, and will not obey all these commandments, BSB BSB: If, however, you fail to obey Me and to carry out all these commandments,
15 UEB and if you reject my decrees and detest my laws, so that you will not obey all my commandments, but break my covenant— BSB BSB: and if you reject My statutes, despise My ordinances, and neglect to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant,
16 UEB —if you do these things, then I will do this to you: I will inflict terror on you, diseases and fever that will destroy the eyes and will drain away your life. You will plant your seeds for nothing, because your enemies will eat their produce. BSB BSB: then this is what I will do to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting disease, and fever that will destroy your sight and drain your life. You will sow your seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.
17 UEB I will set my face against you, and you will be overpowered by your enemies. Men who hate you will rule over you, and you will run away, even when no one is chasing you. BSB BSB: And I will set My face against you, so that you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one pursues you.
18 UEB If after all this you do not listen to me, then I will punish you seven times as severely for your sins. BSB BSB: And if after all this you will not obey Me, I will proceed to punish you sevenfold for your sins.
19 UEB I will break your pride in your power. I will make the sky over you like iron and your land like bronze. BSB BSB: I will break down your stubborn pride and make your sky like iron and your land like bronze,
20 UEB Your strength will be used up for nothing, because your land will not produce its harvest, and your trees in the land will not produce their fruit. BSB BSB: and your strength will be spent in vain. For your land will not yield its produce, and the trees of the land will not bear their fruit.
22 UEB I will send dangerous animals against you, which will steal your children, destroy your cattle, and make you few in number. So your roads will become deserted. BSB BSB: I will send wild animals against you to rob you of your children, destroy your livestock, and reduce your numbers, until your roads lie desolate.
23 UEB If in spite of these things you still do not accept my correction and you continue to walk in opposition to me, BSB BSB: And if in spite of these things you do not accept My discipline, but continue to walk in hostility toward Me,
24 UEB then I will also walk in opposition to you, and I myself will punish you seven times because of your sins. BSB BSB: then I will act with hostility toward you, and I will strike you sevenfold for your sins.
25 UEB I will bring a sword on you that will execute vengeance for breaking the covenant. You will be gathered together inside your cities, and I will send a disease among you there, and then you will be delivered into the hand of your enemy. BSB BSB: And I will bring a sword against you to execute the vengeance of the covenant. Though you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
26 UEB When I cut off your food supply, ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will distribute your bread by weight. You will eat but not be satisfied. BSB BSB: When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will bake your bread in a single oven and dole out your bread by weight, so that you will eat but not be satisfied.
27 UEB If you do not listen to me despite these things, but continue to walk against me, BSB BSB: But if in spite of all this you do not obey Me, but continue to walk in hostility toward Me,
28 UEB then I will walk against you in anger, and I will punish you even seven more times as much for your sins. BSB BSB: then I will walk in fury against you, and I, even I, will punish you sevenfold for your sins.
29 UEB You will eat the flesh of your sons; you will eat the flesh of your daughters. BSB BSB: You will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.
30 UEB I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and throw your corpses on the corpses of your idols, and I myself will abhor you. BSB BSB: I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and heap your lifeless bodies on the lifeless remains of your idols; and My soul will despise you.
31 UEB I will turn your cities into ruins and destroy your sanctuaries. I will not be pleased with the aroma of your offerings. BSB BSB: I will reduce your cities to rubble and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will refuse to smell the pleasing aroma of your sacrifices.
32 UEB I will devastate the land. Your enemies who will live there will be shocked at the devastation. BSB BSB: And I will lay waste the land, so that your enemies who dwell in it will be appalled.
33 UEB I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw out my sword and follow you. Your land will be abandoned, and your cities will be ruined. BSB BSB: But I will scatter you among the nations and will draw out a sword after you as your land becomes desolate and your cities are laid waste.
34 UEB Then the land will enjoy its Sabbaths for as long as it lies abandoned and you are in your enemies' lands. During that time, the land will rest and enjoy its Sabbaths. BSB BSB: Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths all the days it lies desolate, while you are in the land of your enemies. At that time the land will rest and enjoy its Sabbaths.
35 UEB As long as it lies abandoned, it will have rest, which will be the rest that it did not have with your Sabbaths, when you lived in it. BSB BSB: As long as it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it did not receive during the Sabbaths when you lived in it.
36 UEB As for those of you who are left in your enemies' lands, I will send fear into your hearts so that even the sound of a leaf blowing in the wind will startle you, and you will flee as though you were fleeing from the sword. You will fall, even when no one is chasing you. BSB BSB: As for those of you who survive, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, so that even the sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight. And they will flee as one flees the sword, and fall when no one pursues them.
37 UEB You will stumble over each other as though you were running from the sword, even though no one is chasing you. You will have no power to stand before your enemies. BSB BSB: They will stumble over one another as before the sword, though no one is behind them. So you will not be able to stand against your enemies.
38 UEB You will perish among the nations, and your enemies' land will itself devour you. BSB BSB: You will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will consume you.
39 UEB Those who are left among you will waste away in their sins, there in your enemies' lands, and because of their fathers' sins they will waste away as well. BSB BSB: Those of you who survive in the lands of your enemies will waste away in their iniquity and will decay in the sins of their fathers.
God Remembers Those Who Repent 40 UEB Yet if they confess their sins and their fathers' sin, and their treason by which they were unfaithful to me, and also their walking against me— BSB BSB: But if they will confess their iniquity and that of their fathers in the unfaithfulness that they practiced against Me, by which they have also walked in hostility toward Me—
41 UEB which caused me to turn against them and I brought them into the land of their enemies—if their uncircumcised hearts become humbled, and if they accept the punishment for their sins, BSB BSB: and I acted with hostility toward them and brought them into the land of their enemies—and if their uncircumcised hearts will be humbled and they will make amends for their iniquity,
42 UEB then will I call to mind my covenant with Jacob, my covenant with Isaac, and my covenant with Abraham; also, I will call the land to mind. BSB BSB: then I will remember My covenant with Jacob and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.
43 UEB The land will be abandoned by them, so it will be pleased with its Sabbaths while it lies abandoned without them. They will have to pay the penalty for their sins because they themselves rejected my decrees and detested my laws. BSB BSB: For the land will be abandoned by them, and it will enjoy its Sabbaths by lying desolate without them. And they will pay the penalty for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and abhorred My statutes.
44 UEB Yet despite all this, when they are in their enemies' land, I will not reject them, neither will I detest them so as to completely destroy them and do away with my covenant with them, for I am Yahweh their God. BSB BSB: Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject or despise them so as to destroy them and break My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God.
45 UEB But for their sakes I will call to mind the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, so that I might be their God. I am Yahweh." BSB BSB: But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their fathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD.”
46 UEB These are the commandments, decrees, and laws that Yahweh made between himself and the people of Israel at Mount Sinai through Moses. BSB BSB: These are the statutes, ordinances, and laws that the LORD established between Himself and the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.
